I think Lidstrom deserves to be in anyone’s top 5 d-men of all-time list. He played at such a high level for so long, he’s pretty much irreplaceable. He retires and they didn’t bring in any elite d-men to replace him.

I think they make the playoffs. But one serious injury or two, and they could easily be out of the playoffs. Losing an elite, all-world d-man is that valuable to a team, IMO. If you need any proof look at Shea Weber’s situation. Giving up four first-round picks for the right to sign him to a 14 year, $110 million contract.

Exactly – no panic necessary.

This year ‘is what it is’, but very positive AND keeping a TON of money for future.

I’d prefer to do most of the rebuilding… from within.

The Wings have the youth to help get them through this. They faced the same kind of issue in the early 2000′s when all their impact players started getting older. That’s when they brought in young players like Datsyuk and Zetterberg. As a Wings fan I’m exciting to see what Nyquist and Smith can bring to the table.
