Hartnell on proposed revenue cut: “It’s very frustrating”

The always quotable Scott Hartnell spoke with CSN Philadelphia’s Tim Panaccio recently about the current state of CBA negotiations between the NHL and NHLPA.

Hartnell, who has attended six negotiating sessions thus far, had plenty to say about the owners’ initial offer, specifically regarding the biggest difference between now and the work stoppage of seven years ago.

“[Gary Bettman] doesn’t want to look at the rich teams or the teams that are losing money. He wants to look at them all together which is a total 180 from what it was seven years ago.

“It’s a little frustrating that way, but that’s their position and you take it as it is. You have to believe they are 100 percent certain of getting everything [from us].

“It’s up to us to see if it’s feasible or not. But you look at the rollback and percentage they want and it’s more concessions then we gave up last time around.”

Hartnell said the NHL’s proposed revenue share cut — the players’ share would go from 57 percent to 46 — is “very frustrating.” He also isn’t a big fan of the rollback (which is inherent in the revenue decrease.)

“We’re not going to take a deal where Ryan Suter and Zach Parise sign $100 million deals only to take a 24 percent cut and get paid 76 million,” he said.

“I don’t know if owners were thinking that’s why they signed these guys to that kind of money, but it’s a little ridiculous to me.”

    Come on Scottie, BITE Bettman!!

    • mclovinhockey - Aug 8, 2012 at 1:15 PM

hartnells fist is bigger than Garys head… just imagine seeing him throw a puch at that melon.

      • mclovinhockey - Aug 8, 2012 at 1:16 PM

        meant face not head…

  2. runtheball - Aug 8, 2012 at 12:41 PM

This is trouble. I don’t see them getting a deal before the season starts.

    • sabatimus - Aug 8, 2012 at 6:28 PM

Bettman’s side of the table is frighteningly harsh and unfair. The league has been steadily gaining in popularity and monetarily for the past how many years, and now there might be a work stoppage because Bettman puts forward THIS garbage? No WAY I accept this if I’m NHLPA.

  3. claysbar - Aug 8, 2012 at 12:48 PM

    In all seriousness,
“We’re not going to take a deal where Ryan Suter and Zach Parise sign $100 million deals only to take a 24 percent cut and get paid 76 million,” he said.

“I don’t know if owners were thinking that’s why they signed these guys to that kind of money, but it’s a little ridiculous to me.”
That comment really makes you wonder.

    • gmsalpha - Aug 8, 2012 at 1:11 PM

It sure does. Hartnell says it’s “ridiculous”, but there are other more appropriate words such as SLEAZY that come to mind quicker.

I always thought it was kind of weird that there were some really massive contracts being handed out recently. But if the owners were pretty certain the deals would be rolled back by this amount, it makes more sense, though it certainly doesn’t make it right by any stretch of the imagination.

Hockey cannot afford another lost season. A shortened season might have worked for the NBA, but I don’t see it working out so well on the ice.

    • mclovinhockey - Aug 8, 2012 at 1:13 PM

it makes sense, webers deal is worth a lot less as well now. I know its still a lot for Suter an Parise but 152 mill is A LOT less than 200 mill.

    • kopy - Aug 8, 2012 at 4:34 PM

Aren’t their contracts set in stone? I thought this was the whole reason why players went after big contracts before the CBA expires. Weber will look like a genius for signing an offer sheet if the players take a big cut.

Of course, there could always be an NBA-style amnesty clause worked into a new CBA.

      • claysbar - Aug 8, 2012 at 5:18 PM

Technically, the Suter, Weber, Parise, Crosby contracts with the big money in the first couple of years don’t take effect until at least next year. I’m honestly not sure, but one would think the rollbacks would include those, unless there is a written clause to exclude them in the new CBA. Anyone with any more insight into this?

      • claysbar - Aug 8, 2012 at 5:25 PM

Wait, my bad, scratch that, I don’t friggin know lol.

      • jernster21 - Aug 9, 2012 at 11:21 AM

It’s my understanding that those contracts are done deals and are paid out according to the current CBA in which they were negotiated under. HOWEVER, when there is a concession/roll back, and there will be (to what extent is TBD) the teams still must operate under the terms of the new CBA with the contracts they already have on the books, so a lot of teams are going to be handcuffed by those types of contracts; those contracts aren’t magically excluded/ignored after the fact. ie: they may add a max length contract of 5 years in the new CBA but these 10+ year contracts negotiated under the current CBA are still 10+ year contracts.

hartnell doesnt want that deal bc he needs the paycheck to pay for his perm.

  8. drewsylvania - Aug 8, 2012 at 7:29 PM

Usual corporate d-bags who can’t avoid paying big bucks for players, then want to hedge their bets by trying to steal it back. The players are the product–we pay to see the players play, not the owners complain.

  9. chubbedjox - Aug 8, 2012 at 7:47 PM

georgia, the only action u get like that is from sandusky

  10. imprintmatt - Aug 8, 2012 at 11:51 PM

Georgia you don’t want that from the butch women in pitt… They are about as ugly as they come around there but I guess that’s about all dumb meatheads with no education can pull so supply and demand principles apply here. Kind of like the lack of any resemblance of a sports town outside of the steelers. It’s ok they are just jealous of their PA big brother. They will always wish and never have. Crosby will be out of the NHL in 3 yrs. he is the next lindros and their crowds will fade. That’s what happens there when the good weather goes away

  11. happybirthdaythickloins - Aug 9, 2012 at 8:04 AM

this imprintmatt character must have been inhaling the same thick brain damaging cloud as andy reids son in trashadelphia. listen here brah, when your team accomplishes great thing like the franchise has then maybe us in the city of champions would take you hacks serious and actually listen to the mumbo jumbo that spews out of your hole. eh probably not, your from trashadelphia the city that never wins. STAY JEALOUS SCA

Happybirthday sick lions. You must know a lot about sports or Philadelphia. If u want to talk championships philly as a city has 8 or nine total right up there with Pitt. We have 2 in hockey 2 in baseball and 2 or 3 in basketball u know the nba a team that your pathetic city can’t afford or have because Pitt is a horrible sports tOwn. You call Pitt Penns or Crosby the franchise and I can’t imagine why. He has been in the league 8 years and has only 1 cup and he didn’t even play in most of that gm 7 because the baby couldn’t play hurt. Max talbot the penn hero that is now a flyer because who the f wants to stay in Pitt had to bail your franchise out. You should be calling max the franchise because he was getting you guys a cup while Cindy was on bench for most of the game. The Penns are paper champs every year. You guys have supposedly the two best players in league that can’t make it out of first round. It’s a joke. The almighty franchise and geno just got tossed by a flyers team that had seven rookies missing their captain pronger and mezaros. The Penns should be embarrassed. Crosby is no franchise by the time Gretzky had 8 yrs under his belt he had 3 or 4 cups stop with all your city of champs and franchise sht because when it comes down to it you sound like morons. Not to mention Boston and Detroit as cities beat you in total championships

    • basedrum777 - Aug 9, 2012 at 10:51 AM

So if Crosby is a loser because he only has one cup in 8 years then what does that make every single player who’s been with Philly for the last 40 years?

  13. chubbedjox - Aug 9, 2012 at 11:13 AM

antsmell is obviously the jealous, rotting soul of garret reid. Must be tough to hav ur body rotting away from aids to get so jealous of The Franchise and The City of Champions. Now that ur dead & burning in Hell, try tuning into root sports pgh and watch soup can slipslap the life outta filly.

  14. antmel30 - Aug 9, 2012 at 5:46 PM

Chubbedjox. YOur comments represent your city idiotic classless and overlooked. Now to basedrum like I said you Pitt fans are smart and very sport knowledgeable. You must be a mathematician. You Pitt fans love to talk about 1975 so much and that would be the second cup in a row for flyers and pretty sure it was under 40 yrs so I guess it would make those flyers better than crosby. Stay smart basedrum

  15. chubbedjox - Aug 9, 2012 at 11:54 PM

1975 antsmell, 1975. Soup Can is focused on destroying filly this year, its gonna be so sad for ur sh!thole city.

  16. antmel30 - Aug 10, 2012 at 7:45 AM

Chinned jox the one with eighty accounts to make Penns look like they have fans so you type in all these names and talk about Crosby man parts. You should be more worried about investing in play girl then garret Reid to satisfy your fetish with a male genitalia. Also to make this clear you talk about Andy Reid son likes its going to affect me or the fans in philly he wasn’t related to us dumb ass. I just shows how pathetic people in Pitt are and the only thing that has girth on Crosby is that beaker on his face that kept poking giriox in the eye on face offs.
