Canes GM on Semin: “He’s a key player in key situations”

The Carolina Hurricanes decided to roll the dice by signing Alexander Semin to a one-year, $7 million today.

Some go back to the old “book” on Semin that he scores when the going is easy and then “disappears” in big moments, but Canes GM Jim Rutherford argued against that notion during an interview with FAN 590:

“I know there are different things being said out there publicly – some negative, some positive – but the fact of the matter is he’s a very talented player,” Rutherford said. “Based on our records, he’s a key player in key situations.”

Rutherford cited analytical stats in making the choice to sign Semin, claiming that his detractors haven’t “done their homework.”

Despite it just being a one-year deal, Rutherford expressed his hope that it will be “a long-term relationship” between Semin and the Hurricanes. Putting up more positive numbers would certainly improve those chances.

All this time I thought he was a bench warmer in key situations

What are these “key situations” he speaks of? Playoffs? 15 goals in 51 playoff games for a 7 million dollar player?

Just two less than Toews 17 in 52 playoff games.

Well, Toews also has a Stanley Cup. The year he won his cup, he made under $700,000. Since the Cup, he has only played in 13 playoff games. Toews also has a total of 50 total points…

        Semin…34 points.

        So recap:
Kane 1 Stanley Cup. 17 goals 33 assists in 52 games. 6.3 million.

Semin 0 Stanley Cup 15 goals 19 assists in 50 games. 7 million.

        Regular season:
        Kane 361 games 144 goals 180 assists 324 total points 87 +/- (.897 points per game)

        Semin 469 games 197 goals 211 assists 408 total points 65 +/- (.869 points per game)

Also, Toews is a Captain and Semin is nothing but a headache.

I am not saying Semin isn’t an amazing talent. He is. But he is also a failure (based on his career so far). If Toews ever hit the open market, there would be a bidding war bigger than Parise. Semin can’t get more than a 1 year deal. He should be the biggest FA this year but he is a cancer. It is really just pathetic.

chazxcore: I’m responding to the playoff stats you seemed to be attempting to belittle Semin for and that he’s making too much money based on said stats. Every stat you’ve quoted in your second post seems to make him comparable to Toews/Kane, not sure which one you’re comparing him to. Yes, he’s not won a cup, but neither have a lot of other players. But based on the ‘key situation’ stats and the regular season stats you’ve provided, he’s on par with Toews/Kane and well worth the money on a one year deal. You might even say Toews/Kane is/are overpaid considering they’re both on long term deals. Whatever the case, I believe Carolina has made an excellent, low risk, high reward signing of one of the premier offensive talents in the game. Good luck to them and The Hawks.

And just to note, since he scored the cup winner in 2010, Kane has ONE playoff goal, Toews has THREE and Semin has SEVEN. I also don’t think Semin has had any embarrassing drunken videos of him posted on the web. Cups? Cancer? Who’s to say?

So will Jay Paterno be releasing a statement on the Semin signing?

I have been a Caps fan for life and Semin is one of my favorite players while I wish he would have played better the last couple of years he did get lost in the coaching shuffle and he is one of if not the most talented player in the NHL and I can tell you that he will score 40 plus goals for Carolina and as a season ticket holder I can’t wait till his return
