I’ve been one of Semin’s biggest critics over the years, and feel he is a main reason the Caps haven’t won the cup (that and goaltending). You can’t have a guy who scores 40 goals in the regular season completely vanish in the playoffs, and thats Semin’s MO.

With that said, I would be willing to bet there are a lot of teams interested in him. Even with his on and off lack of desire, hes still a top tier scorer who is capable of putting up big numbers. For a team thats in desperate need of scoring, or just some extra punch… hes a viable option in a year with a very thin market for big time scorers. Thats especially true since hes not likely to make anywhere close to the $7.5 he made last season.

This of course all depends on Semin, and if he actually wants to stay in the NHL.

Doan might fit that role, but he would never go to the Islanders. Hes 35 and probably wants to win a cup… not play for the worst team in the NHL that has zero chance to win a cup in the next 10 years.

In fact, no good player with a choice is likely to go to the Islanders for the forseeable future. As sad as it might be, the Islanders are a horrible hockey team that has no certainty for their future. They are the current armpit of the NHL that all players want to avoid. So stop fooling yourself into thinking there is a chance any of these good players will end up there…. because they won’t unless they have absolutely no other choice.

I don’t see a reason for a team to trade for a player’s rights this close to the start of free agency. It will be tough to get a deal done in the 3 days (if it happened tomorrow) and he would end up testing the market anyway.

That’s true…but each player would be good for different reasons. For example, Doan would make a great mentor for the young Islander forwards. Doug Weight was supposed to be that, but he didn’t have enough left in the tank. Semin’s skills might be enhanced playing with JT & Matt.

ugh.

5th round pick at the highest, 6th most likely…. I wouldn’t trade for them at all, Semin has proven he isn’t worthy of a top contact that someone would be willing to pay, let alone trade for his rights.

Semin has often been linked to Isles and it seems like Garth Snow is looking to make moves to improve the team. He might work well in PA Parenteau’s slot alongside JT & Moulson.
