Newark mayor Booker under fire for “fighting an expensive personal vendetta” with Devils

From The Star-Ledger:

Assembly budget officer Declan O’Scanlon (R-Monmouth) is calling Newark Mayor Cory Booker to task over what he deems fiscal mismanagement in the face of millions in state aid.

Citing a series of articles in The Star-Ledger regarding failed deals with the New Jersey Devils, O’Scanlon questioned the wisdom of awarding Newark an additional $24 million in state aid for this year’s budget.

“It appears Mayor Booker has walked away from several deals with the Devils over the last few years,” said O’Scanlon in a statement. “Everything from contractual assumption of risk to a parking agreement has led to discord and litigation. Now, Newark is on the hook to the Devils for $600,000 owed immediately and at least $3.7 million in legal fees to their lawyers. The bills keep piling up.”

The war of words between Booker and the Devils really heated up in April when the mayor called the club’s owner, Jeff Vanderbeek, a “highfalutin, high-class huckster and hustler” after an arbitration ruling called for the city to pay the club $2.7 million a year in parking revenue.

Now it’s Booker coming under attack, with O’Scanlon accusing the mayor of “fighting an expensive personal vendetta with one hand while he has the other hand out expecting state aid.”

The state is threatening to withhold $24 million in aid if the city doesn’t introduce a budget by July 19, and O’Scanlon says he “can not, in good conscience, imagine handing Newark another $24 million when the mayor is continuing to rack up legal fees and costs for litigation that could have been settled months ago.”

A “highfalutin, high-class huckster and hustler”? Those are fighting words!

Make some money for Newark and NJ Devils. Let those two fight it out in a cage, MMA-style. I imagine there are people who pay to watch these clowns slap-fight each other.

They actually had two politicians box here in Canada. They even set up PPV for those two goofballs and it definitely was NOT Pacquiao-Mayweather. But it did raise money for charity. Might be fun.

Hockey teams do not belong in places where there is not enough money to support the team. I like the devils, they just got screwed by playing out of new York for so long, most of new jersey are flyers fans… The other half is rangers fans… Hope they can stand tall, and stay in nj.

Ha, good for O’Scanlon. Booker is an idiot similar to the idiots at the Goldwater Institute in Glendale. Just another in a long list of people who disregard public-interests just to make some useless noise.

Booker is almost like a player, who after signing an eight-year contract, decides to hold out unless he gets traded one year into the contract.

I agree with the latter half of your statement. But, i feel compelled to add Paul Holmgren to that list. Hes doing the opposite of a player asking for more money or to be traded… hand out an absurd contract then, realizing the mistake trade the player a year later. As for Booker. Dude you lost your case to an impartial arbitrator…now youre going to whine about how you lost and how its not fair. And you cant even submit a budget. Im pretty sure a drunk monkey could be more of a man than you. Who the hell voted for thiss assclown?

Someone tell the mayor of Newark that slang has been updated since the 1940’s.
