@napoleon:
When did I ever say I was against Crosby's contract? I didn't. I said it's unfair to give Green a bunch of shat for injuries when Crosby is in the same boat. And I'm not saying he has a higher reqard but I will say this: Count the # of guys who can potentially hit the offensive numbers Crosby does. I can say about 6-10 in any given year (primarily Ovi, Malkin, Stamkos, either Sedin, Nash). Now count how many 2 time Norris Trophy candidates have had back to back seasons where they put up 130+ pts. Not saying he WILL hit that number, but if we are talking upside and best case scenario, there it is. For $3M less per year and several years less, that's the Caps upside for Green.

@soupcansid-
So would you also say Peyton Manning is still the best QB in the NFL even though he's missed extended time? Give me a full season before backing up your "best in the game" claim. If he puts up this year, I'll shut up about it, but I need more proof than a handful of games to end the season and one round of the playoffs where they lost.

Don't necessarily have an issue with the Green deal. It's risk and reward. If he can stay healthy your probably underpaying him. If he can't well then it probably wasn't worth it.

All contracts, no matter the term, no matter the player are exercises in risk and prospecting. With that in mind, both the Crosby deal and the Green deal are fine. Neither team should be catching flak for the deal.

I will say this though: the possible reward is a lot higher on the Crosby side than the Green side, but I would assume no one would argue that, no matter what they "rock."

I would only take doughty, chara, byfuglien, karlsson, and maybe keith and myers over him. Visnovsky, boyle and timmonen are too old, and bouwmeester just doesn't put up the numbers to justify his cap hit. Burns and seabrook seem to have a 50 point cap, where as the guys i named could quite possibly make it to 60 and some even 70. For green this contract seems just fine compared to other similar players

Fine, I dont agree with all but he is still therefore in good company $$ wise if you better than half the list.

And JBo is supposedly the most overpaid dman in the league according to many, Keith is spotty, Burns, eh,.

Doughty is the only one I would take for sure. Chara is old, Karlsson is Green 2.0, Boyle is old, etc.

I don't know if you saw the same game i did, but i saw a player sacrifice for his team and take a shot to the head. Then for you to say "i will give him credit for blocking more shots but he has poor technique in that even. see video….lmao."

I know this is a dumb question to ask, but im going to do it any ways.. How NHL games have you played as a D-man? I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say none. Just don't knock a guy for using his head.

Crosby will retire before Ovechkin will decline.

He was only in the top 5 for scoring in the NHL last year. Watch out people, he's declining because he can't get 50+ goals a year anymore.

And keep in mind, Ovechkin found a way to score and make the most of his time in a defense-first system, especially with career lows in TOI in the playoffs. He's not declining, but learning and finding better ways to add some offense.

Wow you read me like a book from one comment, huh? OR, we could say that I've been playing hockey since I was a kid and I've watched the Caps since I was a kid, right around the time Carrey was traded to the Bruins for Oatesy and Tochett (amongst other parts being moved) and I can proudly say I come from a hockey family. This comparison was made based on one thing and one thing only: big name. big contract. serious injuries over the past few seasons. I was simply stating that Green is catching flack because he's had some down D years up til 2011-12, had some injuries, and people automatically call him garbage and say he's overpaid. On the other hand, you have Crosby coming off of 2 injury plagued seasons who's always been referred to as not as physical of a player as he should be (put nicely, a wuss). So 2 players with the same injury situation, the same issue where they're being knocked for an aspect of their game, and yet Crosby was never questioned for his contract, while Green is being scrutinized. That's about it. Name me another player with a similar situation and I'll compare those 2, it just happened to be a Pitt player and Pens fans are so insecure they think anytime you mention Crosby it's an attack on them. Get over yourselves.

And regarding the fairweather fan comment, and stating I didn't know a team existed until 2005: considering the Pens fanbase was down to nothing prior to Crosby, I'd say maybe throwing stones in a glass house isn't the best idea now is it?

Well put Jim. Agree 100%.

As far as Sasha goes, the ONLY reason I'd resign him is because he now has a chip on his shoulder, realizing that the market is not as lucrative as he thought and nobody is clamoring for a player with good stats but poor attitude, penalties, etc. I can imagine we could bring him back for a 2 yr deal and that offense would be potent under Oatesy.

not many people have watched green play since 2010 because he has barely played. i watch the caps all the time, he gets burned trying to pinch, gets outworked in his own corners and often blows coverage in front of his net. he is weak on his stick, guys get under him all the time. i will give him credit for blocking more shots but he has poor technique in that even. see video....lmao.

GMGM always keeps to himself if he's gonna sign someone or not. I kind of hope he signs Sasha (Semin for those non-Caps fans) because Ribeiro/Backstrom would create some nice opportunities. However on the other hand, CSNWashington reports that we signed Wojtek Wolski for a real cheap price to "replace Semin". If GMGM doesn't resign Sasha I hope Wolski can bounce back from his past couple seasons.

As for Green, the real topic here, sure he's not the best defender but to say he's not stepped up his D means you are either a hater, don't watch Caps games, or are just plain ignorant. Regardless of who it was, everybody learned an important lesson from Hunter, whether it was the system or the will to sacrifice whatever it took to win.

I'm looking forward to Green having a bounce-back and healthy year.
