@ raven, Philly rangers are always making money every year. Philly is the number 1 non original 6 team in the league in attendance top 4 total with the leafs, habs and wings…. I guess Philly would be 3rd over the wings. Rangers are a huge market and always have a decent attendance for this league.
That combined with smart drafting and good signings are why Philly and NY can afford to go after them

I think it would be best for pronger to stick around and be consulted by the team doctors consistently anyways, for his own good, as long as they aren’t pressuring the man to play. Suter doesn’t seem to show interest in the flyers, and although the parise is a great defensive (and offensive) forward, it wouldn’t make sense to gamble with the sharks on him. The asking price will be high, and the flyers can use that money on a few other pieces in front of bryz

If your 1) is saying they can afford to have him retire your wrong. They would carry his 5 million cap hit until 2017 because of his age. Lappys contract was only a million and expires in 2 weeks. A far cry from 5 million for another 5 years.

1) They can (they did this with Lappy and his contract).

2) If there’s an amensty clause in the new CBA, the safest bet would be the Flyers buying out Pronger (the 35+ rule wouldn’t matter).

The Flyers can’t afford to have Pronger retire, if he does they get hammered on the cap, if he stays around to “rehab” I believe they can put him on long term IR and free up his cap space (not sure if that’s correct due to his age) but if that’s the case he’s going to have to spend the rest of his contract trying to “rehab” which I guess is in his best interests because he’ll keep getting paid.

The Rangers will be in on both. Praise and Suter probably will get a front loaded deal for very long terms like Brad Richards did last year. If that is the case and Cap Geek and my math are right the NY Rangers and Detroit are the only teams that have a realistic shot at them both. We will see but if I were a betting man baring something drastic the Rangers and the Wings will get either one. Both teams have expressed interest in both.

Actually, signing Parise does make some sense if they miss out on Suter. After signing Parise, they would have some talented forwards to use as trade chips to get a dman, such as Bogosian.

Suter has already states he wants to stay in Nashville or sign in the Midwest. Last I checked Philadelphia isn’t either.

Going after Suter is a good idea for the Flyers, but going after Parise doesn’t make any sense. The Flyers are already one of the top offensive teams in the NHL, and that was on full display when they managed to out gun the Penguins in the first round. What was also on display in the playoffs is that the Flyers have a terrible defense, which is likely caused by the lack of Pronger. So it makes a lot of sense the Flyers would go after a really solid defensemen. However spending what little cap space they have left to sign Parise would seem to be a mistake. Its not that hes not a good player that would help the Flyers offense… its that they should spend that money trying to sure up their awful defense.

If they trade a big player for cap space to sign either of these guys I’m putting my $ on the team that player gets traded too to win the Stanley cup. Hopefully its the wild because with 75/1 odds that would be a ton of cash.
