I take that back: it looks like the Ducks won’t automatically get compensation. And, if this loophole is allowed in the next CBA this has to change. After seeing how Schultz has become an overnight sensation by using these rules to his advantage, it’s bound to happen again. What’s to stop another guy from stringing along the team that drafted him? At least when Lindros was drafted he was upfront about not wanting to go to Quebec and gave Que/Col a chance to work out a trade.

Has he actually said anything like this? It’s quite possible a team will offer him this and he will take it but there’s a big difference between teams offering him something and him actually demanding it. If he’s actually demanding to be given a guaranteed spot then that’s pretty lame. Obviously though he has no control over what incentives teams choose to offer him.

Honestly, if people think he should have signed with Anaheim, fine. Beyond that though I don’t see what you can blame him for. He’s a highly talented (and virtually risk free) prospect that would be a great addition to any team. Obviously then teams are gonna go to all kinds of lengths to convince him to sign. That’s not his fault though. Nor is it his fault that this has turned into such a media circus.

Ducks suck. Ever since they won the cup, I have only heard trade rumors involving Getzlaf, Ryan, Perry or Hiller. Never did management step up and officially squash it, those BS rumors have lingered for awhile now. Like I said…. Ducks suck. Good luck to Schultz, he doesn’t deserve all the hate. Ducks had 4 years to sign or move his rights and did not…… Suddenly we should feel bad for the Ducks because they didn’t? Comparing him to Lebron is a joke, because he is not a 2 time league MVP for a specific team, who also lead that specific team to a championship final. Justin Schultz didnt have the massive media campaign behind him like a real super star such as LBJ does. I get where you are coming from, but cmon!!!! Justin Schultz is no where comparable to Lebron. Lebron rode us out for a week. Justin Schultz hasnt even truly hit day 1 of free agency and he is still expected to announce it early (tomorrow). Haters will hate, but Schultz is no where as bad as dumb fans are making him out to be. Let my thumbs down reign in.

I don’t mean to be a hater but I must say this a lebron James moment. I love lbj hes one if the best basketball players. When lbj did it he was scrutinized. Lbj actually had a name for himself Jeff Shultz doesn’t even have a game let alone a second of NHL experience

We also told him since we were playing him now it would move him one year closer to making millions of dollars. The kid seemed really excited and it seemed like a done deal when all of a sudden something dramatically changed. Someone got to the kid, it seems. I don’t know exactly what happened but there’s something fishy in Denmark.”

As recently as the end of this last regular season Schultz seemed to be leading the Ducks into believing he would sign with them. The article also features a quote from Getzlaf mentioning the fact that many players around the league had a problem with how he handled this situation. The kid just sounds like a headache waiting to happen.

As crappy as the compensation is in these situations, it would still most likely be better than trading a player’s rights after they have decided to use this loophole. At that point, everybody knows he’s going to be a UFA and is free to begin the circus that Schultz and his camp created. Plus, what do you do if the kid tells you for a few years that he’s going to sign and doesn’t follow through? I just have not seen a single person on any site or board explain how Schultz comes out of this looking respectable or trustworthy.

Your right to a point. Yeah, I would be pissed if someone did this to the Wild. However, I would hope that Fletcher would trade that player’s rights if it ever got to close to the deadline. As i mentioned in a previous post, I would rather trade him and get something for him, the minute I had a doubt he wasn’t going to sign.

A number of articles I’ve read say that Schultz spent most of that time assuring Anaheim that he was going to sign. After some solid seasons at Wisc he knew he could use this loophole to go where he wanted to and decided to jet. If a player did this to the Wild there is no way you come down on this side of the argument. Particularly with the compensation for losing these players being what it is. Wheeler did this as the 5th overall pick in the draft and Phoenix got a second round pick as compensation.

I think the what bugs most “haters” including myself is the alleged demand to have guaranteed roster spot and playing time. If you are that good you don’t need the guarantee! Period. Earn it and people will respect you.

I didn’t like it when Wheeler did it and he didn’t create the sort of self serving circus around the decision that Schultz has. A player who have never played a single second in this league does not deserve to have it “up to him what team sells him the best on their program, opportunity, and situation”. I think this loophole needs to be tied up in the new CBA. And I’m a Wild fan, so there is supposedly a chance he could come here. How many times does he have to put his own interests above a team or franchise to prove he’s a selfish player with an inflated sense of self worth?

Anaheim also had 3 years to sign him. If I was Schultz, and Anaheim waited nearly 3 years to make an effort to sign me, it would show me, that they didn’t really want me in the first place. Then I became a highly touted prospect, and funny Anaheim now wants me. Why not show them the finger right back.

Everyone is hating because being drafted into the NHL is the biggest hockey honor and privilege that anyone who isn’t in the league can be given. You do not pick and choose opportunities like this, you thankfully take it no matter who it is that drafted you. Yes players have done this in the past (ie: Lindros, etc) and they too were heavily criticized. It gives off an arrogant and spoiled image.

According to Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune (he’s as plugged in as anybody in the NHL) has said that Minnesota is also on his short list. TSN’s Bob McKenzie also said the same thing last night in a tweet. Too bad nobody here mentioned that. Also according to Russo, the Wild DO have a face to face meeting set up with him. All the teams can offer the same contract, it’s just up to him what team sells him the best on their program, opportunity, and situation.

Why does everyone hate, Schultz for not signing with Anaheim? He’s not the first player to not sign with a team that drafted him. Blake Wheeler did the same thing not signing with Phoenix and then signing with Boston as a free agent.

First he blew off the team that drafted him. Then comes the “shortlist” to tease it for days. Now he’s trumping the league’s vets by announcing his decision a day before FA officially starts. Sorry, I just don’t like the way this guy has done business to this point and there is no sign that it will stop once he finally plays a game. Imagine the ego and demands that will come if he is actually a success.
