NCAA will bring hockey to Chicago’s Soldier Field

Beyond being a great annual event, the Winter Classic’s popularity is inspiring plenty of other, smaller outdoor events. Next season will provide some other examples, but perhaps the most interesting off-shoot will take place at Soldier Field in Chicago. Brian Hamilton reports that there will be two NCAA games at the venue where the NFL’s Chicago Bears play.

Hamilton reports that Notre Dame will face Miami of Ohio and Wisconsin shall take on Minnesota in two high-profile matches. Update: Nathan Wells reports that it will be called “The Hockey City Classic” and that the two games will form a doubleheader on Feb. 17, 2013.

More information is expected to be available on Wednesday, but either way, it sounds exciting. This also makes me ask: where else would you really like to see an outdoor game?

    How is this hockey news?

    • crosberries - Jul 9, 2012 at 11:32 PM

It’s possible it might be hockey news because if possible they will be putting ice over the football feild. Possibly the whole hundred yards and use the feild goal post as nets. Possibly but I’m not a hundred percent sure. Possibly.

Lol my thoughts exactly. I am excited to hear about these outdoor games though.

Minnesota/Wisconsin will be a heck of a game. It’s a rivalary that is in Minnesota’s eyes at least isn’t THE RIVAL. But it’s a rival. And with both teams joining the Big 10 conference after next season, it’s gonna be THE RIVAL.

Why isn’t the Min/Wis game being played at TCF Bank or Target Field? Seems as it would be closer for both teams/fans to travel to.

  5. ndnut - Jul 10, 2012 at 12:27 AM

Hockey at Notre Dame Stadium, Target Field, Metrodome, and Yankee Stadium if it’s Rangers/Islanders.

    • cweez2 - Jul 10, 2012 at 9:54 AM

Target Field or TCF Stadium in Minneapolis for sure.

We’ve got a USHL (Lincoln/Omaha) + NCAA (UN-O vs. N. Dakota) double header in Omaha’s TD Ameritrade Park coming in February to my neck of the woods. Looking forward to it.

Wonder if the park district will do as great a job with the ice as they do with the grass! LOL

    • comeonnowguys - Jul 10, 2012 at 9:18 AM

They’re not going to ice over the field. They’re going to wash off the green paint and put a coat of white paint on.

  7. zaksyuk - Jul 10, 2012 at 6:24 AM

That’s how you get my fellow Americans to love the game. Take it back to its roots where traditionally its played on baseball and football fields ! I’m just kiddin i love it tho lol :)

When will this nonsense end? I would never go to an outside hockey game. It will be freezing cold and spectators will be so far from the ice they will need binoculars.

Who thinks these things are good ideas??

    • habsman - Jul 10, 2012 at 6:45 AM

Well 113,000 fans think it’s a good idea. That’s the expected attendance at the winter classic in Michigan on Jan 01, 2013.

      • bcjim - Jul 10, 2012 at 8:47 AM

If its such a great idea, how come no team plays outside regularly? Oh right, because after a game or 2, *nobody* would come.

    • greatminnesotasportsmind - Jul 10, 2012 at 9:05 AM

Most kids play hockey outside. Hockey is played outside… In winter. Of course it’s gonna be cold. If you want 85 and sunny, watch a 7 hour Yankee/Red Sox game

    @bcjim
Are you serious? It’s a once a year event. Of course no one would want to go to 20 outdoor hockey games a year. But when your team gets chosen to play in the WC I am pretty sure it’s fun to go and be a part of it.
