The Colorado Avalanche has locked up one its restricted free agents, signing pugnacious forward Steve Downie to a two-year, $5.3 million deal.

According to TSN’s Bob McKenzie, Downie will earn $2.55 million in his first season and $2.75 million the next for a cap hit of $2.65 million.

Downie, 25, was traded from Tampa Bay to Colorado in February. He finished the season with 14 goals and 27 assists in 75 games.

GM Greg Sherman must now turn his attention to RFAs Erik Johnson and Ryan O’Reilly. The former is the Avalanche’s top defenseman, the latter its leading scorer.

sweet. loved steve downie after he came over at the trade deadline this year. he was one fire until he got hurt, so hopefully he can stay healthy this year!

This is good news. Downie was extremely effective until he got hurt against Pittsburgh leading to speculation of whether he was hurt, or simply not interested being on the Avs…clearly it isn’t the latter given the resigning, and he clearly hurt his shoulder which required surgery after the season – goes to show his character wanting to be out there trying to help even though he wasn’t able to do a lot. Looking forward to next season with a full year with Downie and McGinn (they need to get him, O’Reilly and Johnson signed).
