Brodeur says he never wanted to leave Devils: “All I know is New Jersey”

Turns out what many pegged as a bluff...really was a bluff.

That’s the word out of New Jersey today after Martin Brodeur agreed to a two-year, $9 million deal with the Devils.

Brodeur, who hired agent Pat Brisson to wade free agent waters after negotiations with the Devils went south, says he never really intended on leaving the place he’s called home for 20 NHL seasons.

“All I know is New Jersey,” Brodeur told the New York Post. “All my friends are in New Jersey. It was hard that people though I wanted to leave. I didn’t want to do that.”

After signing the deal, Brodeur admitted he hired Brisson largely to squeeze a two-year deal out of the Devils, rather than the one-year they were offering. By getting the Brisson to field offers from around the league, Brodeur put pressure on New Jersey GM Lou Lamoriello to tack on the extra year.

More, from The Post:

“A one year deal, I didn’t think was good for me,” Brodeur said. “In the back of my mind, New Jersey was the No. 1 choice, by far, but I talked to two teams, and it was interesting.

“Lou [Lamoriello] made every effort to keep me in New Jersey, tweaking it at our request in different areas on his one-year [offer]. But the big thing to me was the uncertainty of the possible lockout,” Brodeur said.

After receiving two-year offers elsewhere, the Devils made their two-year bid and Brodeur said he agreed late Sunday.

Other notes

While unofficial, sounds like Johan Hedberg has found work for next season. The catch? Nobody knows where. The Post reports Hedberg’s “agreed to a free agent deal, although it is uncertain with whom he is signing.” (UPDATE: It’s the Devils.)

— Brodeur said he spoke with Zach Parise about the possibility of re-signing in New Jersey. Marty’s take? “I think the Devils are still really high on his list.”

Reports are that Moose signed to stay with the Devils as well, so both goalies are back. Marty 2 yr/$9m, Moose 2 yr/$2.8m – both have full no trade (actually Marty’s might be no movement). Per various reports on yahoo’s puck daddy twitter feed.

Marty indicated he’ll finish the contract.

We got 2 years to actually really finally plan for the goalie position now :)

To think, arguably the best goalie in NHL history will never get a chance to play for a team that has a good fan base. I like him, heck I like NJ but what I said was true

Marty clearly disagrees with you, mclovin.

Haha I am sure he feels that NJ has the best fans in the world, just like LA players said last year…. However the top 4 fan bases in the NHL over the past decade has without a doubt been Toronto, Montreal, Philadelphia and Detroit…

And you base this statement on… on what?

      • michiganhockey11 - Jul 2, 2012 at 2:22 PM

Actually knowing the game of hockey. Teams’ fan bases you can automatically rule out over past decade as not the top 5 hockey fan bases-

        -Blue Jackets
        -San Jose
-Los Angeles (yes, they may have made great strides, but for sports, it will forever be a Lakers town)
-New York (both teams, as New York is either baseball or football, maybe the Knicks)
        -Pittsburgh (Steelers town)
-Calgary (let’s face it, bullriding draws more of a crowd on regualr basis)
-Chicago (Baseball and Football are the draw there)
-Nashville (don’t kid yourselves down there)
        -Washington (Redskins draws better)

        Did I miss any others?

That only leaves Detroit, Philly, Toronto, Montreal and Boston for the top 5

michiganhockey11, how did you come up with this list? Do you a
have any experience being in each NHL citiy to do your determination of the top 5 hockey fan bases? There’s nothing scientific to your argument, just your opinion. Opinion’s are like a$$holes, everyone’s got one.

      • michiganhockey11 - Jul 3, 2012 at 8:57 AM

You are seriously going to tell me with a straight face that for the past decade teams like the Kings, Panthers, Predators, and Phoenix have the top 4 fan bases in the NHL? Balderdash.

People might have been calling a bluff but it worked, now come to think of it he was orchestrating this from every interview he had during the finals regarding this topic. Would love what kind of a poker face marty can throw down
