“Small-town guy” Weber was hesitant to sign with the Rangers

As you’ve probably heard by now, the Philadelphia Flyers and Shea Weber have agreed to a massively frontloaded 14-year offer sheet. Nashville now has seven days to match it or accept draft picks as compensation for losing Weber.

It looks like Philadelphia wasn’t the only city that Weber considered signing with. According to ESPN’s sources, he did have some interest in playing with the New York Rangers. The problem is that Weber was apparently hesitant to accept the big city life that came with being a member of the Rangers.

“(Weber) is a small-town guy and (New York) is a huge city,” Weber’s agent, Jarrett Bousquet said. “With New York, it was nothing personal. He thought everything, from the ownership to the hockey operations to the coaching was unbelievable. (Philadelphia) just seemed to be a better fit at this time in his career.”

So…instead of signing with the New York Rangers, “small-town guy” Weber decided to go to Philadelphia, with its very passionate fanbase and metropolitan population of roughly 6 million? Uh, okay…

If the Predators let him go, then Weber could be in for quite an adjustment after spending his entire career to date in Nashville. That being said, Weber is one of the best defensemen in the league and I’m not about to bet against him.

I knew he was going to the Flyers when I heard he was getting fitted for a shield.

  2. phillyphever - Jul 19, 2012 at 6:04 PM

He could always live in South Jersey (a la Briere when he chose Philly over Montreal).

  3. brijon24 - Jul 19, 2012 at 6:11 PM

Scared of New York? Sounds like he was made for the Flyers

    • isithockeyseasonyet - Jul 19, 2012 at 6:18 PM

rangers owned the flyers bg time last year, no question, but it’s been a close rivalry for years, nobody is scared of new york, sorry

    • Eberwizzle - Jul 19, 2012 at 7:14 PM

I’m a Flyers fan but Rangers have a cup in my lifetime and Flyers don’t….we ALWAYS lose arguments like this

  4. aphoticapex - Jul 19, 2012 at 6:14 PM

As a Preds fan, I feel like we’re getting Mike Brown’ed. (Sadly a Bengals, NFL, fan too.)

  5. solador78 - Jul 19, 2012 at 6:23 PM

He’s probably just an Always Sunny in Philly and PSU fan. I’m sure he’ll fit right in.

    • ucaneverscorenoughgoals - Jul 19, 2012 at 7:26 PM

That’s just lowbrow………..lumping him in with PSU automatically assumes money and perception matter more to him doing what’s ri……wait a minute……ohhhhh I see what you’re driving at…

    • emoser - Jul 19, 2012 at 11:47 PM

If he’s coming to Philly to be near PSU then somebody needs to buy him a map. NYC is closer to the city than State College.

  6. The Baseball Gods - Jul 19, 2012 at 6:24 PM

It has nothing to do with the fans. When his agent said he is not a big city guy he meant that Shea Weber didn’t want to make his residence in a big city. With Philadelphia you have the option of living in South Jersey which is a very suburban area.

  7. mmazzzzzz - Jul 19, 2012 at 6:34 PM

afraid on NY…well he should be. We own the Flyers…lol

    • eaglesfan723 - Jul 19, 2012 at 6:38 PM

Just because “you” had a good season last year doesn’t mean you should get all hype..just sayen.

    • lostpuppysyndrome - Jul 19, 2012 at 7:56 PM

@mmazzzzzz, the Jets beat the Flyers 3-1 in their regular season series last year so I wouldn’t necessarily go bragging here…

  8. eaglesfan723 - Jul 19, 2012 at 6:35 PM

Yea I’de hate to dissapoint all you new york fans one is scared of your city. Also, you don’t have to go to South Jersey to live in a suburban area…there are plenty 5-10 minutes away from Philadelphia.

  9. billsfan13594 - Jul 19, 2012 at 6:52 PM

    He’s not scared of NY.

    He just hates hipsters:

  10. jacketsfan7 - Jul 19, 2012 at 7:16 PM

No he just knows how much attention hell get in Philly , addicted to the limelight

  11. joelwrobinson - Jul 19, 2012 at 7:23 PM

I feel bad for their fan base.

  12. mattybo - Jul 19, 2012 at 7:29 PM

Here is to hoping that Nashville matches and this dilldough gets his “small-town” wishes. Unless he can play goalie, i’m not too worried.

  13. dasportsninja - Jul 19, 2012 at 8:11 PM

Weber is a sell out punk, just like Linn. If they actually wanted to stay with their current teams they would have designed the contracts a little more amiable towards their current organization!

  14. maria716 - Jul 19, 2012 at 9:10 PM

This has got to be one of the lamest excuses I’ve ever heard for not signing with a team. Let’s cut through the BS. This wasn’t about New York being “too big” it was about money. The end.

  15. andyreidisfat - Jul 19, 2012 at 9:20 PM

It could just be the guy has in the end only two teams he would like to play for right now. One is the Flyers (who might add, is a place a ton of free agents do want to play) or Nashville. NY sucks (before i hear about the one year you had a better record than the flyers, you have ONE cup in the last hundred years and we have three and the Flyers haven’t been a team half as long as the rangers , so whats your point) and this is his way of saying it nicely (also its a good excuse as to why your happy staying in Nashville if they match).

Still makes Homer look smart for stopping the Rangers from getting a guy like Weber no matter what happens.

    • nyrangersnation - Jul 19, 2012 at 11:46 PM

hahahahahahaha you my friend, are a MORON! Last hundred years would be 1912 would it not? That would mean the Rangers would have 4 cups and you’d still have 3. Idiot.(To be fair I’m sure that was an exaggeration because you can’t be that freaking stupid. With that said, you have one more Cup than us since you came into the league. We have the last one and to be really nitpicky, we have the better Cup winning percentage. But, that is a simpleton’s point) What’s your team done in the last 25 years huh? And regardless, I have tremendous respect for the Flyers Organization. It’s the fans I have a problem with because you are arrogant and don’t know dick about hockey. (To be fair, there are a lot of Rangers fans who are the same way. But a majority know their stuff in my experience). And let’s see, the top free agents of the last few years, Mike Richards, Brad Richards, Scott Gomez, Marian Gaborik, Chris Drury, Ryan Suter, Zach Parise. Let’s do a count shall we. That’s 4 for the Rangers, two for the Wild, and just one for the Flyers. (Again to be fair, I’m sure I’m missing a few or might’ve put one or two who were trades). You traded your backup goalie for basically nothing leaving you with just ILYA “My five-hole so humungous big” BRYZGALOV. And just so everyone knows, Philly has suburban areas 5-10 minutes outside the city. What do you call Long Island? New Jersey? Westchester? They may not be 5-10 minutes outside of the city but they are less than an hour. Forget about the one year we had this year because you can just throw two years ago in our faces. We have a BETTER TEAM THAN YOU DO (on paper at least). We have better defense and MUCH MUCH better goaltending. I’ll give you this, if you do sign Weber, I’m afraid of the Flyers. But don’t ever try to say NY sucks. And if I seem a tad aggressive in this, you can thank all of the moronic meatheaded Philly fans who think it’s cool to mug opposing teams fans.

      • slickvb82 - Jul 20, 2012 at 11:38 AM

love listening to you east coast anger management crazies yell at each other!

  16. mattybo - Jul 19, 2012 at 9:24 PM

Congrats, you won a cup when Gerald Ford was president, who was born in 1913. Go back to enjoying counting your superbowl rings and the beginning of your dynasty with Vick and co.

  17. suckitny - Jul 19, 2012 at 9:29 PM

Those arrogant fans… Go count your rings crap… Tired of assholes like this. Shut up. Arrogant anti Philly fans

  18. mmazzzzzz - Jul 19, 2012 at 9:32 PM

Flyers fans obviously can’t handle the truth.

      • illadelphiasphinest - Jul 20, 2012 at 1:55 AM

Ok u got us on Super Bowls

Tom Coughlin’s wind burnt cold face LESS THEN Andy Ried’s jelly belly

Mara Family( actully the Rooney Family technically) LESS THEN Will Smith

ARoid LESS THEN 10 time gold glove 400hr club HOF’er Michael Jack Schmidt

Star Spangled banner?? Really.. ? It was written by Francis Scott Key of Baltimore sooo thats just a fail. Philadelphia Freedom all the way!!

Who is Carrie Bradshaw? Or Wilt the Stilt.. He only scored 100 points in one game n banged about 100000000000 sluts. PIMP!!!

Mike Tyson a movie star………..LOL No son Will Smith is a Movie Star n Rockey doesn’t need to take a bite outa your ear to get a decision.

NY NY or Livin here in Allentown by Billy Joel…. NY NY is wayyy played out Fail NY NY!!

Statue of Liberty or THE FREAKIN LIBERTY BELL……. Really a gift from the French or a symbol of LIBERTY… Liberty Bell takes it hands down.

SNL who even watches that anymore? Or Boy Meets World every morning at 7am… Come on now Tapanga………

GTA what are you 14? Liberty City?????

Columbia is WAYYYY LESS THEN UPENN!!!! Last time I checked UPENN is the leader in pretty much every medical field imaginable.

PHILLY where the Decleration of Independance was signed, The Gettysberg Address, Battle of Valley Forge or NY where pretty much nothing of historical signifigance has ever happened besides a national tradgedy…. WIN PHILLY.

  19. bobhpine - Jul 19, 2012 at 10:33 PM

Shea Weber is right…Philly is a small time town…except with more crime, more traffic, horrific people and a healthy inferiority complex brought on by decades of not winning…maybe he can live in the same neighborhood as Elton Brand, “Bryz” and that dude who electrocutes dogs…his address will be 1975 Loser Way, apartment F

  20. jimw81 - Jul 19, 2012 at 11:23 PM

I guess Cliff Lee called him and told him to stay away from New York

  21. mattybo - Jul 20, 2012 at 8:39 AM

Your post just made my hangover so much worse with the headache your mongoloid ramble gave me.

Keep in mind I despise the yankees buuuuuttt you call out a current yankee to compare to the best philly ever? I guess Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Derek Jeter, Yogi Berra, Mariano Rivera etc. etc. don’t count.

Correct me if i’m wrong, but I think the Star Spangled Banner reference was talking about what each venue plays before games, not who wrote it….hence the live….and on video part after what he said.

I won’t even argue basketball portion because i could care less – but you still have a junk franchise.

Don’t even try comparing movie stars from NY since it is the breeding ground for 80% of actors…btw ROCKY, not ROCKEY was played by Sly Stallone, who is from NY City. He chose Philadelphia because the underdog story went better by basing him out of a dump like Philly.

Columbia vs. UPenn is a wash, they are both Ivy League. You arguing anything about education levels is hilarious by itself.

“PHILLY where the Decleration of Independance was signed, The Gettysberg Address” This is the point where I think you are a NY fan trolling me and taking advantage of my weakened state when i’m hungover. You manage to massacre DECLARATION AND INDEPENDENCE and GETTYSBURG.

signifigance has ever happened besides a national tradgedy…. WIN PHILLY.

I’ll use it in a sentence for you – Your franchises and english are tragic.

  22. anthonykornheiser - Jul 20, 2012 at 9:50 AM

You’re also glancing over the fact that Rocky isn’t real. He is comparing Rocky to Mike Tyson, is that a joke? He also missed the fact that Philly and NY actually played in a championship/world series in 09 and the yankees waxed them. Let’s just put all this to bed, their biggest champion is a fictional character, its pathetic.

  23. georgia166 - Jul 20, 2012 at 11:58 AM

NYR 1 cup in 72 years lol.. the Flyers meanwhile have won 2 with several other trips to the Finals in their history. Plus they have been beaten the Rags overall more times in head to head playoff series . Since the Flyers have come into the League , they have been a much better franchise then the Rangers by a long shot. The flyers we’re in most of these games they lst to that over rated Flukey Rangers squad of last season, I’m sure things will get back to normal in no time with the Flyers kicking around the Blueshirts like Red headed step sisters . Asham albit it I liked him alot as a Flyer, might wanna watch his back when Rinaldo and Sestito are out on the ice

  24. muir6 - Jul 20, 2012 at 12:25 PM

He loves golf and being a flyer gives him more time to play

  25. muir6 - Jul 20, 2012 at 12:27 PM

Philly is a city of dynasties just ask Vick

  26. georgia166 - Jul 20, 2012 at 1:42 PM

The NYR, winning percentage wise the worst team of the NHL’s Original 6 , they can virtually brag about a whole lot of nothing ! , took an ex Flyer coach in Mike Keenan for them to get their rented Cup in 94 and took Freddy the Fog Shero another ex Flyer coach to get them oooh la la sassoon queers to the Finals that they lost in 79.
I bet that the few Real Rag fans on here recall the virtual beating that Dale Rolfe took back in 74 or 75 (cant recall which) from Schultz , ahahhahaa

    • jkay1818 - Jul 20, 2012 at 1:52 PM

are you done? take a deep breath. stand up and walk away from the computer, crawl out of the basement and get some air. You’re on a roll man. Youre on such a rant your run on sentences don’t even make sense. You aren’t that funny that you have to keep doing “hahahaha” and “lol” in your posts. You’re cracking yourself up. Congrats on winning the stanley cup though, we will start the parade the same time as the eagles parade for again winning the sb for the 5th yr in a row before the season starts.

  27. georgia166 - Jul 20, 2012 at 1:45 PM

Oh and I also cant recall a time where the Flyers had missed making the Playoffs 7 straight years with the Leagues highest payroll !!! like the Rags did lol!!

  28. georgia166 - Jul 20, 2012 at 2:01 PM

Jay the grammar cop, you misspelled your screen name (maybe your last name?) you have a K there instead of a G like it’s supposed to read. There are settings to fix that Nancy boy

  29. muir6 - Jul 21, 2012 at 11:15 AM

Philly fans have nothing to brag on bringing up the 70 s joke! It’s all about the present u have nothing except for the dynasty that is the Eagles

    • phillyboy20 - Jul 22, 2012 at 8:01 PM

not going to argue with that, but 94 isn’t the present either
