I think the “his wife is a local” thing is the rationale du jour when it comes to predicting where free agents end up, even if Tom Gagliardi owns a team along with Doan he can’t do much about the fact that Dallas is not particularly close to Phoenix or anywhere else the Doans have roots.

Of course, as I intimated earlier I suspect that Doan is looking for a contract that justifies leaving Phoenix and no team with regional connections to his family is likely to offer the kind of money we’ve heard is being promised.

If Doan is said to be drawn to Vancouver because he co-owns the Kamloops Blazers, why is no one talking up Dallas as a potential destination? The new owner in Dallas is one of Doan’s co-owners in Kamloops. Dallas isn’t that far from Phoenix, and the Stars have done a good job adding vets this summer. The Stars have been pretty competitive the last two seasons.

There’s no way the Canucks can match the kind of crazy money (reportedly) being offered up by other teams. I mean they can match the money, but they can’t manipulate the cap hit enough to make it work with their structure, even if they dealt Luongo for scraps.

So if he truly is drawn to the city and the team, Shane will have to decide whether he is truly ready to move on from the Coyotes organization, even if it does not mean the kind of payday a player his age just can’t say “no” to.

Don’t get me wrong – he’d be the perfect acquisition for this team.. coming out of the offseason with an upgrade on defense (Garrison), an upgrade in the top six (Doan) and a nice jolt to the organization’s depth (whatever’s coming back in the Luongo trade) would be ideal for the Canucks.

Maybe not the money but don’t rule out the family influence. We’ve seen it work out that way twice this summer already.
