AND a big young defenseman who won two Frozen Fours in three years and was +90 in that time.
Love Jordan Staal. But he ain’t THAT good.
We should have swapped 1st rounders in that trade. Instead, Shero just woodshedded Rutherford.

I think we underused Sutter and most underestimate his skill. PIT won’t (and clearly doesn’t).

You could be talking about Staal or Sutter. And that’s my point.
(Staal, certainly, is stronger)
I think, as time goes on, you’ll think we were insane to include Sutter.
And you’ll be right.

I have to admit, I didn’t expect to get as much as we did for him. With that said, you’ve got yourself a hell of a hockey player. Extremely hard worker, smart, strong – a true two way player. You gave up a lot but my guess is that 5 games into next year you’re going to be very pleased

No- we got hammered on this trade. I would have given PIT Skinner before I gave Sutter!
Staal is a great player. But he’s not Sutter + big young defenseman + 8th pick.
I was cheering until Bettman said “Sutter”. Then I eased back into my chair like the Hindenburg eased into New Jersey….

am i the only one that thinks this was a bad idea for carolina? why give up so much for a player they could’ve just signed next off season. do they really need him this year that badly?

Yeah that’s basically what I meant. The risk for Carolina of him not re-upping is far below that of any other team.

Oh, they definitely weren’t the only place willing to trade for him, believe me. They were just willing to pay more than whoever else was interested. Bear in mind, Staal can still elect not to re-up long-term – put simply, nobody else was willing to bet Staal would commit to their club, so while others would only be making offers based on the worth of the one season he’s signed for, Carolina paid more because they’re confident they can get him resigned.

Still feel like they gave up a bit too much considering the Canes probably need MStaal over JStaal, and that Carolina was probably the only place willing to trade for him. That said he’s young and should be great for them.

I wonder who else he thinks Jordan Staal compares favorably to? I’d guess Toews and Bergeron.
