Ouch: Flyers lose Meszaros “indefinitely” to torn Achilles

Defensively speaking, it’s already been a rough summer for the Flyers.

On Monday, it got worse.

A tweet sent out by Philadelphia’s official account reported defenseman Andrej Meszaros suffered a torn Achilles tendon while training in his native Slovakia — this coming just days after Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said Meszaros was completely healed from last season’s back surgery.

“Andrej had successful surgery this morning to repair a torn right Achilles tendon,” Holmgren said in a statement. “The surgery was performed by Dr. Steve Raikin at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia.

“Andrej was injured last week during summer training in Slovakia. Andrej will be out indefinitely.”

More, from CSN Philadelphia:

The typical recovery period for a torn Achilles can be six to eight months or more, which means Meszaros is possibly in danger of missing the entire 2012-13 season.

The loss is a huge one for the Flyers’ defense, especially given the assumed absence of Chris Pronger, the departure of free agent Matt Carle for Tampa Bay last month and the failed attempts to acquire defensemen Ryan Suter and Shea Weber. Meszaros, when healthy, is one of the team’s top D-men.

No matter how you look at it, the Flyers’ D is weaker now than it was a year ago.

The injury leaves Philly to start the season with a projected top-six of Kimmo Timonen, Braydon Coburn, Luke Schenn, Nicklas Grossmann, Bruno Gervais, and Andreas Lilja (one would expect Erik Gustafsson to be in the mix as well.)

So…P.K. Subban offer sheet, anyone?

  1. chazxcore - Aug 7, 2012 at 10:44 AM

try to get suban to sign an offer sheet like yesterday.

  2. sportsfreak13 - Aug 7, 2012 at 10:45 AM

wow that sucks. Coming from a pens fan here, i wish him a speedy recovery. I hate the flyers but never wish injuries on their players. Id rather watch two teams battle it out with a full roster. Sorry to hear about this.

  3. nhmac - Aug 7, 2012 at 10:45 AM

Without Mez this is a very, very thin defensive corps in front of a very, very shaky goaltender.

    • flyersgoalscoredby88 - Aug 7, 2012 at 1:00 PM

Leighton should only be playing about 25 games…

    • mathieug79 - Aug 7, 2012 at 1:55 PM

I tend to think Bryz will pull it together this year, and philly can give a shot to some of their young D’s.

  4. broadstbully33 - Aug 7, 2012 at 11:01 AM

homer please do NOT make a panic move and trade coots for an overrated dman like jay bo. as for pk why would Montreal not match an offer sheet especially when its likely to be a 2nd round pick as compensation

    • danphipps01 - Aug 7, 2012 at 2:00 PM

He’s not moving Coots for anything in these circumstances. Seriously, Couturier’s just about the best (healthy) defensive presence left on the team at this point.

  5. phillyphever - Aug 7, 2012 at 11:02 AM

    1) No thanks on Subban. Don’t think he’s worth losing picks over an offer sheet (and Montreal would match anyway).

    2) This could be a blessing in disguise. Maybe this will get Lavy to play the kids more (face it, the Flyers need to find out if Gus, Bourdon and Manning can play full time).

    3) This officially takes them out of the Ryan sweepstakes.

    • biasedhomer - Aug 7, 2012 at 11:58 AM

I dont think the Ducks wanted Mez in the 1st place

  6. broadstbully33 - Aug 7, 2012 at 11:33 AM

anahiem doesnt need d they signed allen and souray so why would this hurt our chances on ryan?

    • elemeno89 - Aug 7, 2012 at 12:16 PM

philly needs d men. with pronger out, and now mezaros, that two top d men that philly will have a hard tiem replacing. given the offer sheet made to weber, thats the need they need to fill. its not a matter of what anaheim wants for ryan, its what philly needs. and now, more then ever, they need a defenseman. not another player that can score.

      • copman40 - Aug 7, 2012 at 2:17 PM

The Sabres have plenty of D men available for a good young center

  7. jimw81 - Aug 7, 2012 at 11:38 AM

Add doan. As a flyers fan, I have low expectations for this team now base one three things 1) can core group repeat last years offensive output, 2) defense crop that is now average and 3) what we are going to get out bryz. he’s probably more interested in curiosity from nasa than stopping pucks.

Look at brightside flyers have $18 million under the cap plus whatever is rollback in new CBA.

  8. sportsfreak13 - Aug 7, 2012 at 11:38 AM

your a pathetic excuse for a human being.

    • elemeno89 - Aug 7, 2012 at 12:17 PM

      wonder what that comment said…

      • napoleonblownapart6887 - Aug 7, 2012 at 12:56 PM

        me too.

      • lostpuppysyndrome - Aug 7, 2012 at 1:09 PM

lol we complain about the comments people leave and then have a burning curiosity when we miss an inflammatory comment. We are such strange beings.

      • chrisvegas - Aug 7, 2012 at 2:29 PM

I hate when they delete comments. Let people say what they want regardless of how idiotic it may be.

      • lostpuppysyndrome - Aug 7, 2012 at 3:02 PM

The only comments that get deleted are the racist and/or sexually explicit ones left by Crosby’s fanboiz. I have no problems with that.

      • handsofsweed - Aug 7, 2012 at 3:57 PM

That’s “fanboy.” As in singular. Don’t ever think of him in terms of plurality. There is only one person that fits the bill you’re describing.

      • lostpuppysyndrome - Aug 7, 2012 at 4:03 PM

        Of course, my apologies.

      • theawesomersfranchise - Aug 7, 2012 at 4:07 PM

Fairly certain that he hates Crosby and is constantly doing an impression of what he thinks Crosby fans are like.

  9. miketoasty - Aug 7, 2012 at 11:50 AM

This is seriously one of the most disturbing things I have ever read on this site. How you can post stuff like this and not feel remorse is beyond me.

  10. natlbnkilr - Aug 7, 2012 at 12:23 PM

Should have offered Weber $1 Billion contract… Preds might not have been able to match that one and this wouldn’t hurt the team so much. Mez is a good guy and I hate it for him… but maybe the Flyers are getting a little Karma check for trying to bankrupt a smaller market team.

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Aug 7, 2012 at 5:07 PM

Don’t worry dude, Nashville will be getting a Karma check in a couple of years when they relocate to Quebec City or Seattle. If they go bankrupt (likely) they have no one to blame but their own ego.

  11. slammed81 - Aug 7, 2012 at 12:31 PM

I understand the concern but I let bourdon n gusty play see what u got and if u gotta make a trade during the season u have cap..not the end of the world but hurts and u also have lilja

    • phillyphever - Aug 7, 2012 at 3:50 PM

I rather play Gus, Bourdon and Manning at the same time than have Lilja lace the skates.

  12. jaybyrd99 - Aug 7, 2012 at 12:33 PM

Ouch that stings and even as a rangers fan i feel bad for anyone/ team to go through a serious injury like this . I agree with another poster who likes teams, especially rivals, playing each other at full strength . I wish him a full and speedy recovery.

  13. mclovinhockey - Aug 7, 2012 at 12:43 PM

I guess someone was posting inhuman comments…

Anyway, thanks sportsfreak, very classy comment, I feel the same way. I hated even seeing crosby get hurt, this is a sport, it’s all in fun, this isn’t war. Injuries are not funny.

If we trade for jaybo at most we give up read. I think we could get him for a 2nd rounder. The flames want him gone and his price tag (money he makes and cap hit) is well higher than he should get.

As for PK. Montreal SHOULD match any offer, however, if Philly offers 5-6 years at about 4.5 the habs would be stuck. They could match but they only want PK for 2-3 years tops at 2.5 a year tops…. So if we make them double the offer there is a shot at this guy.

  14. chazxcore - Aug 7, 2012 at 12:54 PM

    Yes, what was said?

  15. chrisvegas - Aug 7, 2012 at 1:07 PM

Wow. Flyers the last couple of seasons have had really bad luck with injuries. This one hurts.

  16. filthadelphiadivers - Aug 7, 2012 at 1:25 PM

Hate the flyers, but never wish these types of injuries on anyone. Hard to come back to 100% after something like this….hope everything works out.

  17. cameltoews - Aug 7, 2012 at 2:12 PM

Injuries sometimes allow a young player to come up show what he’s got and sometimes excel. As seen when the rangers Sauer got hurt ryan McDonough was called up and became one of the leagues top young defenseman. I dont know much about phillys young D but maybe they have a diamond in the rough waiting for his chance.

    • jkay1818 - Aug 7, 2012 at 6:04 PM

McDonagh was already in the lineup way before sauer was injured. Sauer’s injury forced them to sign stRalman and call up guys like bickell. McDonagh was on the team in 10-11 when sauer played the whole yr. I get what you’re saying though but, to have a kid come up, strike gold like that and emerge as one of the best d-men in hockey is a tall order.

  18. buffalos12thman - Aug 7, 2012 at 2:35 PM

Just curious but what do Philly Fans think about a trade with the Sabres? Buffalo has about 8 or 9 NHL defensemen that could be traded while Philly is pretty strong at center, a position where Buffalo could use some help.

    • phillyphever - Aug 7, 2012 at 3:52 PM

There was something about sending Briere back there, but if you’re talking about Schenn or Couturier: forget it. Not even for Myers.

  19. joewilliesshnoz - Aug 7, 2012 at 4:52 PM

Subann would fit right in with Lavs’ cheap shot style of hockey.

  20. cameltoews - Aug 7, 2012 at 5:06 PM

I know he isn’t the best but Eminger is a more than capable 6th defenseman. I am a rangers fan an all though he isn’t the greatest he has a very physical game that works well for the east and he plays hard every game. I know he is skating in Philly right now so there is a cheap option.

  21. bcjim - Aug 7, 2012 at 6:47 PM

Tough luck. Feel bad for him.

    Lmao at Philly though.

  22. mclovinhockey - Aug 7, 2012 at 7:55 PM

    @joewilliesshnoz

“Subban won’t fit into lavys cheap shot style of hockey”
Clearly you know nothing at all about this sport.
1st Subban is actually a pretty dirty player, he loves to slew foot players, if he was on the flyers, besides Rinaldo, he would clearly be the dirtiest player on the team.
    Which brings us to
    2. Lavys system is far from cheap, the flyers are far from being a dirty team (besides Rinaldo of course) you might be thinking of the old style they used to play, now they are just tough and fast.

  23. wakegoalie27 - Aug 8, 2012 at 4:28 AM

I think manning, Gus and bourdon are very capable options. Our cup chances died when we didn’t get a premier dman but if they let the young guns come up for their shot I have a strong feeling bourdon and manning turn some heads while Gus becomes our next defensive failure. Not a big fan of Gus but I sure hope he proves me wrong

  24. joewilliesshnoz - Aug 8, 2012 at 7:22 AM

Hey Mclovin, clearly you can’t read.
