“Labor unrest” curbs Caps’ Convention for fans

Even if a lockout never happens, the threat of such an event has canceled some great fan events already. The annual tradition of starting the season overseas (aka the NHL Premiere games) was shelved for at least this year. The latest similarly curbed event appears to be the Capitals Convention, which CSNWashington.com’s Chuck Gormley notes was canceled due to “labor unrest.”

Here’s the official statement via Capitals owner Ted Leonsis and the Capitals.

The Capitals Convention has been a tremendous success in its first three years, attracting sold-out crowds of more than 6,500 fans to the day-long interactive celebration of the Washington Capitals. This annually features the entire Capitals roster and prominent alumni from around the world.

In the past, the Caps Convention has been held in late September or early October. Due to the uncertainty surrounding the collective bargaining agreement, the Capitals have decided not to hold a convention in 2012, but the event will return in the fall of 2013.

At least it’ll be back for Caps fans next year.

The annual tradition of starting in Europe…a tradition dating back to….2007.

Yeah count me as those that will not miss this. What a lousy way to start off a season, 11am on a weekday! But as long as the 10,000 people who attended the game were pleased – no need to worry about us in North America. Just come get your billions whenever you’re ready, hmmmk?

To me, the dumbest thing about the NHL games in Europe was that the US TV of them treated them as regular games and completely skipped telling us anything about the setting. The Olympics always show and tell us cool stuff about the host nation, but to have a game from Helsinki for example and not do a feature on cool stuff about that place and just do the usual vapid player interviews has always struck me as a waste. IMHO.

The Caps have enough fans to host an actual Convention? Dig the jerseys, no respect for the leaders of the team, except Laich. Hunter was best thing they had going. Green is The Tool from High School who had tiny IQ but scored chicks cause he excelled at sports, Oviebisca one trick pony, and Backstrom is averse to being accountable unless it’s a Power Play situation. Love the uniforms, still lookIng for the guts, determination, and will to win. Sorry Caps fans, your team is built with Balsa Wood not Oak.

Fair point, those are all great reasons for the team not to hold a convention for their many fans to enjoy. Really they should just close the doors on Verizon Center so no one has to go to games either, right?

      Troll.

You have no idea what you are talking about. Go do a handstand and fap.

I can guess which team you actually cheer for. Sounds a lot like jealousy to me. The Caps are a great team with great fans (there are a few idiots). Haven’t won a cup yet, but we know it’s coming. I personally wouldn’t trade the Caps for any other team in the league. Take your hate and jealousy elsewhere, you aren’t wanted here. By the way, when was the last time you actually went to a hockey game? Oh and yeah, you’re an idiot.

It’s too bad that this has been cancelled because it’s a great event and I was looking forward to going again this year. Couldn’t care less about the games in europe since i can’t watch them anyways. Hope the NHL and NHLPA get a deal done soon.

For the love of god! Why dont you go make out with whatever fat head poster you have in your room of your favorite players and stop ripping on the caps.
Go ahead talk about heart do it, talk trash about ovi, if or when he wins a cup it’s going to be a whole new ballgame. “oh yea wel that will never happen” yea? Well shove it cause it will people. Maybe not this year but the players are there and more good ones are one the way.

Leonsis gets way too much praise in DC for not doing much. If it wasnt for Ovi falling into his lap, what has Leonsis done?

He is a good PR guy and his PR for himself is fantastic, but he is also stingy and thinks he is smarter than everyone else.

Labor unrest? Already the spin doctors are busy! More like owner unrest.

It really blows my mind why people hate Gary Bettman so much……

Blackhawks are doing there convention and it goes the entire weekend. Not just one day. Don’t see why caps aren’t doing there’s. And glad no games overseas.
