Flyers sign Laviolette to multi-year extension

Aug 1, 2012, 10:42 AM EDT

Peter Laviolette AP

What was rumored to be in the making is now official — the Philadelphia Flyers have re-upped with head coach Peter Laviolette on a multi-year extension.

CSN Philly’s Tim Panaccio reports it’s a two-year extension. Given Laviolette had one year remaining on his current deal, this new contract will see him through the 2014-15 season.

“We are thrilled to have Peter continue his work with our group as we push to compete for the Stanley Cup,” Flyers GM Paul Holmgren told the team website.  “Peter has done a terrific job for us and is very deserving of this extension.”

The extension is not surprising given what Laviolette’s accomplished since taking Philly’s head coaching gig in Dec. 2009.

He’s been to a Stanley Cup finals, posted a 122-73-26 record and guided the Flyers to the third-most wins in the Eastern Conference since being hired — only Pittsburgh and Washington have more, with 127 each.

His playoff success has been equally impressive.

From Flyers.com:

Under his watch, the Flyers have been the only team in the league to reach the second round of the playoffs (or further) in each of the last three seasons.

The Flyers have participated in eight playoff series in that time, more than any other team.

With the extension, Laviolette will now set aim at moving up the Flyers’ all-time coaching wins list. Next in striking distance is Ken Hitchcock (131 wins), followed by Pat Quinn (141) and Mike Keenan (190).

Fred Shero is the winningest coach in franchise history, with 308.

Well deserved, a coach who can win… Prob one of the better coaches in the league… Def top 10, and the ones above him don’t seem to be going anywhere soon, so yeah, smart move

    • leeeroooyjeeenkiiins - Aug 1, 2012 at 12:01 PM

People are thumbing this up because they think it’s sarcasm, right? I mean people can’t actually believe he’s a good coach, can they?

      • biasedhomer - Aug 1, 2012 at 12:24 PM

Because he is one of the better coaches in the league. You may not believe it (it is an opinion after all), the majority of fans will agree that Laviolette is a great coach.

      • chrisvegas - Aug 1, 2012 at 12:46 PM

And they are thumbing you down because they think your smart.

      • theawesomersfranchise - Aug 1, 2012 at 6:35 PM

He’s only had 1 losing season in his coaching career back in 03/04 with the Canes. He’s been to 2 finals and has a ring. He has 100 more wins than loses.

So ya, he’s a pretty good coach

  2. happybirthdaytogeno - Aug 1, 2012 at 11:23 AM

another horrid signing by an awful organization in a filthy ghetto and completely irrelevant city. philthy wants to be in new jersey so bad its trying to be camden 2.0 and even failing at that.

    • dougr42 - Aug 1, 2012 at 11:46 AM

can ya’ll ban this kid’s IP or something? this is starting to get ridiculous.

      • chrisvegas - Aug 1, 2012 at 12:48 PM

        I couldn’t agree more.

    • funnyman549 - Aug 1, 2012 at 12:06 PM

must you constantly show people what a complete immature idiot you are. Get the psychiatric help that you need!

  3. filthadelphiadivers - Aug 1, 2012 at 11:56 AM

I’m pretty sure nobody wants to be in new jersey….that includes the majority of the population that lives there. Lavvy is a solid coach, whole new respect for him as a coach after HBO series, good extension.

    • jimeejohnson - Aug 2, 2012 at 12:39 PM

      I’m pretty sure you’re lying.

  4. chazxcore - Aug 1, 2012 at 11:58 AM

Great job by the Flyers. Lavs is a good coach. He proved his worth last year with what he did with the rookies.

  5. chrisvegas - Aug 1, 2012 at 12:45 PM

    You sound like an idiot.

  6. bobhpine - Aug 1, 2012 at 1:48 PM

Dry island! Hooray for playoff disappointments! And jam! And losing! And 100 point seasons which are more important to philthy morons than cups! Hooray!

    • sheckyrimshot - Aug 1, 2012 at 2:17 PM

i agree, the flyers need to follow the penguins road to success: suck for half a decade, nearly run the franchise into the ground, then draft a sentient menstrual cramp with a crustache and the russian palsy love child of bull from night court and rudy from the monster squad. i better give mr snyder a call.

  7. grlscout - Aug 1, 2012 at 2:01 PM

Last season?? That’s your idea of evidence supporting Laviolette’s extension? The Flyers were a joke, last season. Third in their division and 0-6 against their division leaders (NYR). I get that standards are lower in Philadelphia, but have some pride, people! If being known as the leagues DIRTIEST team is your idea of success, Laviolette is the best choice possible! Hell, sign him for 10yrs at that rate!

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Aug 1, 2012 at 4:43 PM

Yes, the Flyers were a Joke by owning the Hens all season long and lets not forget what happened in the Playoffs. Not to mention that Bylsma was severely out coached and out matched by Lavy.

      • grlscout - Aug 1, 2012 at 6:08 PM

Well I was laughing all 6 times the Rangers beat them. I imagine you were not laughing so I understand your resentment at my statement.
I should explain that by “joke” I just mean that fans of respectable teams chuckle at their performance. Thats all.

      • melonheadsdaddy - Aug 1, 2012 at 8:45 PM

How’d the rangers fare against new jersey?

      • sizzle299 - Aug 1, 2012 at 9:14 PM

I chuckle thinking of how the 82nd game ended your season a couple back. Bouche over Lundy- good for a giggle

    • grlscout - Aug 1, 2012 at 10:36 PM

@ melonheadsdaddy -Not sure why you went there because they fared better than Philly did.

@sizzle299- Ill still take Eastern Conference Champs. Also, 109 points beats 103 points every time..

      cute try, though.

  8. filthadelphiadivers - Aug 1, 2012 at 2:34 PM

The draft is meant to help teams rebuild…..idiot. So why is it an issue the Penguins used the draft to rebuild their team? And try to have an intelligent argument, not the Philly standard “the NHL rigged the draft do the Penguins could draft Crosby”. Every team that is in a rebuilding phase in every professional sport uses the draft to do just that. Your dumb…..byeeeeeeeeeee

    • sheckyrimshot - Aug 1, 2012 at 3:08 PM

i never said they rigged the draft. i said they sucked, went bankrupt, then drafted labia majora and labia minora. also try googling “your vs you’re” before you call someone an idiot. nitwit.

    • Eberwizzle - Aug 1, 2012 at 6:01 PM

      ” Your dumb…..byeeeeeeeeeee”

      It’s actually “you’re dumb”

  9. filthadelphiadivers - Aug 1, 2012 at 2:38 PM

    @grlscout

I’m not even sure it’s so much Lavvy who pushes the dirty play. I went to a game out in Philly not to long ago, and all the stuff that comes up on the scoreboard between plays and on tv time outs is all about fighting. Their fan base would rather boo and harass other teams than cheer or their own team. Even the pre game video they showed was all fighting, nothing about scoring and winning. I think dirty play is just bred into their team.

    • grlscout - Aug 1, 2012 at 2:44 PM

      @filthadelphiadivers -

that makes some serious sense, actually! pathetic.

    • flyersgoalscoredby88 - Aug 2, 2012 at 9:08 AM

What do they show in Consol before games to fire up the fanbase? A bunch of ping pong balls and a draft board?

  10. filthadelphiadivers - Aug 1, 2012 at 3:10 PM

Lol grammar argument? Really? And you still did not address my response of why it’s an issue that teams, pens included in that, use the draft to rebuild when that’s what it’s there for.

Your grammar argument proves the other point I made, that your dumb. Byeeeeee

  11. filthadelphiadivers - Aug 1, 2012 at 3:11 PM

I also never said that you said they rigged the draft, I simply said have an intelligent argument instead of the typical Philly argument that everyone uses which is that the draft was rigged.

Obviously you are incapable of an intelligent response though.

    • sheckyrimshot - Aug 1, 2012 at 3:18 PM

go huff your mom’s dong cheese, cockroach! #intelligentargument

  12. redscarfunion - Aug 1, 2012 at 3:14 PM

Last time I checked this was a thread about lavy! How do the penguins come in this at all? other then they were shown the door in the first round this, year by this man!

  13. broadstreetbeatdown - Aug 1, 2012 at 4:34 PM

Yup, nothing like the Kansas City Hens fans coming in and mucking up a thread relating to one of the best coaches in the game today. Congrats to Lavy. He deserves it!!

  14. filthadelphiadivers - Aug 1, 2012 at 5:25 PM

Actually the first comment made about the penguins was by a flyers fan if you scroll up in the thread.

I’m obviously a penguins fan, and I posted a comment saying about how I had respect for Lavvy and thought this was a good signing.

And once again the only argument you have is the bankruptcy argument. Meanwhile, the team was never going to get moved. Lemieux simply used that as leverage to get a new arena in Pittsburgh since Mellon Arena was in embarassing shape. Oh, and you beat us in the regular season and first round, congratulations that doesn’t earn you any recognition what do ever.

You all are doing enough talking about the penguins in this thread, none of the pens fans even need to really comment.

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Aug 1, 2012 at 7:07 PM

Well if you scroll up you’ll see that the guy with multiple personalities actually started in but that is neither here nor there. Look, I appreciate the rivalry. Shoot, some of my best friends are Hens fans, although most are long time fans not the Crosby mania era. See the only problem is that it was 100% true that they were a heartbeat away from going to KC. Any denial about that is revisionist history.

      • sheckyrimshot - Aug 1, 2012 at 7:11 PM

hens seems a bit weak. will clittsburgh poongoons bypass the language filter?

  15. phillyphan83 - Aug 1, 2012 at 5:52 PM

oh the envy of pens fans makes me all warm and fuzzy inside :-)

  16. filthadelphiadivers - Aug 1, 2012 at 6:07 PM

Lol how am I showing envy by saying Lavvy is a good coach? Bylsma already has a Jack Adams.

And good call, I’m dumb lol.

Those two responses are as bad as the soup can army comments lol.

  17. filthadelphiadivers - Aug 1, 2012 at 6:08 PM

When you have no argument…straight to the typing errors….that’s funny

    • melonheadsdaddy - Aug 1, 2012 at 8:51 PM

“your” name is a direct result of the “soup can army” clowns. Philly is a beautiful city…come on over and see it some time…only 2 arguments matter. You were a wet fart away from being a KC fan and you lost in the first round. I can be cool too..”thanks byeeeeeeeeeee”

  18. rgotoguy - Aug 1, 2012 at 11:01 PM

The Flyers and Pens fans arguing on every god damn thread is really getting old.

  19. bledalotofgreen - Aug 1, 2012 at 11:16 PM

People’s obsession with Philly whether on here or pro football talk is comical we really are the sports capital of the country and pens fans are jealous of that I guess redheaded step child syndrome or second rate city syndrome one or the other

    • bobhpine - Aug 2, 2012 at 6:49 AM

      eagles 0 super bowls…Steelers 6

      Flyers 1975…enough said

      Jealous of what exactly?

      • flyersgoalscoredby88 - Aug 2, 2012 at 9:10 AM

“Envious” is the word you two are looking for. Actually, for Pittsburgh it could be jealous, I guess.

/joke due to the ridiculous grammar comments above.

      • handsofsweed - Aug 3, 2012 at 3:35 PM

To be fair, the Eagles are 3-time world champions. They may not be SB’s, but you cannot disrespect a World Championship. A World Title is a World Title. Period.

To be fair again, you forgot to mention that the Pirates have won 5 world titles to the Phillies’ 2. And honestly, the Pirates future looks much brighter than the Phillies future does. It feels odd to type that, but it’s mostly true.

  20. bobhpine - Aug 2, 2012 at 9:33 AM

They show Stanley cup highlights at consol…in HD…what did they have in 1975?…i forgot that you losers don’t care about winning…just those early exits and 100 point seasons…yay!

  21. bobhpine - Aug 2, 2012 at 9:37 AM

But I guess if the pens are good because of a ping pong ball then by imputation that is an admission that Crosby makes Them good…I knew you philthy ladies had a crush on him deep down

  22. jimeejohnson - Aug 2, 2012 at 12:42 PM

Time for a cheesesteak with fries on top. Haters gonna cringe.

    • handsofsweed - Aug 3, 2012 at 3:40 PM

Ok. Now there’s no way anyone’s arguing with you. Not even Soup can can talk smack on that terrible, awful, pure evil deliciousness.

  23. sausage9724 - Aug 2, 2012 at 6:54 PM

The argument being made about the drafting is that the flyers never intentionally lost to get better players through the draft, unlike the penguins…and in spite of all of your arguing the flyers are the best expansion in the nhl

    • handsofsweed - Aug 3, 2012 at 3:26 PM

In the regular season, right? I mean, that’s what you were talking about, right? Nobody will argue that with you. Much respect.

Now let’s talk about expansion teams in the Post-season. You are aware that the expansion Edmonton Oilers are 5-time world champions, right? And that the expansion NY Islanders are 4-time world champions, yes? And that the expansion Pittsburgh Penguins are 3-time world champions, no? And that the expansion NJ Devils are also 3-time world champions? Even the expansion Colorado Avalanche have equaled your two world titles.

Philly will have to win another title just to climb to #3 (and if/when they do, they will be ahead of the Pens and Devs..I won’t argue that).
