Detroit will try and find a new home for Joey MacDonald

Now that the Detroit Red Wings have “The Monster” in place as Jimmy Howard‘s backup, Joey MacDonald is hoping to get a chance to do the same elsewhere.

Ansar Khan of Mlive.com reports the Red Wings and GM Ken Holland are hoping to move MacDonald to another team to accommodate his wishes to stay out of the AHL.

“His agent called, he wanted to know what the plan was with Joey,” Holland told MLive.com. “He doesn’t want to be in the AHL. Certainly, if we can find Joey an opportunity in the NHL we’ll do it.”

Finding him a landing place in the NHL will be hard. There weren’t many goaltending jobs to be had in the first place, and now that teams in need have made their moves it’ll be hard for MacDonald. One team that stands out as one in need is Winnipeg.

The Jets lost Jonas Gustavsson to Detroit and Chris Mason to Nashville. Someone needs to back up Ondrej Pavelec and the Jets don’t have anyone with NHL experience ready to do it. Makes sense, doesn’t it?

I certain hope he gets a shot. When he was healthy last year he played better than jimmy Howard. He is a class guy and would make a great backup anywhere. Also shows once again the amazing class of the Red Wings organization. It is a family environment there and it shows in how they operate.

There are PLENTY of teams for whom Joey would be a MAJOR upgrade, and as a starter at that.

Detroit will be looking for a 2 or 3 line D-man for him.

    Best wishes Joey!

Thanks for carrying the team for stretches last year, Joey. Best of luck to you!

If he’s so great, why did Detroit replace him with Gustavsson? I ask this in all seriousness.

Gustavsson is a beast in size and has potential to be a stud. Joey Mac was never going to replace Jimmy. That doesn’t mean he wasn’t any good. It is what it is. I think people are saying he was great at times last year, that doesn’t mean that they are saying he is truly a great goalie. Whatever.

Macdonald played great for a hot team for a few games, but he’s played for the Wings in the past and was only average. He may have been a serviceable backup for the wings for a few years, but they saw a better player in Gustavsson and got him.

Seriously? Who thumbs down on a question?

Blackhawks maybe??? (I couldn’t even type that with a straight face) He would be a big and much needed improvement for my Hawks.

I do not see Joey being moved during training camp or before that.

I think Joey will make a good backup somewhere. Don’t think he’s No. 1 goalie material, but he showed last year he can carry a team. Hope he finds a good place and hopefully the Wings get something decent in return.

Wings will regret this move Gustavsson is a stiff. McDonald was big for them last year. I would ask for a trade too if I was passed over like this

I hate to see Joey Mac go. He really played well for us.
