The Capitals are still working out new deals for Mike Green and John Carlson, but they’re making sure they’ve got plenty of depth.

The Caps announced the signing of former Islanders and Predators defenseman Jack Hillen to a one-year deal. Mike Vogel of the Caps’ website says the deal is worth $650,00.

Hillen played in 55 games last season for the Predators scoring two goals and adding four assists. He’ll slot in as a nice sixth or seventh defenseman for Washington and doing battle with the likes of Jeff Schultz, Dmitry Orlov, and John Erskine for playing time. Hillen can move the puck and has an OK shot from the point. At the very least, he provides the Caps with a solid option to go with if other guys struggle.
