Penguins shake up draft, send Staal to Carolina

With the city of Pittsburgh hosting the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, some thought Pens GM Ray Shero might make a bold move in front of the hometown fans.

He did just that.

The Penguins shook up the evening by trading C Jordan Staal to Carolina in exchange for the eighth overall pick, C Brandon Sutter and D Brian Dumoulin, who Carolina took 51st overall at the 2009 draft.

The marquee name of the deal is obviously Staal, the 23-year-old center who’ll head to the ‘Canes and play alongside his brother, Eric. Staal had 50 points in 63 games last year (including 25 goals) and was outstanding in Pittsburgh’s six-game opening round loss to Philly in the playoffs, scoring nine points (including six goals.)

That said, the ransom Carolina paid to acquire Staal was massive — Sutter was one of the Canes’ brightest young stars and had signed a three-year, $6.2 million extension with the club in July 2011. He hasn’t missed a game over the last two years and averaged 17 goals over the last three.

In addition to Sutter, Pittsburgh also gains the services of Dumoulin — who in April won the Frozen Four with Boston College — and got the eighth overall pick, which the Penguins used to select Portland Winterhawks defenseman Derrick Pouliot.

An emotional Ray Shero thanked Staal for his six years of service to the club prior to selecting Pouliot. That was preceded by a massive reaction from the Consol Energy Center faithful upon learning of the deal.

    Love the drama.

    • drewsylvania - Jun 22, 2012 at 8:28 PM

And the trolls. Let’s not forget the trolls.

Pierre Maguire needs to get off the Penguins sack! He stated “the Eastern conference must be absolutely scared by what Ray Shero was able to accomplish” the funny thing is he said almost the exact same thing when the Penguins signed Michalek and Paul Martin a couple of years ago, I believe it was “Pittsburgh just reloaded, they’ll be winning championships for years to come” way to be impartial Pierre.

If they land Parise he will be correct

      • atwatercrushesokoye - Jun 22, 2012 at 8:31 PM

I would agree but right now they haven’t signed Parise and there’s no guarantee they will, Maguire was commenting on the Penguins after this trade and that’s hyperbole at its finest!

Its unlikely Parise is going anywhere….

How much cap room does Pittsburgh have now?

    • theawesomersfranchise - Jun 22, 2012 at 10:29 PM

      10 million

  4. rabidbillsfan - Jun 22, 2012 at 8:26 PM

Wow, where is the ‘Guine fan who said “Why would Pittsburgh trade a key player for Prospects and Picks? They are contenders now.” Sure, I’m upset that Buffalo didn’t make a play, or a hard enough one if they did, but to come out and say that Staal wasn’t getting moved was absolutley ridiculous. You don’t turn down a 10 year deal on a team with cup aspirations unless you don’t want to play there anymore. I’m sure we will see a PHT post use the pun “Staal-ing” atleast once this season. Looking forward to it.

We overpaid for Eric to have another brother aboard. Sutter was too high a price, unless this was for Nash.
    Pens just killed us…..

    • atwatercrushesokoye - Jun 22, 2012 at 8:34 PM

Jordan Staal is 23 and a center, he put up pretty decent numbers playing as a number 2/3 center, plus he’ll cost less than Nash will when his contract is up…he’s a better pickup than Nash IMO.

Do you know how many more people are going to show up to your barn to see the Staal’s play? He’s established his name, not to mention he’s brothers with your cap. Even non fans will hear about ‘the staal brothers’ or something like that. Staal’s a more than solid player and will do good for your franchise.

As a Canes fan I’ve been hoping for a deal for Jordan Staal for a couple years. Wish Sutter wasn’t involved in the deal but still happy to get a third Staal brother.

  7. herbiecane - Jun 22, 2012 at 8:29 PM

Brandon Sutter a Pengiun. I’m going to be sick.

I think Pierre Maquire is smoking a cigarette off camera

  9. heyzeus143 - Jun 22, 2012 at 8:32 PM

horrible move by the pens, staal > Malkin long term

    • drewsylvania - Jun 22, 2012 at 8:34 PM

Given how often Crosby gets hurt, I’d put Staal ahead of him instead.

      • atwatercrushesokoye - Jun 22, 2012 at 8:54 PM

        Your comment just concussed Cindy.

Still hoping Fly Guyz get Yandle!

  11. bgsusteelers - Jun 22, 2012 at 8:36 PM

Staal scored 25 goals in 62 games. Why are Canes fans upset? He’s also one of the best defensive forwards in hockey. Oh, and they have no chance at Parise unless they dump Martin next. I don’t think they will pursue him anyways. I’m hearing Martin for Setoguchi straight up.

Such a huge Staal fan and am so sad to see him go. I (as all Pens fans should) thank him for his time and his tremendous contributions to our success. Truly a great player with a bright future.

With that said I am equally excited about the Pens being able to get who they did for him. Looking forward to seeing some new faces in the Pens line up soon

    • juanquixote - Jun 22, 2012 at 8:50 PM

Dumoulin looks like he’s going to be a beast, he was likely going to starting out on the third pairing in Carolina this year. Sutter doesn’t have the offensive skills JStaal does, but he should do just fine on the Pittsburgh PK

  13. juanquixote - Jun 22, 2012 at 8:48 PM

There’s been talk of Staal going to Carolina for weeks now, but I honestly never expected it to happen. I honestly think they overpaid, but at least Jim Rutherford is trying to do something instead of sitting idly by and watching the rest of the league get better.

This years draft, in the words of Bob Ross, “Lets get crazy”

  15. heyzeus143 - Jun 22, 2012 at 9:25 PM

a team that lacks toughness continues to rid themselves of tough players and stockpile puckmovers in this ice clogging NHL

  16. dannythebisforbeast - Jun 22, 2012 at 11:05 PM

If u ask me Carolina had the leverage and STILL got the short end of the deal

  17. herbiecane - Jun 23, 2012 at 11:14 AM

Agree with Danny. And, since we now have 3 of the 4 Staals, NYR has tremendous leverage when we try to complete the set.
Pens fans will know they won this trade later, when Brandon Sutter comes into his own.
I would have given Skinner before Sutter.
