The other factor is Raymond is good friends with Garrison, who signed with the Canucks in part from the discussions they had. It wouldn't look good to sign Garrison then dump Raymond right after, so I'd bet he starts the season with the team and they give him a shot to see if he can return to form.

He can be effective if he's putting up over 40 points a year, since he does well on the PK and has speed. If he's not producing at that rate, for long stretches or goes missing in the playoffs like he has previously, then he doesn't bring enough elsewhere to be effective as a bottom 6 player.

Ya no I hear ya, there no reason to let him walk when at the very least you can toss him into a package deal... and if he does happen to score 30 goals then ya got ya self a hell of a deal.

Ya gotta admit tho, ya he was horribily injured, but I haven't seen anyone get the ice time (PP in particular) or be thought of as a 30 goal scorer without ever actually earning the reputation. I like Raymond but ...just saying.

The reward outweighs the risk on this deal.

Raymond is a 26-year old with great speed who is coming off of a shortened season following a devastating injury the left him in a back brace. Taking a small pay cut to remain with the team that drafted and developed him, on a one-year contract, so he can try to return to form seems like the most logical idea to me.

The Canucks can either keep him or deal him at some point in the season, but whichever path they go down, they'll be hoping that Raymond regains his form and more importantly, his value as an asset. Right now he is still labelled as damaged goods.

Well, the alternative is letting him walk away as an unrestricted free agent. Might as well get him under contract, unless you think it would be impossible to trade him. (I don't.)

Raymond is either the nicest human being alive ...or has blackmail pictures of Canucks brass.

Not saying I don't wish the best for him but I just don't understand where the undying loyalty this organization has for him comes from.
