Burke isn’t happy with how the Luongo trade talks are going

Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke was busy getting at least one deal done over the weekend, but his talks with Vancouver in trying to land goalie Roberto Luongo aren’t going quite so well.

James Mirtle of The Globe And Mail reports Burke isn’t too pleased with what the asking price is for the 33-year-old goalie and as a result feels like he can go with what he’s got in net already.

“From my perspective, the prices that are being asked have to be reasonable,” Burke said. “If you can get a goaltender who makes you better, and it costs you 15 first-round picks, would you do it? No.

“So somewhere between 15 first-round picks and something that makes sense, we’re not there yet. I’m not going to overpay to upgrade at that position. I’m not happy with what’s being asked. From my perspective, rather than strip your organization to fill one positional need, we’ll go with what we have.”

Canucks GM Mike Gillis has made it clear he’s not going to just give away Luongo, but he’s in a rough spot because Luongo’s essentially said he wants out. Burke says he’s cool with going with a tandem James Reimer and Ben Scrivens but that won’t do much to soothe Leafs fans in their hope of returning to the playoffs.

Burke will use the Leafs’ wealth of forwards to appease the Canucks eventually, just don’t expect it to happen right away.

I’d love to see an offer sheet from Burke to Schneider, let’s say 5 yrs/30.5m 😀

Burke is a moron. He whined and complained about Penner getting his money,,,,now he has his ring. As a Canadiens fan, I hope Burke is in Toronto for a very long time,,,a very bitter, sad old man!

I was shocked that he is only 55 years old ! If I would have had to guess his age I would have said 71 !

Luongo probably will insist on being able to wear a baseball hat, nixing any deal they make.
You know Burke doesn’t allow them!

Burke’s a good guy…but not so much as a GM. Luongo’s probably annoyed that they drafted an offense-only defenseman in the first round, especially since that defense is so crappy.

gotta love the tired, hardworking, undone-tie show burkes putting on

The Leafs have a wealth of forwards? I guess if you count career AHLers.

If Burke were really confident going forward with Reimer and Scrivens, he wouldn’t be working the phones as hard as he can to land a real no. 1. It’s clearly his last resort to go next season with those two, and he will try to sell them to fans as hard as he can if he doesn’t land a no. 1…..and I bet the Leafs fans will buy it.

There should be a quote for this picture. “YEA I TRADED SCHENN FOR AN AMERICAN STOP HARASSING ME DON CHERRY” !

Always enjoy Burke, brings a little color to the game….plus, you can’t forget that he actually extracted #1 draft picks (albeit low ones) for Versteeg and Kaberle, when most rational people understood they were not elite players…..that said, I think he will out-wait Gillis for Luongo, who must move him to keep the locker room in Vancouver together; and it doesn’t appear that any other team is serious about acquiring him, which also helps.

But I do agree that the Leafs need to make the playoffs next year; and Luongo would likely make that happen…..So Burke doesn’t have all the leverage, either
