Report: Jagr to test free agency

According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, Jaromir Jagr is going to market.

The 40-year-old Czech will reportedly test free agent waters on July 1, a surprising development given earlier reports that Jagr’s agent (Petr Svoboda) was working with the Flyers on a new deal.

“I’ve talked to Jaromir and I have talked to Paul [Holmgren] and we hope to get something done before the draft,” Svoboda said at the time.

That report (courtesy CSN Philadelphia) was on June 6, so it’s hard to figure what transpired over the course of 12 days to cause an about-face from Jagr’s camp.

If we had to guess, it could’ve come down to what role he would’ve played next year — after the Flyers were eliminated from the playoffs, Jagr expressed frustration at his ice time under head coach Peter Laviolette and wouldn’t publicly commit to re-signing in Philadelphia.

Dreger notes that Jagr “plans to change training to shed some [pounds] and get faster,” which you can construe any way you’d like. I’ll construe it as the NHL being a young man’s game and Jagr realizing his role in Philly next season could’ve been minimized by the sure-to-be-expanded-roles of Sean Couturier, Brayden Schenn and Matt Read.

But what you really have to wonder is if Jagr/Svoboda looked at the impending free-agent forward pool and said “hey, why not test this thing out?” Jagr’s 54 points (in just 73 games) last year put him tied for seventh among potential UFAs, behind only Ray Whitney, Zach Parise, PA Parenteau, Teemu Selanne, Olli Jokinen and Alex Semin.

i see holmgren makin a big trade for weber and if that fails he resigns carle and jagr but not until he is sure he cant get a deal done. i personally loved jagr thia year he was fun to watch and he was always smiling imo he wont be as good next year without giroux. i think jagr has done alolt to elevate Gs game and os worth every penny pf his cap hit hell i would even bump him to 4 mill but we have young guns and i want coots in the top 9 if not top 6 we havent even seen his offensive game after and he is already a future selke winner so i could only see jagr in the 3rd line slot

I hope Jags comes back, but if not, good luck man and thank you for everything. I believe it’s not what Jagr just brought to the ice but what he brought as a whole to this team

Ironically, this is the exact same thing that was said everywhere else he wore out his welcome.

His 1 year in Phila was productive, and he was a great role model for a young Flyers team. He was noticeably sluggish come playoff time, though. Perfect 1 year rental player, but he’ll be a better fit elsewhere.

I said in the middle of the year, if he wants to stay and cut his pay then resign him… He would be worth maybe 2.5 mill a year cause he is a great role model for the team but he got fatigue late in the year and was very injury prone.

He obviously wants to go to Winnipeg away from Bryz.

Whoever is down voting this comment obviously doesn’t get the joke.

Aged veteran who has potential despite his age? Perfect formula for the Rags! (now that Parise said no way to them and they most likely won’t give up half of their team for Nash)

i would love to see him back in NY ..could use the offense and vet leadership

Hey I just left you, and this is crazy, but first line minutes…contract maybe. This jagr watch will be more lame and drawn out as that song. That’s saying something.

If he wants another cup, there’s always the team on the other side of the turnpike .
