Indeed, I’ve always liked Mr Russell!! When I think of “person of color” I think of the likes of Picasso or Chagall. I don’t see why people need 5, 6, 7 syllables when one, black, works just fine thank you. And here’s a name-drop for you: I once had the honor and pleasure of watching an NHL game with the second black NHL player. That would be Mr Mike Marson. Nice chap!

One point of clarification insider7: The player you referred to at the end of your comment was Willie O’Ree, the first black player in the NHL, who made his debut with the Bruins in 1958. But please do not call him African American. He is Canadian! And the American portion of that semantically challenged PC phrase refers to the USA, not North America, so it is simply wrong to use it in reference to anyone who is not an American citizen.
Of course, the flip side of the Bruins being the first NHL team with a black player is of course that the Red Sox were the last MLB team to integrate, when Pumpsie Green debuted in 1959.

This kid got taken in the first round of the NHL draft- not because his brother plays for a rival team, and not because he’s black, but because he’s a damned good goaltender. It’s sad to see that not one comment yet has focused on that- instead it’s trolling and race-baiting back and forth.

Whatever your opinion of P.K., or Montreal, or Boston, this kid deserves better than that. Congratulations to him for being picked up, looking forward to seeing him in a black and yellow jersey soon.

I’m not French, not that it matters. Not from Montreal either, not that it matters. What matters is that a very talented young black hockey player is going to a city with a well known, and well deserved racist reputation. Sorry, that’s just a fact. Don’t get the attack on “racist” Boston sports fans. I doubt Pierce, KG, Wilfork, or Troy Brown feel that way. There are a few morons in every city. If Subban can play, he’ll be fan favorite. If he sucks, he’ll be as hated as his brother, Wideman, and Hal Gill.

Isn’t that rich. Somebody from the world capital of ethno-centric bias and pomposity is shooting accusations of bias. If you are not “French enough”, you are persona non grata in Montreal. As for being the coach of the Canadiens, non-French-speaking coaches need not apply. The entire city of Montreal was in a bigoted uproar when an English-speaking head coach was hired. Get over yourself. But you French folks do have something to offer (you really are French, right? That what you keep telling the world.). If we need somebody to pour the wine or to orchestrate a surrender, we’ll give you a call. You’re certainly experts in these areas.

I will remind the poodle to the north that the first African American to play in the NHL played for the Boston Bruins, several decades ago. Keep hitting the beer bottle, poodle boy.
