Shane Doan will wait ’til July 9 to make his free agent decision

Shane Doan will be testing out the free agent market. Sort of. TSN’s Darren Dreger says Doan will be waiting until July 9 to make a decision on whether or not he’ll leave the Phoenix Coyotes to sign elsewhere.

If that sounds like an odd date to pick out, it would be in a vacuum. In reality, however, that’s the date when we’ll know if prospective Coyotes buyer Greg Jamison will see his bid to land the team slowed down thanks to a Glendale petition.

It’s no secret Doan loves playing in Phoenix and would like to finish his career there. That said, if there’s the possibility Jamison’s group could be delayed or scared off thanks to legal wranglings, Doan has made it known he doesn’t want to go through that whole dance again.

I’m not a Coyotes fan by any stretch, but I hope he stays there (if not, come play for the Caps, please!). He’s been a hero for that franchise (just like Blake Wheeler? Justin Schultz in Anaheim?) and I can definitely appreciate a guy like that.

That group in Glendale is full of complete idiots. They think their economy is in the tank now and can’t afford to let “some rich guy” take advantage of tax incentives, but I can’t wait until they realize in two years they have a cripplingly expensive building to maintain with no tenant and no prospect for a future tenant. The area around the building will lose huge amounts of game day revenues, property values in that area will decrease exponentially (from already record lows), and they’ll still be making their 50-year mortgage payments on a building to sit empty 325 days a year, waiting for Nickleback to come through for their annual crapfest.

Good luck, Glendale. Keep protesting this deal. Lose Doan, then your team, then your economy.

How is a guy who never played a game in the NHL or AHL a hero for the ducks???

mclovinhockey, seriously? Can you not sense the tone (SARCASM) when rsl22 speaks about Blake Wheeler and Justin Schultz?
