Goalie Jonas Gustavsson has signed a two-year, $3 million contract with the Detroit Red Wings. The Monster goes from Toronto (via Winnipeg) to serve as Jimmy Howard‘s backup.

Gustavsson, 27, struggled with the Maple Leafs last season, posting a 17-17-4 record with a .902 save percentage. (Though to be fair, the guys in front of him didn’t make it easy.)

In Detroit, he’ll join fellow Swedes Henrik Zetterberg, Johan Franzen, Niklas Kronwall, Jonathan Ericsson, Gustav Nyquist and maybe Tomas Holmstrom.

This is a good opportunity for Gustavsson to prove himself. And if he does, then Detroit will finally have a solid back up G again.

He’s got the skills to be a real solid backup. Playing on a team with some good D will be a good change for him.

      Whoa there…
      1) Howard is ‘THE’ man, no question
      2) I like Gustavsson for the same reasons you both do….
      3) But…. how can you discount what Joey did during ‘the streak’? That’s about as solid as a goalie can get. He was playing better than Jimmy did upon his return! He’ll probably be the starter wherever he goes.

He was brought in to push Howard moreso than to be a backup. I like him.

IMO being out of that pressure cooker and having fellow swedes to play with might help him alot ! Good pick up didnt see it coming.

And if Gus finds his game again and Jmac stays healthy and strong great trade option down the road at the deadline before a playoff run

I like this move a lot. Gustavsson is a good solid goalie and in Detroit, with the player support system they have and the higher caliber of players that will be around him, I think he can grow a considerable amount. Maybe even into a solid starter for another team after his deal is done.
