I've been a devils fan for about 25 years. Marty Broddeur has been an outstanding player and an unbelievable asset for their organization. At the end of the day as of right now he is not an elite goaltender. He is a lot slower than he use to be and he lets in far too many easy shots. To say that he is still worth a big contract is silly from a business perspective. If he asks for any more than a couple million then I would let him walk. I am not worried because I am sure that Lou will make the decision that is in the teams best interest.

"Testing UFA" and hiring an agent does not mean that he's looking for more money than New Jersey is willing to pay for him, or that he's specifically looking to move to another team. He stated that he would represent himself with regards to his agency status with the Devils, but he cannot realistically represent himself and market himself to other teams at the same time. The hiring of an agent is just so he can prepare for (and see if) there is a market for a number one goaltender if the Devils lock up Parise long-term and can't afford to pay Marty for another season. He can't realistically negotiate with all the teams interested in him once he declares his availability.

Marty is a number one goaltender but if we lock up Parise long term as well as our other pending UFAs that we need to get resigned he's not looking at very much money. While Marty has never been about money, it would be a considerable demotion from his current 5+ million contract. And he is more than likely only looking for a one year contract.

That means, if the Devils have a fair shot at signing Parise, Marty would likely only be looking to move to another team that has a significantly high chance of winning the cup in the 2012-13 season and has a need for a number one goaltender. I don't see any teams that fit that criteria. Toronto is a disaster and a joke of an organization right now, I don't see Brodeur signing there. Chicago... maybe. You can call them cup contenders but I don't see them as legitimate winners. Brodeur has previously stated that if he were to move anywhere, Montreal would be high on the list (home town hero), but unfortunately Montreal can't afford to sleight Carey Price for a season by making him the backup, and Marty won't sign anywhere to be a backup.

I really don't see him leaving New Jersey. I think he's either going to resign for one year or he's going to hang it up. I don't see any other teams that would benefit from his rental service that he'd be interested in moving to.

What roller coaster ride its been for devils fans. They went from 2 wins away from the cup to potentially losing 2 of their biggest stars (this era) to free agency. I'd be on suicide watch right now if I was a devils fan. If Parise or marty sign elsewhere in the Atlantic division coming from a pens fan let me just say " I'm sorry". That's alot to take.

This reminds me of when the Rangers traded Leetch in the twilight of his career. A lot of fan were really pissed that they didn't allow him to finish his career in NY. You know what though? Its all about business. These guys are professionals, and management has a responsibility to do whats in the best interest of the organization as a whole. If Brodeur wants more money then the team thinks hes worth, and money is really tight to begin with... can you really blame them for letting him walk?

After all, the Devils first priority is coming up with the money to re-sign Parise. Giving Brodeur the contract he likely wants (I'd guess $4-5 million range) could be the difference between keeping Parise, and not keeping him. If push comes to shouve, who would you rather the Devils keep... a 40 year old over the hill goalie, or a 27 year old top tier winner whos entering his prime? That should be a no brainer.
