Jordan just got married didn’t he? It’s not that he wants outta pittsburg it’s that he’s ready to settle down and wants to be closer to his family my guess anyway do t be overly surprised Marc doesn’t do the same in a few years. Jordan has his ring and isn’t dumb wait for ufa and Carolina will give him roughly same deal as Pittsburg offered maybe more. Believed to be 10 years at 50 million. Reasonable price for a high end second line center which is what he truly is. Don’t over evaluate him and think he’s a number one guy because he’s not on a cup contending team which Carolina will be again when he signs there. Right now what’s the point for Carolina to push for a deal? Wait a year and don’t have to give anything to get also Jordan isn’t requesting a move he seems happy playing with the pens to finish his deal and make a serous run next year.

I agree. It truly is unfortunate but I respect the fact that he wants to gets on a line with some top 6 wingers like he deserves – and the NHL better look out when he does, he could challenge for a few Selkes. I want him to stay but I can’t begrudge him the opportunity to play a bigger role with a team with one of his brothers.

The Pens on the other hand would be smart to figure out exactly what he wants and then try to deal him somewhere so they can at least get pieces.

staal doesnt say no to the franchise… the franchise says no to staal. if they want him he will be back. if not, the franchise will move forward and plug another peice of he franchise puzzle in his place.

Thank The Red Wings and the Rangers, but you simply just can’t afford all 3 and J. Staal wants AND deserves more.

Because buffalo is one of the best hockey cities in the united states. Im from pittsburgh and we didnt care much about the pens til malkin and geno came around

Buffalo had better tv ratings for hockey than detroit and pittsburgh

Hockey means more to them up there. Pittsburgh is a football town. And used to be a baseball town. If the pirates were ever relevant again the pens would be the outcast of pittsburgh sports

If the Pens offered Staal a 10 year deal, they must think Crosby is not a long term option. Nobody offers a true 3rd line center a 10 year deal if they think he is a 1 or 2 guy. And we all know about Crosby’s soft head!

Be surprised if CAR doesn’t at least make an offer including their #8 pick and prospects including perhaps Ryan Murphy. Since no one will want to give up serious assets for a rental pick, my bet is that Staal wants to go to CAR & will.

Staal is my favorite player, and obviously this kinda sucks but I will still wait to see what he has to say after he gets back form his honeymoon and after he sees what kind of money they give Sid. I also think that he needs to talk with Ray about where he can play as I have said before I would like him to be second line center and move Geno to the wing.

For all the trade talk and saying that this team has this many draft picks or this many young prospects think just for a second. The Pens are a cup contending team right now this upcoming season, why would they trade a NHL level talent that can help them win a cup this year for young talent and picks that won’t be in the league for years? If they are going to trade him, they are going to trade him for current NHL players that can help the team right now.

i might be the only pens fan that says it out loud but man i would rather have staal for 10 years than crosby. crosby is one concussion away from sinking pittsburgh if they sign him to some ridiculous 10 yr offer like its been rumored. i would rather have a malkin staal 1 -2 than a questionable crosby. i dont blame staal however, he proved this year he is worth more money than the pens are probably able to afford….it was only a matter of time before this happened.

Well I’ll look at it like this. Jordan Staal is a very good player. Hs talents are better suited on a first or second line. Buffalo is in great need of a legitimate no 1 center and with the abundant wingers and prospects they have available not to mention draft picks in tonight’s draft, they could make a convincing offer to bring him in. Cap space is not too much of an issue yet, and with their current no. 1 guy in Roy (who isn’t ally a number one center), packaging him up in a trade offer could fill their hole at no. 3 without causing too much cap damage.

Tis most likely won’t happen, but given the situation both teams are in it makes sense t package Roy in with prospects and draft picks t assure a solid no. 1 guy to come in and fill a hole the sabers desperately need.

One can’t help but speculate with this information.

No way Pitt trades Staal to Buffalo for just Roy, prospect and first. It probably would take Foligno, McNabb and a first for Pitt to consider. Plus I’d hate to give up Foligno and McNabb for a one year rental player to play for a team that is not going to contend for the cup this year (at least on just that move alone). No way Pittsburgh in their right mind would want Roy.

Well, considering the Pens watched the Stanley cup be awarded at home just like Buffalo did, I don’t really see the joke. He would be our Top-line guy, he is a better defensive forward than any center on our team. BTW, it wouldn’t be Roy, it would be Pommer, I could see a 1st, a prospect and Roy for Staal. Staal could be a potential face of the franchise with Miller. I’m sorry, but there really isn’t much of a diffrence between Pitt. and Buffalo as far as landscape. Buffalo also now has a state of the art locker room and training facility and an owner whose not afraid to throw his wallet around. This is a more realistic destination than many think. If Buffalo is intrested, it could come down to Carolina and Buffalo.

I think that teams should only be able to sign a player at max 5 year contracts and they can only be signed long term until they hit the age of 35 during the course of that season. Then, all players from that point on only can sign one year deals. This ends all of the BS of these over 35 contract penalties ( see Pronger, Etc.) .
There should also be larger penalties for the teams that hand out these long term deals who want to ditch a player to the minors (see Redden, Souray, etc.).

I love staal, and wont fault him for not wanting to be a 3rd line center for the bulk of his career. I hope he stays in the burgh but if he doesnt, i wish him success wherever he goes (hopefully to the west).

Or as someone else said, it may be somewhat of a low ball offer. If he was only offered 30 or 40 million for those ten years of course he is not going to take it. Now if it was for 60 or 70 million then he is definitely on his way out.

I think this is basically it. He wants out unless the Pens show interest in not resigning Crosby (Not going to happen), or some interest in trading Malkin pops up. He wants to be the number one or two guy, and he will by at latest the end of next off season. I wish him the best wherever he goes but I really don’t that team won’t have a flightless bird as their mascot.

I agree with you on limits for players but only after a certain age. At 23 and a ten year contract, hell, he’s be a UFA in his prime. But signing guys to ten year deals when they are 30 + is pretty ridiculous.

I don’t blame him. He has already won a Stanley Cup with the group, was their best playoff performer this past, and likely doesn’t want to be penciled in as a third line center until he is 35 years old.

He has a lot more to give and it’s up to the Penguins to choose which centers they are keeping. Looks like they are trying to get cheeky with the cap. I’d personally like to see a 5-7 year cap on term for contracts in the new CBA.
