It’s funny how something as “childish and harmless” as biting someone’s fingers can get such a reaction, while smashing someone’s head into a dasher post the way Chara did, is considered to be just a “part of the game” ? I’m reminded of that adage that the biggest talkers are usually the biggest wimps. Big Bad Bruins my ass ! If they’re the “tough guys” they claim to be, then the Burrows thing should have remained as nothing more than the “comical” moment it was. Instead, the Bruins used something which your puppy dog does to you on a daily basis, as some sort of a battle cry. Don’t get me wrong … I loved what the Bruins did last year to the Canucks, as their victory “greatly” furthered the cause for getting rid of Luongo here. But please stop with the “tween-like” complaints about finger biting !

People often make this mistake with Lucic throwing him into the Enforcer weight class when it comes to fighting. That is not who he is, he is a 1st line (not in my opinion thats just where he lines up) power forward wing that plays a physical style who is expected to play with grit and some ugliness. Laraque’s of the world whose only job is to fight and average around 6minutes a game are not the guys Lucic needs to be accepting challenges from it would be stupid to make that trade off. That said if Laraque or someone of that calibur suits up for Buffalo and challenges him after the Miller incident then yes I believe Lucic accepts and goes with him, but not in a random scuffle after the whistle. Thornton is the Bruins tough guy enforcer not Lucic and that’s why Thornton will answer the bell against anyone and Lucic doesn’t have to. That’s why Lucic doesn’t need to face off against Scott next season it would be stupid for him and the Bruins to make that trade off when Thornton can step up and do what he is paid to do.

Normally I wouldn’t enter this fray but give me a break on Lucic…after the game of the Miller hit Boston came right out and said they knew they had no one to answer to on the Buffalo bench, (because Darcy is behind the times) the opportunity was there and they took it. Lucic is a good hockey player but not one that is looked at with respect outside of Boston. He is a wanna-be tough guy who built his rep on weak opponents…he quit vs Orr, he quit vs Vandermeer because he was getting hit in his big beak. When Laraque face washed him he turned away…and what do Boston fans use as an excuse ‘he was told not to fight’ but now if that is Kaleta or Gustad then it is ok to fight…lol what a joke of a tough guy. I will guarantee you this, with John Scott on the roster Lucic will not pull that $hit and I will bet you Scott challenges Lucic this year and Thornton will have to do his dirty work for him.
Let me further explain, I have no problem with Bostons style of play in terms of intimidation…I prefer that style but don’t make them out to be clean. Defend Boychuk’s axing of Vanek’s ankle in the play-offs.
Chara is another guy who is tough mattering who his opponent is, he dropped them with Laraque and proceded to tackle him instead of going toe to toe….twice by the way.
Thornton is an honest hockey player, takes on all plus he can play some hockey.
Since I’m a Buffalo fan I will say Kaleta belongs with Marchand, rats to the core. When Kaleta headbutted someone last year I was really hoping his act had gone stale here and he would not be resigned, to this point he was tendered an offer but is yet resigned.

The Bruins are not angels.

I would argue it is a representation of the fact that the Bruin’s play a physical style and that is the price they pay. We all know (most of us) that if being physical is part of your game, it is pretty tough to know exactly when to hit someone or let up and not hit them. You can’t easily make that decision in a split second. So that stuff happens. The Canucks aren’t suspended that much because they aren’t as aggressively physical. Also, I haven’t seen one suspension the league has handed out that a major contingent of fans hasn’t disagreed with. So, yes in the leagues eyes, the Bruins are worthy of more suspensions but why use that as a metric when everyone disagrees on what is suspension-worthy. I think the jury is still out on how the league is doing with all that…pretty tough job though.

Since the focus is on current teams, it seems as though suspensions and fines are useful metrics that can help determine how “dirty” a team is, at least in the eyes of the league. (It’s not the only way, of course, and I agree with Elvis that every team has its share of offenders.)

So, keeping it “current,” in 2011-12, regular season and playoffs, the league handed out a combined nine games worth of suspensions to three Bruins (Lucic, Marchand, Ference) and fined two Bruins $2,500 each. The league handed out two (playoff) games worth of suspensions to one Canuck (Bitz) and no fines.

Does it means the Bruins are a dirtier team than the Canucks? Not necessarily. But does it make it absurd to imply that the Bruins play an honorable brand of hockey in comparison to other teams in the league? Absolutely.

I’d argue they’re more involved after the whistle and with intimidation than the Canucks, but the Canucks were on average bigger players and the hit leaders that year in the playoffs – they even out hit the Bruins in the SCF. There are different definitions of physical and it depends on which one you look at, even if they do play a more skilled game.

There are plenty of examples for the Bruins of diving, embellishing and instigating (with walking away or having someone big stand in for you when you have to answer), and other teams have them as well, it’s just an argument that the two fan bases are going to repeat since there will always be some fan who thinks his team has done no wrong.

it is a circular argument when trying to compare specific incidents on the ice. However, the point is the Bruins and Canucks are polar opposites when it comes to style of play. Look at it from a birds eye view, so to speak, vs trying to come up with examples why each team is ‘dirty’. It is fairly well known the Bs, and some of the better teams in the east, play a more physical, in your face style. That goes hand in hand with being accountable and not making it a habit of diving, embellishing, or instigating and then walking away. The Canucks are talented and can be physical but their style is not built on physical play. It is more about finesse and talent. For some reason, maybe to compensate for lack of physicality, they try to draw penalties by diving and embellishing. That is the goal of such behavior. It looks terrible though and obviously people are going to respect someone, or a team in this case, that is accountable and not always trying to goad other teams without backing it up.

Of the three the umberger/Doughty one is the only one that could be interpreted as intentional – Chara wasn’t even looking. Pacioretty catches hit shoulder like Ennis and NOBODY even notices the hit. MTL and their fans are a joke. Call the cops!!!

Remember when so much was made of Weise not fighting Thornton off the face off that one game? Then the Vancouver reporter went on the talk show and defended Weise? Thornton lied about how he thought Weise wanted to fight him – he knew Weise and McQuaid were the ones wanting to go. He also lied when he said he’d fought multiple times in a period when the reporter (who I dislike, but regardless) mentioned Weise had just fought and Thornton had never been expected to fight right after in his career.

This is a circular argument; all teams are guilty of many of the things being claimed against others. Call it ducking or diving or biting or whatever, but Boston’s done it. So has Vancouver, so has 28 other teams.

This is the first time I’d heard any player speak against the current management, but there are plenty that laud them with praise, so it may just be his experience.
