It’s Philadelphia Flyers day on PHT

Jul 23, 2012, 10:00 AM EST

luke schenn brayden schenn

Welcome to our offseason initiative — 30 teams in 30 days.

From July 16 until Aug. 14, we’ll be dedicating each day to a new team by recapping the offseason and looking ahead to 2012-13.

There will also be a series of posts looking at key stories, player profiles and burning questions regarding each squad.

Today, we continue with the Philadelphia Flyers.

After winning a crazy first-round series against the Pittsburgh Penguins, they were unceremoniously dismissed in the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals by the New Jersey Devils.

Ilya Bryzgalov was awfully inconsistent in his first season with the Flyers and how he rebounds in 2012-13 will play a big role in determining Philadelphia’s fate. They traded Sergei Bobrovsky over the summer and intend to replace him with Michael Leighton, who spent the bulk of the last two seasons in the minors. In other words, the Flyers don’t have a particularly safe contingency plan if Bryzgalov struggles.

That being said, they have made Bryzgalov’s job easier by acquiring defensive defenseman Luke Schenn from Toronto. On top of that, they signed Shea Weber to a 14-year offer sheet, but are waiting on the Nashville Predators to either match the offer or allow him to join the Flyers.

If the Flyers miss out on Weber, they might attempt to sign Shane Doanwho was recently in Philadelphiaor go after Bobby Ryan.

Do the Philadelphia Flyers have what it takes to win the Stanley Cup this season? Stick around PHT today for more on that and other questions.

    Happy 1975 Day, everyone!!!

(I’m just screwing around. Really, I think the Flyers are a well-run organization. It’s just fun to jerk your chains every now and then).

    • dsd3 - Jul 23, 2012 at 1:20 PM

It was funny the first 700 times. Oh wait, it wasn’t. And still isn’t. Get a life.

      • Eberwizzle - Jul 23, 2012 at 3:24 PM

I’m a Flyers fan but until they win a cup you gotta suck it up buddy.

      • handsofsweed - Jul 24, 2012 at 10:59 AM

Good-natured ribbing is something you obviously can’t recognize or handle. Lighten up and read the whole thread down below. You will realize that I’m not an a-hole Pens fan like soup can.

      • dsd3 - Jul 24, 2012 at 1:14 PM

I don’t care who you root for. It’s a tiresome joke, whether you mean it or not.

  2. phillyphever - Jul 23, 2012 at 10:24 AM

Oh today’s gonna be a fun day here.

    • handsofsweed - Jul 23, 2012 at 12:47 PM

No kidding. Geno Pringles is gonna lose his mud. Sigh. Can’t wait for his antics on Pens day. That ought to be fun.

    • tbbolts91 - Jul 23, 2012 at 1:34 PM

The universe is so humangous beeg

  3. muir6 - Jul 23, 2012 at 10:24 AM

It’s their super bowl , Stanley cup and world series. Philly the city of dynasties kings of the offseason!

    • chap6869 - Jul 23, 2012 at 10:40 AM

Yeah, your right Muir6, why should the Flyers do anything to try and improve their team in the offseason for fear of getting posts from moron trollers like you!

    • mattj2524 - Jul 23, 2012 at 10:46 AM

HAHA!!! mentioned “dynasties” and the “kings” in the same post!?!?

      That’s cold muir6 – ICE COLD!

  4. m1lla7 - Jul 23, 2012 at 10:34 AM

I see multiple Cups being won by Philly in the near future.

    – Wings Fan

    • jayrod1089 - Jul 23, 2012 at 10:45 AM

i hope your right with the young talent and key moves theres no reason they shouldnt

  5. mattj2524 - Jul 23, 2012 at 10:42 AM

PHT – you don’t think it would have been a better idea to wait on “Flyers day” until a little later? Say, maybe some time after Wednesday @ 11:30 pm-ish? I think there’s a major hockey related decision that has a deadline of around then to be levied – can’t put my finger on it though….hmmmm…

  6. somekat - Jul 23, 2012 at 10:45 AM

Having Flyers day today is as dumb as having Predators day yesterday. The whole season looks different with Weber than it will without. Without knowing where he’s going to be playing today, it seems mind numbingly stupid to insist on having these 2 the past 2 days when there are what….25 teams that haven’t been done yet?

  7. napoleonblownapart6887 - Jul 23, 2012 at 10:53 AM

As a Pens fan I’m interested to see how the Flyers perform this year. Just think about how different this team is versus the one they had 18 months ago. Over the past two seasons they have had a HUGE overhaul, getting younger and putting Claude Giroux at the face of their offense, and possibly putting Shea Weber at the face of their backline. The three things I’ll be watching are:
    1) Where dos Bryz settle out? As Ryan pointed out he was terribly inconsistent, and given the money he’s due he really needs to be the top 5 goalie they thought they were getting.
    2) Where is Giroux’s ceiling? Giroux falls into a group of SCARY talent in the NHL right now that are going to be all entering their primes in the next few years. (In order of how they came to my mind) Crosby, Malkin, Giroux, Stamkos, J. Staal, Tavares, Toews, Ryan… and more that I’m forgetting. Where all these guys shake out will determine the landscape of the NHL for the next 5-8 years.
    3) How much flexibility will they have in terms of personnel? With the Schenns, Couterier, Read, and Wellwood seeming to be fixtures of the big club moving forward, are they going to be able/willing to deal those guys if need be to make changes to the club? Their farm system is depleted (primarily because their prospects are making an impact at the NHL level), and financially they will have quite a lot of money tied up in a few guys (assuming Giroux gets the huge contract that’s coming to him in a couple of years).

    Very interesting stuff.

    • paresident21 - Jul 23, 2012 at 1:00 PM

As a pens fan who looks to actually have sense please try to talk some sense into the idiot lloydssister who is posting incredibly disturbing things about the colorado shootings below this should be kept to sports its out of hand

      • napoleonblownapart6887 - Jul 23, 2012 at 1:51 PM

Not worth the time or the energy… which is saying something as I clearly had the time and the energy to write a dissertation on a hockey team that isn’t even mine!

  8. mclovinhockey - Jul 23, 2012 at 10:57 AM

It’s astonishing how much harder the PHT group made their jobs by not waiting till the weber domino falls

  9. georgia166 - Jul 23, 2012 at 11:16 AM

It’s Stanley Cup or bust in Philadelphia, each and every year. The fan base is growing impatient as they should. This organization should have won 3 or 4 cups since they last hoisted one in 75 with some of the talented rosters they have had. There’s no such word as lets rebuild with youth and wait for the youth to grow in Flyersville .

  10. DED - Jul 23, 2012 at 11:17 AM

As a Rangers fan, I have no doubt that Philly will have another strong season, with or without Weber.

  11. lloydpricessister - Jul 23, 2012 at 11:17 AM

philthadelphia day today huh? hahaha. its @SoupCanArmy take over day!!! philthadelphia will never win another cup as long as we are alive. They are a bunch of whiney, dirty, gingery scumbags that shouldnt even be in the nhl. Get rid of them. STAY GIRTHY

    • chap6869 - Jul 23, 2012 at 11:21 AM

And yet the Flyers beat your crappy team, hmmmm. STAY STUPID

    • ron05342 - Jul 23, 2012 at 11:54 AM

I really don’t understand how a fan of a team that allowed 30 goals in one six-game playoff series can come in here and rag on the very team that destroyed them.

I believe you are really, really mentally challenged, lloyd. Time to seek help.

  12. lloydpricessister - Jul 23, 2012 at 11:30 AM

you poor philthy fans.. i know its upsetting when you havent won the soup can cup in 37 years and probably wont for another 37 but relax… the REAL team from PA will get the job done as usual so jump on the soup can train and ride the thickness into the promise land. STAY TORQUED SCA

    • chap6869 - Jul 23, 2012 at 11:37 AM

Isn’t it about time for your Pens to go bankrupt again FROM LACK OF FAN INTEREST! hahaha

      • handsofsweed - Jul 23, 2012 at 12:52 PM

No, chap, not even a remote chance in the coldest of hells.

    • handsofsweed - Jul 23, 2012 at 12:54 PM

Wow. That may be the most h0m0erotic thing you’ve EVER posted. That actually kinda made my skin crawl. Yikes.

  13. fiyeaglesfiy - Jul 23, 2012 at 11:37 AM

Isn’t everyday Philadelphia Flyers day on PHT?

  14. cleverbob - Jul 23, 2012 at 11:46 AM

I like to imagine he’s wearing stained Penguins Zubaz pants as he bangs out that drivel on his keyboard.

  15. lloydpricessister - Jul 23, 2012 at 11:46 AM

everyday on pht is the franchise day with soup can sid. and PAs FRANCHISE has way more fans than philthy. Its just like the steelers. everybody loves them cus we win brah. suck on a soup can. 1975

  16. muir6 - Jul 23, 2012 at 11:51 AM

Didn’t mean to burn your chaps go outside and mug an innocent guy wearing a different jersey you ll feel better

    • chap6869 - Jul 23, 2012 at 1:29 PM

Hey, no sweat muir6, you didn’t bother me at all……now go get your shoeshine box Biotch!

  17. phillyphan83 - Jul 23, 2012 at 11:52 AM

wow, its pretty sad when there’s more content in the comments section than in the actual story

    • cleverbob - Jul 23, 2012 at 12:03 PM

I’d hardly describe what the Pittsburgh trolls have to say as “content”.

  18. predsfan098 - Jul 23, 2012 at 12:00 PM

ok you Fliers fans…..Shea Weber will be a Nashville Predator for life. Oh, you dangled a nice big carrot all right, but don’t think for a minute that the Predators can’t match any offer. So you might want to move on to plan B.

  19. lloydpricessister - Jul 23, 2012 at 12:00 PM

its amusing to see how delusional all of philthadelphia gets in the offseason like something great is going to happen next season. lol 37 years of pure dissapointment… dont get the picture yet? haha you poor bastards i wonder what that feels like. STAY PHILTHY

  20. 28giroux28 - Jul 23, 2012 at 12:05 PM

So, its only noon, and “Philadelphia Flyers Day” has already degraded into “Flame War Between Immature Fans of Atlantic Division Teams Day”. This oughta be fun.

  21. flyersgoalscoredby88 - Jul 23, 2012 at 12:28 PM

It’s sad that I no longer believe people’s usernames…even “Predsfan” up above I’m like 30% convinced it’s that idiot Pittsburgh fan with 30+ logins just trolling.

  22. jnealsmanmeat - Jul 23, 2012 at 12:42 PM

Filthy day on PHT? Thats the hardest I laughed since 1975!!! Doesnt matter what so-called “talent” they have in that sh!ty city, they can never compete with soupcan sid and raise a cup. His Thickness always prevails!! Lets hav some soup this afternoon and celebrate his schlong and package. @soupcanarmy

  23. lloydpricessister - Jul 23, 2012 at 12:43 PM

i was suprised when i heard that batman theatre shooting was in colorado. i would have put my money on it being in philthy since its a rat infested high crime rate scum bag city. if that would have happened in the city of champions, soup can sid would have dropped down from the ceiling and shot a web out of his girthy member thus trapping the evil villian. STAY BLOATED

    • ron05342 - Jul 23, 2012 at 12:57 PM

What an incredibly disgusting, distasteful, and outrageous comment. You ought to be absolutely ashamed of yourself.

This is absolutely one of the worst things I have ever read on ProHockeyTalk. This is beyond hockey team rivalries. You are a very sick person.

    • handsofsweed - Jul 23, 2012 at 12:59 PM

Sigh. And we have to apologize for/distance ourselves from you again. We’re not all like him, guys. Really.

      • napoleonblownapart6887 - Jul 23, 2012 at 1:48 PM

Ditto. My hope is that people can separate Penguins fans from this Soup Can trash….

    • melonheadsdaddy - Jul 23, 2012 at 1:03 PM

You my friend are the EPITOME of a classless fan. I won’t waste time explaining the definition but KARMA prevails more than girth. You and you 30+ logins will see that first hand. God bless all the victims and families affected by a senseless act in Colorado….

  24. paresident21 - Jul 23, 2012 at 12:50 PM

Are you serious? lloyd? this is a sports forum and you are showing no class whatsoever, that was a tragedy that happened and you are just making yourself look like an idiot keep it to sports people lost loved ones a 6 year old girl was murdered, show some class it really doesn’t matter what team you root for

  25. lloydpricessister - Jul 23, 2012 at 12:57 PM

i heard james holmes is a flyers fan

    • handsofsweed - Jul 23, 2012 at 1:00 PM

Wish you would have been in the front row.

  26. lloydpricessister - Jul 23, 2012 at 1:03 PM

    james holmes loves philthadelphia

    • melonheadsdaddy - Jul 23, 2012 at 1:06 PM

PHT there absolutely HAS TO BE something you can do about this Scumbag…at least filter his trashy comments…

  27. lloydpricessister - Jul 23, 2012 at 1:09 PM

melonhead… your mother contracted aids in philthadelphia. suck my soup can.

    • handsofsweed - Jul 23, 2012 at 1:21 PM

Hey, man. Enough, PLEASE. Some of your stuff is funny sometimes, but don’t think for a second that Lemieux and/or Rooney wouldn’t be completely offended by you right about now.

    • chap6869 - Jul 23, 2012 at 1:27 PM

Nothing but class from a POS Pens fan!!!!

    • melonheadsdaddy - Jul 23, 2012 at 5:43 PM

My mother actually passed away 5 years ago from cancer. Thanks for the reminder. 8.10.07. RIP SUZY Q

  28. antmel30 - Jul 23, 2012 at 1:39 PM

To loydpricessister you must be the dumbest kid. You are truly a front runner fan. I guess you forget how u got Crosby, stall, Malkin, and fluery. I tell you how it’s because u guys were the Tampa buccaneers of hockey. I wish the flyers had six straight loosing seasons so we can get the number one pick 5 straight times. The flyers over the past 20 years are one of winningest franchises in hockey and sports for that matter. Only Detroit has longer playoff apesrence streak. You talk about the pens like they are a dynasty. They have one cup and haven’t made it past the second round in three years and I think got bounced from the first round last two. Pitt is biggest underachieving team in sports. They have arguably two of the best three players in hockey. It’s ashame all those two players do is cry and whine all game. Much like their fans acoording to your post. To say Penns has bigger fan base than Philly is laughable. You must only know the past six years of Penns hockey and two years in ninetys because your facts are based on present time but your leaving out the other 90 % of Penns existence when they were one of the worst organizations in hockey closing in on bankruptcy.

    • claysbar - Jul 23, 2012 at 1:54 PM

Malkin was #2 overall, just saying

      • flyersgoalscoredby88 - Jul 23, 2012 at 3:01 PM

I think he meant a top 5 pick 5 years in a row, with four of them being top 2. Ironically, only two of these picks were the right pick, and both were no-brainers.

  29. jnealsmanmeat - Jul 23, 2012 at 1:41 PM

Whys everyone getting all fired up about the reality lloydssister speaks of? Philthy has 17 of these types of shootings before breakfast is over every philthy day. I mean c.mon people, if u wana rally about something like that, my suggestion is to join @soupcanarmy where we discuss what soup can sid would do in every type of situation known to man. Lets solve the worlds problems @soupcanarmy. Hopefully philthydelfia has enough room to bury their dead.

  30. lloydpricessister - Jul 23, 2012 at 1:53 PM

you should be ashamed of yourself napoleanblowmeoff, if ur not in the soup can army then you are NOT a pens fan. stop being a tough guy and join the revolution of the best hockey supporters in the world. we own the nhl with the greatest fans – way more fans than philthy- and stanley cups! there is no comparision that the franchise rules all sports. THANK GOD FOR A CITY LIKE PITTSBURGH. WE OWN YOU

  31. jnealsmanmeat - Jul 23, 2012 at 2:06 PM

Napoleonblowinfarts is probably sum virgin grande chick that eats country crock butter by the spoonful for all her meals. Keep lookin in the mirror and violently puking and shreading turds off into ur sausage link-fingered hands, u disgust all of the Real Pens fans in @soupcanarmy. But feel free to join friend, we forgive all, just like our lord soup can sid!

  32. antmel30 - Jul 23, 2012 at 2:06 PM

Why did Sandusky pray on boys when he was only two hours from Crosby and Malkin two of the biggest fruit loops in hockey

    • handsofsweed - Jul 24, 2012 at 2:35 PM

And then you go and make a Sandusky crack, thus putting yourself squarely in the same league as this idiot. Perfect.

  33. antmel30 - Jul 23, 2012 at 2:09 PM

It’s funny how all these Pitt fans are blogging all day no wonder you guys almost went bankrupt go to work loosers

  34. lloydpricessister - Jul 23, 2012 at 2:17 PM

u cant hurt @soupcanarmys feelings. we know were the greatest and YOU know we are too. stop the jealousy hate and move to the greatest city in the world. the city that knows how to win! WE ARE GREAT AND GIRTHY. EAT MY SOUP CAN HATERS

All the Rangers did was save the Flyers from possibly making a huge mistake in ever trading for Nash. Thank you.

  44. govtminion - Jul 23, 2012 at 8:52 PM

Your usual crap aside, Penguin Troll… making fun of the deaths of 12 innocent people is utterly despicable. Why the PHT gang tolerate you being here is beyond me, but I hope you at least have some shame for posting this sort of thing today. Just disgusting filth from you today.
