I hope this goes without saying, but please do not allow what a few (maybe one with personalities) knuckleheads say as indicative of the views of Pens fans everywhere. I’m a huge Penguins fan, but I have a healthy respect for all of the other fans of the game, even if I don’t agree with them at all times.

No. He argued that across the organization, there is depth on the blue line. In other words, they have a lot of defensemen. He goes on argue (via the statement “but not at forward) that they do NOT have depth across the organization at forward – both of these statements are true.

As for your note about the organizational versus NHL level depth, well the very nature of “organizational” depth is that it takes a look at the entire system. Most teams when they see a dearth of talent in one particular area will invest picks in those areas, as the Pens have done under Shero’s administration. So while the past performance would say that defense is a need, the reality is that there are probably 3-4 prospects in the Pens system with top 4 potential.

@flyersgoal – How is implying that the organizational depth at forward needs to improve “ignoring 60% of the skating positions”? And, really, its just depth at wing (you might have heard that the Pens have some decent centers).

As far as the organizational depth at defense – yes, I’m saying that the Pens weakness on the big club is their strength in the minors. That’s kinda a smart way to improve a team.

Despres (2010 1st rd.) will be up full-time this year and has been mentioned by Bylsma as a potential partner for Letang; Morrow (2011 1st rd) is considered a future first-pairing stud; Harrington (2011 2nd rd) made the Canadian WJ team last year; Pens got Maatta and Pouliot in 1st rd. this year. And on top of that – Strait and Bortuzzo (NHL ready bottom-pairing guys), Dumoulin (received in the Staal/Sutter trade, was considered Carolina’s third best defensive prospect), Sneep, Samuelsson, Grant…

Some of these kids can even be busts – and the Pens will still likely have one of the best, cheapest defenses in the league in 2-4 years.

I went to the prospect scrimmage, and this kid was probably the most noticeable forward on the ice. While I doubt he’ll see time with the big boys this year, I think it’s a great signing. The Pens have fantastic organizational depth at defense but not at forward. As a side note, the Baby Pens should be a force in the AHL this year.
