Calling Ovie the worst local athlete is absurd. But, he is most definitely the most disappointing. With past achievements and current expectations taken into account, this past season was a disaster for him. I think that’s why he “won” this distinction.

Its “Washingtonian Magazine” and lots of people read it. At least the cover…while waiting to buy groceries.

You’re right though, not too many Caps fans are subscribers is my guess.

i’ve been to caps games since i moved here, there’s a big difference in the fans at the verizon center compared to the fans at the old US Air arena. most of the idiots at caps games these days dont even know what icing is. the caps were terrible back then but at least the fans knew what was going on. i cant even take my kids there to see the pens when they come to town anymore because of the embarassing morons that show up with their profane signs and t-shirts…they know they hate the penguins but dont even know the rules of the game. pretty funny but sad at the same time, living in NOVA i see and hear morons like elliot in the morning spew off nonsense all the time. there are very few people in dc who can name any of the caps hall of famers, or even know who the coach was before bruce boudreau.

Ovie may have had a minus number while on the ice against the Bruins but his hitting every time he was on the ice had an impact. True hockey fans know the value of a player like him. He needs a coach who will help improve his defensive skills. Or you could just send him north to Causeway St. We will take him.

Like I said above true Caps fans did NOT vote Ovie worse anything. Any Caps fan with any sense at all will tell you Ovechkin IS hockey in D.C.

I can guarantee it was NOT Caps fans that voted Ovechkin worse anything. True Caps fans love Ovechkin. More than likely people who don’t know hockey, just know they haven’t won the “big one”, or root for other teams made this vote.

Yea this article really does show alot of caps fans are morons…
I’ll be at a party and bring up the caps with fans, “you guys see they fired bruce?” “ha damn dude…. Who’s bruce?” “wooooow…”
Its rediulous. the minute we start doing well people actually watch the games!!
When i went to a bears phantoms in philly after the winter classic it blew my mind to see hockey fans in another city. I was real jealous of how knowledge so many of the flyers fans in attendance were.

I guess with Brad Lidge gone the people of DC lacked a consensus #1 choice in this poll. Still, this really shows what Caps fans know about hockey…or at least how loyal they are to their team.

I doubt this was trolling. People just interpreted “worst” as “most disappointing” – a title that certainly fits Ovie’s season. The actual “worst” athlete would be 4th liner who barely plays or a scrub on the Skins special teams – an athlete that most people wouldn’t even know. Of course people are going to use a poll like this to call out a player who fell far below expectations, and to criticize them for it is silly.

It is like any other major sports city, when the athlete does not play to what the fans expect he is the worst athlete. Only when they win awards or championships are they voted the best athlete.

I have lived in the DC area all of my 36 years and I know no one who reads DC Magazine. Should sum things up right there.
