Flyers GM on missing out on Weber: “I love our defense”

Jul 25, 2012, 2:03 PM EDT

The Flyers made their best effort to land Predators captain Shea Weber but lost out thanks to Nashville matching their 14-year, $110 million offer.

The day after the Preds matched turned into Philly GM Paul Holmgren’s postmortem on the affair and as Sarah Baicker of shares, he gave Weber his best shot but they’re moving on now.

“We looked at it as an opportunity to add one of the top defensemen, if not the top guy,” Holmgren said. “Our shot, it didn’t work. I love our defense; I love the youth of our defense. … To try and add a guy like Shea Weber doesn’t really speak to anything other than maybe you are adding one of the best guys in the league.”

As for that defense, with Luke Schenn now in town they’ve added a guy with size, but they lost some skill and mobility with Matt Carle signing in Tampa Bay. With Chris Pronger not likely to come back anytime soon, the Flyers do have some issues but Holmgren believes his young guys will fill things out.

Holmgren also says they’ll look at other guys that don’t require a trade to acquire but wouldn’t rule anything out. One thing’s for sure, never count the Flyers out of anything.

I believe your second to last paragraph contains an error. It should state they gained via addition by subtraction when Mr. Shoots Wide, shoots soft, turns the puck over and can’t take the body Matt Carle went to Tampa Bay.

  2. mclovinhockey - Jul 25, 2012 at 2:33 PM

Wanna know the difference between Carle and Schenn? EVERYTHING
Carle can score and produce Schenn can’t
Schenn can hit hard Carle can’t
Schenn is good at D Carle isn’t
Carle is good at O Schenn isn’t

They both turn over the puck more than anyone else on their team last year.

They are just different players, can’t hate them for that.

    • ml3939 - Jul 25, 2012 at 2:41 PM

Carle can score? I would debate that. He can barely hit the net. Schenn has 7 goals in the last 2 years, Carle has 6. Carle’s offense is highly overrated. It is not tough to find passing lanes when you are left wide open and top tier offense talent drawing the coverage. Carle’s numbers are clearly inflated based on the Flyers offense around him. Must be tough racking up points and finding passing lanes when Claude Giroux is garnering the attention of 2-3 players when he is on the ice.

you forgot to mention that Luke Schenn likes watching the puck go into (own net) learned that love from Dion Phaneuf. Toronto won that trade.

    • biasedhomer - Jul 25, 2012 at 5:06 PM

      You left out:

Carle has the weakest shot in the league. You dont need to wear padding and you can block his shot without pain.

    Sure you do Paul

  4. earlcpeacock - Jul 25, 2012 at 2:46 PM

soup can sid and pringles can geno love ur defense too haha philthy

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Jul 25, 2012 at 3:09 PM

Herman Munster really liked Couts’ pringles can up his rear all series long. Just remember, Mr. MVP was shut down and schooled by a 19 year old rookie.

  5. chasemutley - Jul 25, 2012 at 3:00 PM

They do? Their team got shut down and booted from the playoffs by a flyers d that was missing pronger and meszaros. They must have loved the option to hit the links early.

It’s bad enough you’re a troll, but at least be intelligent about it. Loser.

    • bmscalise - Jul 25, 2012 at 3:33 PM

Philly shut down the Pens? In what world? Sure, they beat the Pens. They also gave up 26 goals doing it: that’s 4+ goals/game. And the Flyers defense got worse. Holmgren’s talking out his backside, and if I was a Flyer fan, I’d definitely be concerned.

      • ct14flyers - Jul 25, 2012 at 5:21 PM

bmscalise- Of course he is saying he loves his defense. What should he do? Say we have an average defensive unit that will get torn apart by teams like the Penguins and the Blackhawks? He’s doing the right thing. And yes they gave up a lot of goals to the Penguins. Part if that was Bryz’s fault and part was a tired, old defense. They didn’t have Mez and Grossman was hurt but played anyway. Timmonen was exhausted. They had two uninjured defenders- Coburn and Carle. But they still beat the Penguins and if the Flyers had been as healthy as the Pens were it could have been even worse.

The ongoing love affair the Flyers fans have with these Schenn brothers is baffling …

    • nhmac - Jul 25, 2012 at 4:09 PM

Absolutely nothing baffling about it. Not a Flyers fan but a huge Brayden Schenn fan. He was unreal in the first round series.

  9. mclovinhockey - Jul 25, 2012 at 3:47 PM

Umm Carle averages 35 points a year… Schenn gets about 20.
That’s with and without giroux. Carle is great on O. He will get at least 33 points this year if healthy.

    • ml3939 - Jul 25, 2012 at 4:16 PM

If Carle is great on O with the expectation of 33 points by you, it sounds like Erik Karlsson is the love child of Wayne Gretzky and Bobby Orr amplified 10 times. Name one thing he does great on offense. And please tell me about his shot from the point that is often wide or blocked and how that qualifies as great.

  10. mclovinhockey - Jul 25, 2012 at 3:51 PM

As for the comment about flyers fans loving the schenns…
They are both good players who have more potential then they have shown.
There is a reason most GMs in the league would trade philly top of the league players for them.
I don’t love the schenns but they are good players, not great or elite but good.

    • killerpgh - Jul 25, 2012 at 4:20 PM

Luke Schenn averaged the 7th 16:02 minutes per game last year (203rd place among d-man last year in TOI/G) and that was on a bad Maple Leafs defensive unit. That was 7th among the Maple Leafs defenseman. I don’t think any GM would trade a top player for him (you never know with Howson) Differently not most GM’s like you said. Luke has been in the NHL for 4 years and has played over 300 NHL games. He is still young, but I wouldn’t expect to see him turn into a top pairing defenseman. Sure he probably will become better than a “7th” d-man in terms of average ice time on a team, but to say he is worth a top players in trade value is insane. Even if you talking about both Schenn’s I really doubt any GM would trade you a Crosby, Malkin, Stamkos, Ovechkin type of player like you said. Would you trade Giroux to get both Schenn’s? You are way overvaluing the Schenn’s.

How r u idiots still arguing bout playoff series when neither got to the cup. Pitts lost series but they do win cups and have the best player on planet when he is healthy, flyers talk win a series or 2 but then go golfing. Please no strike so fans can at least be delusional in the present tense

    • atwatercrushesokoye - Jul 25, 2012 at 5:27 PM

They do win cupS? They won one cup, which was 3 years ago, since then nothing. And as far as the “best player on the planet” Gretzky 2 has a total of one cup(2008-09), one hart trophy(2006-07), one Art Ross(2006-07)and one Richard trophy (2009-10) now don’t get me wrong those are impressive accomplishments but for “the best player on the planet” and “the next Gretzky” they’re mediocre at best. Truthfully he’s probably not even the best player on his team.

  12. dbick - Jul 25, 2012 at 3:58 PM

Flyers defense is solid and that’s it unfortunately. Good enough to compete but I’m not sure if it’s good enough to win a cup this year. Crossing our fingers Luke Schenn turns into the player the Flyers think he can be.

  13. kdmd35 - Jul 25, 2012 at 4:04 PM

i dont see how people can say the defense got any worse, they replaced a 2nd/3rd liner with a younger, more physical 2nd/3rd liner, flyers dont need carle’s “offense”… they ranked 2nd in offense for goals for even without carle they what, go down to .2, to an even 3 goals a game. I would much rather have a guy who will hit and block shots on the blue line.

  14. danphipps01 - Jul 25, 2012 at 4:49 PM

Paul Holmgren is a brave, brave man.

  15. earlcpeacock - Jul 25, 2012 at 5:37 PM

philthys defense is real good, they let up 10 goals in one game to the franchise lol EXPOSED D. haha @soupcanarmy

    • 28giroux28 - Jul 26, 2012 at 1:42 PM

Your defense let up 8 goals twice, how’s that for exposure?

  16. philly4lyfe - Jul 25, 2012 at 6:18 PM

If our D was so bad and banged up last year and you still lost to us, what’s that say about your team? And yet you continue to talk sh1t. It’d be really amusing of you werent do pathetic. Try going outside today, I hear its nice out.

  17. andyreidisfat - Jul 25, 2012 at 6:26 PM

I’ll take mez, Coburn, schenn, grossman, timo, and whom ever else they throw out from the crowd of about 4 young guys who have talent on D. That sounds good to me. Would have loved to have had Weber no doubt, but i am more than happy where they are. I do however think they need a real goal scorer to go with Giroux (the best two way player in hockey, as much as it pains me to say Geno and Crosby are still better offensive players).

If they can somehow pry Ryan away from the Ducks and keep what they have now be it by draft picks or trading minor league talent i think the Flyers have a good shot this year. Its all on if Bryz can bounce back. I think he will. But no one else got much better outside of the Rangers who i still think getting Nash for what they gave up is a good deal.

stop praising Carle he’s garbage! turnover machine! good-riddance

  19. muir6 - Jul 25, 2012 at 10:53 PM

I’m not a pens fan. But please when he is healthy there is no one better and their a better team with a better history and looks like a better future
