Really? The kid is 21, has improved every year, plays a fast, skilled yet tough game (youtube Kane Cooke fight if you live under a rock), has a great +/- on a team that let in more than a handful of goals. Give him 2-3 years and we'll be debating on what a steal he was for less than $5mil/season.

it's a good move for both player and team...

after this will expire he will be approaching his "prime" and could see big dollars then, but if his game falls off, he will still have plenty of money to live out his days very happily!

Must be nice to debate an offer like that; 5 years ago those stats earned you half of that contract.

GREAT MOVE !

Now instead of spreading his contract over 6 years, why not make it an "even Steven" 100 years for an annual cap hit of only $290,000 per ? God bless the Winnipeg Jets and all, but this brings me right back to the "elephant in the room" which we know as Luongo.

Luongo's lovers and apologists will go on "incessantly" about the fact that he's "only" a 5.4 million dollar cap hit ... and that any team "lucky enough" to land him, will be getting a "bargain" etc. What a joke I say ! That's like some car salesman who tells you that you can have that brand new "runner" for only a $135.00 monthly payment. The problem however is that he won't tell you that your payments are stretched over a 60 month period, instead of a reasonable 36 or 48 month term. Luongo has 54 million dollars remaining on his contract and yet anyone who signs him will be essentially purchasing "2 x years" of b-grade goal-tending ... nothing more and nothing less. Actually, I'm not sure why Gillis didn't amortize his contract over a thousand years ?

The bottom line is that these ludicrous long-term contracts amount to nothing more than financial "smoke and mirrors" ... and anyone who constructs such "deceit" must therefore be scum, as is anyone who willingly signs on to such deceit !
