I think Winnipeg has inquired about his services. He could replace some of the grit lost with the departure of Glass, with obvious addition of some much needed offense. I still think he’ll head to greener pastures i.e. Chicago or Vancouver.

Doan doesn’t have the injury history at 35 that Salo had much younger than that. It’s a point in his favour, and a multi-year deal can certainly be worked to have an affordable base salary with relatively easy targets for bonuses in case he does decide to retire in a year or two’s time.

I wouldn’t give him 5 years, but if the structure can be worked out, I’d easily give him 2-3 years.

The only thing I see in Vancouver that would hold us back from persuing it is we finally have some big, young prospects that are talented enough to step into the lineup in the next few years. Kassian has already played at the NHL level (but could development more still), Jensen was very comfortable in the AHL for his brief callup last year, and we have Gaunce, LaBate and Mallett that will be ready soon for NHL duty (although they’re centers) – all have NHL-size and are ready to compete.

A stop gap for a couple of years is not a problem when you’re talking about Doan, though, even if he did go a little far with some suspensions last year. It’s a sign he may be a step slower which is resulting in some bad decisions, but he can still play for sure.

It’s the off-season of player wives returning to their home. Will Doan follow the trend, or will he put his foot down, gator style? Somewhere in this interesting off-season is the next greatest Will Arnett parody of the NHL.

In all seriousness though, Doan may be the missing ingredient for a team that lacks toughness, identity, and character when it matters most. Good luck getting him with “the whole league” interested.
