List: 10 remaining UFAs that aren’t named Ryan or Zach

As we wait for the two biggest free agents, Ryan Suter and Zach Parise, to make up their minds, here are 10 UFAs that have yet to sign.

Jaromir Jagr – Apparently the Habs don’t want him. But the Dallas Stars? Could happen.

Alexander Semin – Plan C for teams that don’t get Parise or Nash? A media darling!

Matt Carle – Plan B for teams that don’t get Suter? Wants to stay in Philly, but could feasibly get himself a bigger deal on the open market.

Kyle Wellwood – Coming off a career-high 47 points in Winnipeg, the nifty 29-year-old center is small but knows how to make plays.

Steve Sullivan – Similar in stature to Wellwood, except a winger and older. Had 17 goals last season in Pittsburgh. Also has seven 20-goal seasons under his belt, though his last was in 2006-07.

Petr Sykora – Scored 21 times for the Devils in 2011-12. It’s believed the 35-year-old wants to stay in New Jersey, but he’s likely in a holding pattern until Parise signs.

Shane Doan – Reportedly waiting until July 9 to see if the Coyotes’ lease agreement with Greg Jamison will be heading to a November referendum.

Andrei Kostitsyn – Anyone want a 20-goal scorer that enjoys late Scottsdale nights? A KHL team might.

Scott Hannan – Veteran defenseman that helped the Flames to the No. 9 penalty kill last season. If he were a car, he wouldn’t be much to look at, but he’d get you from A to B.

Wow, I didn’t know McGuire and Crawford would sink to the level of PHT trolls re: Semin. I’d take Semin pretty friggin quickly, and particularly while he’s under the radar. Quick, Chevy, to the phone!

While Semin’s numbers may be good, his agent also failed to mention the fact that Semin cannot (and will not) play any defense, he draws numerous wuss penalties (slash, trip, etc.) and tends to draw them at terrible times. Semin is a part time player. He’s always had offensive strength around him in Ovechkin and Backstrom, even Laich and Chimmy, which helped him put up pts, where ZP hasn’t had much to work with over the years. I’m not saying he’s a 3rd line guy by any means, but I’d say he’s a top liner ONLY when he feels like it.

Semin is essentially Radulov with a little more skill. Lazy. Entitled. Arrogant.

Not to come off snotty but he must have felt like playing quite a bit so far. Yeah, he’s fallen off a bit but so has the rest of the team. If he came to Winnipeg, he’d end up playing with some combination of Wheeler, Little, Jokinen, Kane, or Ladd. I mean, a Kane-Jokinen-Semin line would be pretty sick. I haven’t seen much of him to be honest but I think he’d fit in well in Winnipeg.

Which means the Rangers will probably sign him. 😉

      • rockthered1286 - Jul 3, 2012 at 2:05 PM

I’m not saying he’s bad at all. I’m simply saying despite his numbers, he’s nowhere near as valuable as ZP would be to a team. He was expected to be a 1B behind Ovechkin (similar to a Crosby-Malkin scenario), and instead has highly streaky and inconsistent play, chock full of stupid penalties and zero ability to back check. Let me put it this way- there’s a reason the Caps have signed him to consecutive 1 year contracts leading up to this year, and a reason that despite being on the trading block for the past 2 years, the Caps never got any viable offers.

@rockthered, fair enough. Still, once Parise is snatched up, Semin will be soon after. My guess is he’s had offers, but he’s waiting to see what Parise fetches.

Btw I’m not the only one who thinks the Jets should go for Semin.

      • rockthered1286 - Jul 3, 2012 at 3:14 PM

No doubt he would be an upgrade for the Jets. And I wish him (sort of) the best of luck. But if he does join your team? Be prepared for frustration. He’s had some big games, but I tend to remember the 1-1 games with 5 mins in the 3rd pd when he slashes someone across the hands, resulting in a PP goal and a loss. Or the time he thought he could fight against the Rangers and literally, and I’m not joking, engaged in heavy duty slapping. Those things drive me crazy.

But I guess take it with a grain of salt if he can bring a 30 goal, 30 assist campaign along with him!

Welly’s sittin’ on the dock at the cottage. He’s got his fingers crossed he doesn’t have to pack up and move his futon again. That thing’s super heavy! LOL. (sigh)

Wellwood will be a flyer, just waiting on zach and ryan to answer

  4. andyreidisfat - Jul 3, 2012 at 2:09 PM

Is it me or is Matt Carle the most over rated player in the history of the NHL. I say that as a Flyers fan who wants him back, but for like 2.5 mill not the 5-5.5 he is going to get.

    • lostpuppysyndrome - Jul 3, 2012 at 2:19 PM

Most overrated? No. That illustrious title is claimed now and for all time by a certain Mr. Alexander Daigle. Currently overrated? That’s arguable.

      • obamablowz - Jul 4, 2012 at 12:49 AM

As a Flyers fan you could look at your goalie as being more overrated than Carle….or you could go a few years back and go Renberg, Falloon, Gratton, Richardson, and last but not least Lindros (who I loved as a player). Just a few that I would be considered more overrated than Carle.

  5. polegojim - Jul 3, 2012 at 2:23 PM

I’d take Alex and Shane in a second.

    • homelanddefense - Jul 3, 2012 at 2:28 PM

Doan no doubt, in a heartbeat.

      • polegojim - Jul 3, 2012 at 3:25 PM

I’d like to land Suter and/or Parise…. but there are lots more ways to put together a Stanley Cup Winner.

  6. mclovinhockey - Jul 3, 2012 at 2:57 PM

Wellwood better end up in Philly. Not just cause his brother is there, but the flyers NEED D!! Rather than overpaying for a D we can just sign defensive forwards like him and Doan (if possible) and that would drop our GAA a good deal.

I’d take semin as well but what PM and Crawford said about him is true, he is a dick but I’d have him for cheap… Plus that guy can fight ; ) hahahahahahahahahaha sorry that last part was a joke

    • rockthered1286 - Jul 3, 2012 at 3:34 PM

This fight says it all. How could it get any worse? He got fined the next day for no fighting straps. In all fairness, he wasn’t actually ‘fighting.’ I’ve seen more agressive pillow fighting on Cinemax.
