Actually, it was on the Pomona Freeway at Claremont…here is the link. Back in 1972, wow. I guess it was a while ago.

David Shaw was a writer specifically employed to critique the Journalism industry. It was pretty brave of the Times to let him critique his own newspaper…it was a first in those days. The story is from 1991.

It’s because people are immature.

One year, long ago, there was a 69-car pileup on (I believe) the grapevine (I-5) north of Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Times made one of the worst editing decisions ever in the history of journalism: they “upped” the car-damage number to 70, because supposedly they feared the backlash using the number 69 would cause.

Journalism teachers still point to that decision as one of the most unethical decisions in the history of journalism. The L.A. Times has never lived it down.

Not having a #69 in the League because of its “giggleworthiness” is so childish. I always figured that was the reason. I was born that year and was always hoping someone would wear it. Too bad.
