Fourth overall pick Griffin Reinhart signs with Islanders

The New York Islanders have announced the signing of top-tier prospect Griffin Reinhart to a three-year, entry-level deal.

Reinhart had 36 points and 38 penalty minutes in 58 games with the WHL Edmonton Oil Kings before the Islanders took him with the fourth overall pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

If the name Reinhart sounds familiar, it might be because his father, Paul Reinhart, played for the Atlanta/Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks. The elder Reinhart had 559 points in 648 career NHL games and was a two-time All-Star. Griffin’s older brother, Max Reinhart, is also pursuing his dream of becoming an NHLer. He was drafted by the Calgary Flames in 2010.

Griffin is a two-way defenseman with an imposing frame and offensive upside. The Islanders have already built a core of promising young forwards and the addition of Reinhart could make them a more complete team.
