Ovechkin – under contract for a good while
Backstrom – under contract for a good while
Laich – Under contract…another 5 years
Semin – not coming back
Green – not going to arbitration, so accepting a pretty much flat salary
Carlson – looking at $2m/year
hmmm…..
the Crabb and Wolski signings were small hits in terms of both term and salary.
so….the money is there., and the team needs Doan type leadership.

Perhaps a previous commentary touched on this (there is a LOT of speculation here), but it seems to me everyone has missed one simple point: Just like Nash, Doan wants to stay near his family. He wants to stay in the west. That pretty much eliminates all the teams mentioned in these posts….

Agreed.

I would love to see Doan as a Ranger, but not for a $7.5 million cap hit over the next four years. The guys a very solid player, but lets be honest… hes on the downside of his career and his production is likely to fall over those four years.

100% no on Buffalo. (NO, NO, NO, NO!). Pegula is rich, but don’t confuse wealth with stupidity. Buffalo didn’t throw that kind of money at a 35 year old for 4 years (sorry kids). I’d put this on Philly 1st, NYR 2nd, and (oh) Boston 3rd. Philly just got excited because there was an expensive forward out there; not necessarily knowing exactly who that was. They just threw out Nash dollars and hoped to trade everybody to make room. NYR heard that Philly was involved, and remembered how awesome the Scott Gomez deal was, so why not throw out 7.5 at a 35 year old- it’s a freggin bargain. I just kinda threw BOS out there. In all honesty, if Boston were in play, I’d think Doan would like Boston’s 7.5 more than Philly or NY’s money: and that’s why he’s awesome. I might be missing an obvious EC team that needs to make the floor, and for some strange reason Doan’s agent thought he could “do better” than that. But really, I think (more or less) I’ve covered the bidding war to this point. The “Pitt” angle: well for sure, it was funny when they made room for Parise, and the darkest of Darkhorses won….maybe that’ll make them giants at the trade deadline. Maybe..Until then……………………………………………………….

I’m surprised no one has thrown the Senators into the speculation. They have the cap space and Alfredsson still hasn’t stated his intentions for next season. If he were to retire Doan would be a great guy in put into their lineup. He would be another older, more experienced player with proven leadership qualities which could help fill the void should Alfie retire.
I don’t see Brian Murray making that kind of an offer, but the Senators did surprisingly well last season. Maybe they’re willing to throw some money out there to go a little farther in the playoffs.
That is crazy stupid money for ANY team to offer to Doan though.

Sounds like Buffalo…Regeir needs to make one more move and who else would throw crazy money around like that. Would Doan like playing on the third line at the start with Ott and Grigorenko? Is there a trade in the works for Stasny and one of our RW’s is going? Maybe just wishful thinking on my part.

Actually you have to divide the money by the years when it comes to cap space. Doesn’t matter if it’s front loaded or not. 4 years x $30 mill would be a $7.5 mill cap hit.

Timmy Thomas says he is not going to play a single second in goal for the Bruins this season but his $5mil cap hit has them up against the cap tighter than any NHL. The CBA might change, but you have to look out for those 35+ contracts as much as anything these days.

Trying to sign a 35+guy to a 4 yr/$30mil deal after he has averaged 55 points over the last three seasons seems like a WAY worse move than locking up two top drawer players who inexplicably hit free agency at the same time, if you ask me.
