When AK was selected it was Bob Gainey making the picks. Montreal picked 10th and they took AK over a host of talent, sure. But look at the top 9:

1 Pittsburgh: MA Fleury
2 Carolina: Eric Staal
3 Florida: Nathan Horton
4 Columbus: Nikolai Zherdev
5 Buffalo: Thomas Vanek
6 San Jose: Milan Michalek
7 Nashville: Ryan Suter
8 Atlanta: Braydon Coburn
9 Calgary:Dion Phaneuf

While most of those were good picks, some of the good ones would still have done better to pick the guys you listed.

Scouting and drafting should not be assessed on any single pick or year but over the course of a period of time where the entire body of selections can be assessed. Montreal has consistently picked solid NHLers with their drafts in the last five years with Timmins playing an important role in those decisions.

really Timmins? i don’t know not sold on that guy at all. Can’t say habs stock piled prospects since he’s there. just for selecting a.kostitsyn b4 the likes of getzlaf, carter, richards, parise, perry, seabrook, kesler, the list goes on, i mean common, how he got a mulligan for that is unbelievable. Anyway still looks like MB is surrounding himself with good people though. they got 3 years to make it happen.

What I get from that list is that PG and BG were trying to run this team all by themselves. MB can now focus on his main duties and trust that he’s made good hires to oversee important, but not critical to his post, roles. Habs have a lot to look forward to with their young talent. Hope this management team is capable of building on it.
