There are 3 main aspects to a defenseman. Offensive skillset, shutdown ability, and physical play. If you can do all 3, you’re a first pairing guy. If you only do 2, you’re a 2nd pairing guy. If you do only 1, you got yourself a 3rd pairing guy. Koekkoek does all 3. Who do you even compare him to that is a 3rd pairing defenseman? Are you talking 3rd pairing on the All-Star team?
