Flyers expect to sign Peter Laviolette to an extension

Jul 26, 2012, 10:30 PM EDT

Peter Laviolette AP

While NHL teams are shifting more and more toward defense-first approaches, Peter Laviolette continues to promote his attacking system.

His contract was scheduled to expire at the end of next season, but CSNPhilly.com’s Sarah Baicker reports that the Philadelphia Flyers expect to extend his contract “within a week.”

Laviolette coached the Flyers to an appearance in the 2010 Stanley Cup finals after taking over for John Stevens and also won an Atlantic Division title during his three abbreviated seasons in Philly. His overall record as the Flyers coach is 122-73-26 in that span.

  1. emoser - Jul 26, 2012 at 10:39 PM

Good to see they’re using some of that Weber money on their own players/coaches and not overspending on the leftover FAs.

  2. icdogg - Jul 26, 2012 at 10:43 PM

    Sure, he deserves it…

  3. jnealsmeatymember - Jul 26, 2012 at 10:49 PM

Yeah like this gremlin lookin crybaby broad deserves an extension, hes the weakest coach in the nhl and PA. He probably needs a surgical extension in his pants, from the talk around PHT, he’s hung like a lightswitch. Must be miserable packing that AND living in ghetto Filly. He’ll be fired by the new year for lack of motivation and masculinity.

    • soupcanxtrabeefy - Jul 26, 2012 at 11:55 PM

I heard its more like a can of tuna not a lightswitch. STAY GIRTHY … SCN

  4. claysbar - Jul 26, 2012 at 10:49 PM

Given his record, in the playoffs, it should be a short term contract. Not saying he isn’t good, but he has had really good teams and has not gotten past the semi’s.

    • chazxcore - Jul 26, 2012 at 11:20 PM

Yeah, the whole winning a Stanley cup and taking another team to the finals is an AWFUL playoff record and not beyond the semi-finals because that comes AFTER the Stanley Cup. Yeah…explain your stance to me.

      • claysbar - Jul 26, 2012 at 11:23 PM

My bad, forgot he won it with the Canes, was thinking Maurice was there for it.

      • claysbar - Jul 26, 2012 at 11:26 PM

And the finals with Philly, my bad again. Proceed with the admonishments.

    • flyersgoalscoredby88 - Jul 26, 2012 at 11:32 PM

His career playoff record…winning a cup, making the cup finals, making the conference finals, winning a round in the past two seasons…just terrible.

      • claysbar - Jul 26, 2012 at 11:36 PM

        See above

  5. slammed81 - Jul 26, 2012 at 10:55 PM

hey look another pitt fan talkin like the penguins played in the flyers series….clueless….everyday a pitt fan comes in here n say filthadelphia reallly get some more insults its gettin old quick…

  6. cosmoandmelovepens - Jul 26, 2012 at 11:04 PM

Earl peacock has like 10 usernames. He is the same person. Most penguins fans just mind there own business, until we can prove we are better than how we played last year in the playoffs.

  7. flyeredup - Jul 26, 2012 at 11:05 PM

    He’s a great coach.

  8. chazxcore - Jul 26, 2012 at 11:21 PM

Very good coach! Happy he is in Philadelphia.

    • handsofsweed - Jul 27, 2012 at 11:22 AM

A big “Yes” to the first part, a big “no” to the second! Um, sign in Edmonton, Lavy? Lol.

  9. pkswally024 - Jul 26, 2012 at 11:22 PM

If you just ignore the trolls they will go away

    • chazxcore - Jul 27, 2012 at 12:06 AM

Wish that was true, but when you get a person with split personalities, and they all think they are “funny”, the inane behavior continues…it really is a viscous cycle and something that we should have pity on.

      • flyersgoalscoredby88 - Jul 27, 2012 at 9:08 AM

He actually responds to his own posts, making ignoring him impossible.

  10. biasedhomer - Jul 26, 2012 at 11:34 PM

Hes a good coach, but we know the trend in hockey.

A hard nosed coach for 3 years, team loses interest, fire him, replace him with a player guy coach for 3 years, repeat cycle.

If they dont win the Cup in the next 2 years, I say he is as good as gone, unless in those 2 years they go very deep.

  11. jnealsmeatymember - Jul 26, 2012 at 11:42 PM

The only thing getting old around here is the fact that filly hasnt hoisted the Cup since 1975. How extremely embarASSing for that pathetic, weak, so-called fanbase, which is a joke just like that city itself.

    • jimw81 - Jul 26, 2012 at 11:54 PM

Can pens fans come up with better argument than 1975? flyers fans don’t care. if it wasn’t for us ‘sharing revenues” mario would been writing letter from Kansas city.

    • flyersphan28 - Jul 27, 2012 at 12:18 AM

dude arent isnt pittsburg the same city that almost went bankrupt to the point they couldnt pay there best player so they actually gave him the team? yea exatcly, ur a dair weather fan. where were u when pitt was about to get moved until the nhl fixed two straight drafts so they could get the number 1 nd number 2 pick? pathetic

      • flyersgoalscoredby88 - Jul 27, 2012 at 9:11 AM

That post makes me wonder if your screen name is intentional, or if you can’t spell “fan.”

  12. jimw81 - Jul 26, 2012 at 11:50 PM

Looks likes the players don’t have a excuse if things go wrong this season. I think Homer is putting too much pressure on this core.

  13. jnealsmeatymember - Jul 27, 2012 at 12:01 AM

1975 is the only argument we need. 1975 ya losers hahahaaaa

    • flyersgoalscoredby88 - Jul 27, 2012 at 9:12 AM

That is the year where the IRS locked your doors because the Penguins couldn’t even afford to pay the interest on back taxes due to a lack of fan support, right?

    • andyb02 - Jul 27, 2012 at 5:51 PM

Fair weather Pittsburgh fan. Ignore him.

  14. jnealsmeatymember - Jul 27, 2012 at 12:28 AM

Cant believe im a “dair” weather fan… Dut dey, d’m dlad dhat I dont dlive din dhilly.

    • handsofsweed - Jul 27, 2012 at 11:25 AM

Every now and then, you’re actually funny. Too bad you don’t know when to stop.

  15. wenzel0232 - Jul 27, 2012 at 12:37 AM

Please. Don’t mention Maurice and Hurricanes again. Makes me want to hang myself. Miss Lavvy in Carolina! Let’s go Canes!

    • phillyphever - Jul 27, 2012 at 12:46 AM

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Maurice take Carolina to the finals back in 02?

  16. anthonycarch22 - Jul 27, 2012 at 2:34 AM

Why do u idiot Penguins fans think your franchise is better than the Flyers??? You only have 1 more cup. We have 4 more conference championships and 10 more division titles than u idiots. Lol

    • claysbar - Jul 27, 2012 at 11:35 PM

Well, the Flyers do have more conference championships than the Pens. And without doubt more division titles. Because that is what all NHL players strive to achieve…

  17. bcjim - Jul 27, 2012 at 5:00 AM

Lol, Philly loves ling term ball and chain deals. They probably offer their janitors 10y contracts.

  18. antmel30 - Jul 27, 2012 at 6:24 AM

I LOve these jealous Pitt fans that come on and get pissed about the money flyers can throw at people because we supported our team in good and bad times. It’s not our fault your team went bankrupt and can’t get any good free agents to go there because who wants to go to Pitt. I bet you guys couldn’t name a free agent that was a top 20 player to sign in Pitt in last ten years. Even your stars want out ( Stall). It’s a joke how do you not lock up stall. Your gm should be fired. The kId with twenty accounts get new material I can pretty much post for you. You are a broken record. You say same thing and then have convo with yourself. Get a girl bud and quit wacking to your Crosby fat head .

    • theageofquarrel - Jul 27, 2012 at 7:45 AM

Blah blah blah. Do you even you know why they almost went bankrupt? Probably not. So you will just keep running your mouth.

      • flyersgoalscoredby88 - Jul 27, 2012 at 9:14 AM

A lack of fan support would be the underlying cause.

    • claysbar - Jul 27, 2012 at 11:40 PM

Well you’re right, the Pens don’t get the big free agents. Going even back to before the current CBA, the Flyers have outspent the Pens. The Flyers have attracted numerous big name free agents. How’s that worked out for ya?

  19. philly4lyfe - Jul 27, 2012 at 8:39 AM

So we’re 8-3-1 vs the pens in the last two years during the regular season. We’re 141-89-30 vs the pens all time. We also beat them in the playoffs this year while they were picked to win it all and our defense/goaltending was awful and half our squad was rookies. See, when some1 says something on the Internet you don’t agree with, this is how you respond – by giving evidence to support your argument, NOT by going “OMG soup cans 1975!!!! LOLOL!!!” I realize there are many subtle differences here to your approach that it will take you a very, very long time to understand, so I won’t hold my breath.

  20. homelanddefense - Jul 27, 2012 at 8:55 AM

    Good for him.

When I was growing up he was a defenseman (and captain) for the AHL Providence Bruins. He was one of my favorite players, and he ended up as the coach. I was pissed that the Bruins organization let him go.

It ended up working out for both parties but I still wish him luck.

    • flyersgoalscoredby88 - Jul 27, 2012 at 9:15 AM

He was also the captain of the team the last time the Olympics had all amateur hockey players.

      • homelanddefense - Jul 27, 2012 at 11:13 AM

Yup I remember that well. The P Bruins had many recent US Hockey team members in teh early to mid 90’s. Danato, Donnatelli, Sweeney, Macechern, etc.

  21. filthadelphiadivers - Jul 27, 2012 at 10:25 AM

The only argument Philly fans come up with is about the franchise going bankrupt. Meanwhile, the pens were never going anywhere it was all leverage to get a new arena which has sold out 200 and some odd consecutive games now. Mario used the same ploy Weber used to get a contract out of Nashville, he never wanted to play in Philly he used that offer sheet as leverage to get a ridiculous contract out of Nashville because they had no choice but to match to keep him there. So if you wanna talk about finding a new argument besides the 1975 one, find a new argument besides the bankrupt one.

And as for the person quoting the flyers record against the pens, that doesn’t translate into championships. You don’t win championships by beating one team. Because your team and city treats beating Pittsburgh like a Stanley cup game 7, you haven’t won a cup since 1975. Lol

    • handsofsweed - Jul 27, 2012 at 11:30 AM

Not so sure Weber didn’t want to play in Philly, but the rest of your argument was straight perfect. Should have left the Weber part out, as it kinda wrecks it.

  22. earlcpeacock - Jul 27, 2012 at 10:30 AM

    well put philthadelphiadivers! http://thickarmy.tumblr.com/

  23. bobhpine - Jul 27, 2012 at 10:30 AM

Flyers fans don’t care that their team hasn’t won since 1975?

    That’s why you’re pathetic.

    You lose.

    • andyb02 - Jul 27, 2012 at 5:56 PM

We are one of the largest hockey markets in the NHL. Much larger than pittsburgh. We havent won since 75 but we still fill the arena every year. Meanwhile the Pens won in 91 and 92 and lost almost their whole fanbase in the next 10 years. Don’t even try to compare your city to Philadelphia. It’s not even close.

  24. earlcpeacock - Jul 27, 2012 at 10:35 AM

i just woke up from my mothers basement and i come on here and see SCA is on fire today!!

  25. jnealsmeatymember - Jul 27, 2012 at 10:53 AM

The thing that kills me is the filly losers cant get over the fact that we have soup can and they wuld probably send him an offer sheet for $500 million, thats how jealous and jaded they are, along with being in awe of his ice presence. Sorry guys, you have nothing to offer to the nhl, no championship parades marching down ur war-zone looking streets, so just face the fact that The Franchise can not be stopped. Filly-losing since 75!

  26. mclovinhockey - Jul 27, 2012 at 10:55 AM

Easily one of the best coaches in the league.. Got to the finals twice, won once with the canes. He’s a good smart guy but needs to work out a few new systems.

  27. filthadelphiadivers - Jul 27, 2012 at 10:59 AM

Agree with Lavvy gettin an extension, had a new found respect for him and Torts both after the HBO series. Solid coach, good for him.

  28. earlcpeacock - Jul 27, 2012 at 11:01 AM

great comment jneal! by the way did u get ur latest SCA tshirt??

  29. jnealsmeatymember - Jul 27, 2012 at 11:09 AM

Earl-the shirt is scheduled to be delivered 2 day, thanks for the link. I anticipate wearing it 2night when I’m partying on the SouthSide, im sure the broads will be on their knees and DTF. The pure power of the SCA that the shirt strongly represents will likely lead to late nite lady & loads shenanigans. You get yours?

    • handsofsweed - Jul 27, 2012 at 11:35 AM

Dude, no way are you getting any action while wearing that shirt. Unless you’re in a gay bar, I would assume, which is entirely possible for you. But hey, it’s cool. Not my cup of tea, but you get in where you fit in, I guess.

  30. filthadelphiadivers - Jul 27, 2012 at 11:35 AM

The only thing that brought the Weber argument to mind is the comments that have come out since he signed that contract in Nashville, just seems he wanted to stay all along.

  31. georgia166 - Jul 27, 2012 at 11:52 AM

Im an neutral observer of both teams here but I think the Flyers would have won 3 to 4 more Cups since the last one they got in 1975, had they just found a way to sign a couple reliable Goaltenders during those years… . However In defense of Ron Hextall I think he’s one of the best Goalies in NHL history to have never won a SC.
Pittsburgh have had some powerhouses , especially in the 90’s … Barrasso was awesome , and they probably COULD have and SHOULD have won a couple more on top of the back to back Titles they got in 91 and 92,, … in 1993 they were upset by the flukey Playoff run the Isles went on.

  32. jnealsmeatymember - Jul 27, 2012 at 11:54 AM

Dude, the pure power of the SCA shirt attracts every human, look at u!

  33. earlcpeacock - Jul 27, 2012 at 1:21 PM
