Discuss: Kings win the Cup! Kings win the Cup!

Kings win Cup AP

The Los Angeles Kings have won the Stanley Cup for the first time in franchise history. A 6-1 victory over New Jersey Monday at the Staples Center clinched the finals in six games.

Jonathan Quick was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy, the second year in a row an American goalie has been named playoff MVP (Tim Thomas, 2011).

Monday’s game will be remembered for the major penalty that Devils forward Steve Bernier was assessed at 10:10 of the first period after hitting L.A. defenseman Rob Scuderi from behind into the end boards. Dustin Brown, Jeff Carter and Trevor Lewis scored for the Kings on the resultant power play, and the game was all but over.

For Los Angeles, it’s been a dream playoff run after qualifying as the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference. The Kings lost just four times in 20 postseason games and became the first team since the 2007 Anaheim Ducks to clinch the Cup on home ice.

Since entering the NHL in 1967, the Kings have suffered through numerous trying seasons. Up until this year, they’d managed to make the Cup finals just once, losing to Montreal in 1993.

The 2011-12 season wasn’t without its trying moments either. Head coach Terry Murray was fired in December after the team got off to a slow start and struggled badly offensively. John Stevens took over on an interim basis before Darryl Sutter was hired by embattled Kings general manager Dean Lombardi.

Lombardi also swung a major deal prior to the trade deadline, acquiring Carter from Columbus for Jack Johnson and a first-round draft pick.

The Devils did well to get back into the series after falling behind 3-0. However, with no margin for error, Bernier’s penalty proved to be the back-breaker.

Simon Gagne paid a price to play hockey for a long time, and tonight he gets his reward

    • jaybyrd99 - Jun 12, 2012 at 9:19 AM

agreed. i never liked the flyers, but always thought gagne was a class act. i thought his career was done after the concussions so it was especially sweet seeing him skate with cup.

      • jaybyrd99 - Jun 12, 2012 at 9:21 AM

*skate with the stanley cup *

    • nhlsucks - Jun 12, 2012 at 11:59 AM

Well it was the New Jersey Devils vs the Los Angeles Kings, Referees and linesman for the 2012 Stanley Cup.
I am not a Devils fan, but surely love the NHL over all sports. But now I have a spine in my side. The NHL clearly gives lower fan base teams less respect. If you are not an original team, you are already seem to be an disadvantage before the game starts.

But lets come back to reality. All any NHL fan wants is a fair game, a minor mistake is ok, but as fair as possible. There were two Cinderella stories in action. A come back from 0-3, and 8th seed who never won a cup(who happened to have a player by the name Wayne Gretsky on it). What I saw in game 6 was a travesty to the NHL, and a travesty to the Referee’s Dan O’Rourke and Chris Rooney ,and one of the linesman Jean Morin, Derek Amell who set a pick for a King behind the net. As far as I understand hockey, besides face-offs, linesman belong blue line to blue line when the puck is in play. As for NHK Referee Dan O’Rourke not calling a boarding on Steven Gionta is yet another travesty in this game. So play goes on, and one of the new jersey devils glides two body lengths into a defenseless player. Now the call at minimum is hitting from behind. The top of his nose is bleeding because if anyone knows that type of helmet its close to you knows and can easily scrape the top of your nose and we all know the face bleeds allot. He is so clueless he calls a 5 minute major (which allows unlimited goal scoring) and kicks the new jersey devil out of the game leaving the new jersey one short on the bench. Payola from Gretsky or NHL, which was it NHL Referee Chris Rooney? Imagine if i was a devil fan,I don’t know how Pete Debeur was so calm during the post game but said he will have more to say soon. I should hope so.

In my opinion the first person to lift that cup could have been either payola referee Dan O’Rourke, or Chris Rooney.

      • hrudey - Jun 12, 2012 at 12:28 PM

Child, please – the Devils at one point in game 3 had been awarded 12 power plays in the series to the Kings’ 3. The hit by Stoll to Gionta could have been called but Stoll pulled back and it wasn’t into the glass. Bernier, however, saw Scuderi’s back from just inside the blueline and at no point was the front of Scuderi’s jersey visible to him. He hit him from behind with the entire offensive zone to pull up, and instead finished his upper body into the boards. Absolutely automatic call there. The Devils could have responded to adversity, like the Kings did in killing six consecutive PPs in game 3, but they got beat for three goals and the game, series and season were over.

The linesman getting bowled over was unfortunate, but not getting the puck out and not getting a man on Carter was on the Devils.

In the end, the Kings finished the series 6 for 20 on the PP, while the Devils were 1 for 19 (and that 1 was a gift). They got outscored 16 to 8 overall. Bad calls happen, they went both ways, and I trust that the Devils organization and players will continue to show the class that some of their fans didn’t and just recognize that they just got whipped by a team that was simply better from top to bottom this postseason.

    Comeback? Comeback? What comeback?

All we’ve been hearing for the last three days is that the Kings are on the run and that the Devils are poised to make a comeback. Hell, people were even making the now laughable suggestion that Brodeur might even win the Conn Smythe. Its amazing how five minutes can change everything isn’t it?

Anyway, congratz to the Kings. They were by far the better team in this series, and no doubt the best team overall. They deserved this win, and Quick obviously deserved the CS.

  3. dannythebisforbeast - Jun 11, 2012 at 10:59 PM

Dustin brown looks like the captain from jaws son. Congrats flyers west!

    • eigglesnosuperbowls - Jun 12, 2012 at 6:43 AM

Most boring cup celebration I ever seen ! Does the network tell you each player only has so much time to skate with it ? I would raised that thing right up against the glass !

  4. faukner - Jun 11, 2012 at 11:06 PM

Anyone remember when that blomfeld troll called the kings winning it several months ago when they looked like they would miss the playoffs?

    • blomfeld - Jun 11, 2012 at 11:45 PM

God bless you friend and praise be … we did it tonight and we did it in style ! :)

sharky: Pretty snarky, considering the Devils earned their penalties. There’s a moron on here. His name is sjsharksfan.

Hope you feel bitter all summer long, sharks fan. You have been on here repeatedly, hoping against hope that the Kings would lose.

16-4, baby. Cry all you want Sharks fan. Cry, cry, cry.

    • hrudey - Jun 12, 2012 at 12:31 PM

I bet you’re excited for Ryane Clowe’s day with the Cup. Well, okay, he won’t get to hold it or touch it, but he might get a stick on it from the sidelines.

Now do like all Sharks do when it gets late in the postseason, and be gone.

  7. lostpuppysyndrome - Jun 11, 2012 at 11:12 PM

Great job Kings. You guys were long overdue. Enjoy it, Kings fans. Cheers.

  8. bdfools - Jun 11, 2012 at 11:12 PM

Congrats to the Kings. They got hot at the right time, had a very impressive run, and absolutely deserved the Cup.

As far as the “controversy” goes, I hate the NBC announcers, but Milbury made a good point (for a change) during the first intermission. There’s no glass where Gionta got hit. So his face didn’t smack into any glass. Oh no, his waist hit the top of the boards a little hard. You just don’t see as many calls get called against the boards with no glass. How many times do we see a player get totally checked into the bench and nothing is called?

I’m sorry, but the Devils complaining about that call is nothing but sour grapes. I had a feeling they weren’t coming back from that because DeBoer was too focused on it. When the coach can’t get over a call and is screaming at the ref, how is his team supposed to put it aside and focus on what’s important – actually getting back into the game.

Devils were dominated tonight in every way possible. They took some dumb penalties which just magnified that fact.

  9. kingfooj - Jun 11, 2012 at 11:12 PM

    TEARS OF JOY

  10. sjsharks66 - Jun 11, 2012 at 11:14 PM

Nothing wrong with the kings but those refs really did a number on the devils play.

    • scionofflame - Jun 12, 2012 at 9:46 AM

They earned a lot of those penalties man. Nothing the refs can do but call what they see. Penalties get missed that hurt all sides and all teams during all parts of the season. What matters is how the team that gets called overcomes the penalty.

  11. itwasafumble - Jun 11, 2012 at 11:17 PM

Woot, Kings got their Cup! Suck it, haters!

    • cardsandbluesforever - Jun 12, 2012 at 12:26 AM

When your franchise ends a 45 year drought that dates back to the very inception of the club, you’re damn right we’ll enjoy it. How was it that one time the Blues wo…

…oh, right. Well, there’s always next year!

  12. hockeyfan1701 - Jun 11, 2012 at 11:25 PM

Hey Philly, good thing you got rid of Carter and Richards to get that cup….

    • kingfooj - Jun 12, 2012 at 12:50 AM

sorry, cant help it, gotta post this

  13. gbditka - Jun 11, 2012 at 11:26 PM

10 vs 6 wins every night…Kings are a great team…a shame the Zebras decided the outcome tonight over the players! Congrate LA…but remember we have 3 Cups to your 1 in alot less years!

    • manchestermiracle - Jun 11, 2012 at 11:41 PM

Too bad your players have no class. And after whining about the officiating, like your coach DaBore, neither do you….

    • hrudey - Jun 12, 2012 at 12:14 AM

You would have thought that teams would have learned from Phoenix – if you’re busy whining about the call you didn’t get, the Kings will burn you.

    • dannymac17 - Jun 12, 2012 at 12:19 AM

      what a clown.

  14. dannythebisforbeast - Jun 11, 2012 at 11:33 PM

Love it kings win cup somebody has to bring up Philly. Last time carter and Richards were traded because they were paid and expected to be elite players they are great contributors and depth guys. Richards should have never got the C. TOo much pressure too early. Also unloaded gagne too you forgot him. Congratulation too all the ex Flyers Richards,Gagne,Carter,Williams,Hextall
    And even Stevens.

  15. blomfeld - Jun 11, 2012 at 11:41 PM

    WE WIN !
    ————–

All the Kings’ horses and all the Kings’ men, ensured that the haters would never yap again …

We did it friends ! Yes, our Los Angeles Kings are the “best” hockey team in the world today ! Therefore words are no longer required either here at PHT, or at any other electronic forum … for the simple fact of the matter is that “we” won tonight tonight ! … and we won in style ! Let it be known that I love everyone here at PHT ! … though none more than my fellow “long-suffering” King’s fans, who have longed for this day just like me ! :)

GO KINGS GO !!!!!!!! … TODAY, TOMORROW and FOREVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • db105 - Jun 12, 2012 at 11:02 AM

As a Kings fan and a Kings season ticket holder I’m enjoying every moment of this. But let’s not mistaken the Cup winning team as the “best” team. The Kings were no doubt the hottest team but calling a team that was below .500 and barely making the playoffs the “best” team?

  16. manchestermiracle - Jun 11, 2012 at 11:46 PM

More whining about the officiating. ‘Cause, you know, the big conspiracy was to make sure the Kings won. Guess you better include three Devils forwards who got ejected because they must have been paid off. And after getting a PP when Brown was whistled for tripping, the Devils end up with three players in the penalty box. All those fouls were just made up, right? Did you crybabies even watch the game? Or were you emulating your coach, DaBore, by focusing on your mistakes and completely missing the plays on the ice? You give up three goals on a 5-minute major, you should be looking in the mirror for who to blame….

  17. ravenscaps48 - Jun 11, 2012 at 11:54 PM

Congratulations to a Classy Organization that was long overdue for this night!… I must say that I did pick them to win the Western Conference this year and losing to my bums, the Capitals…. But I was halfway right! 45 Years…. Savor the moment, Kings Fans. A run that will go down in HISTORY!……. Now?….. Hockey Withdrawls Begin…….. Sigh

  18. blomfeld - Jun 11, 2012 at 11:58 PM

    BY THE WAY …

did you guys also know that “right now” is the 50th anniversary of the Seattle World’s Fair ? … man, is this ever strange but nice, eh ? .. anyway, you guys should “fall in” and share the joy with us LA Kings fans, for these are “good times” to be had by all …

  19. patsfiend - Jun 12, 2012 at 12:18 AM

Congratulations Kings fans! New England hands the Cup over to you! Take care of it (not!)

Don’t pay any attention to the haters, whiners, and trolls. The hockey playoffs are too long, too hard, too well earned to be swung by one penalty or a couple badly officiated games (unless it happens in OT of G7!)

Kings played great throughout, and earned it. Savor it. Hopefully, this will help bring hockey popularity back to SoCal.

  20. letsgosjsharks - Jun 12, 2012 at 12:33 AM

Holmgren should win GM of the year for the moves he made to perfect the Kings roster. Mind you, Howson technically helped.

  25. highlander24 - Jun 12, 2012 at 1:32 AM

WE WON THE STANLEY CUP! No one can EVER take that away from us! We truly are the KINGS and we finally get our crown! 45 years of suffering is over! No disappointment this year! And I can finally say this: CANUCKS SUCK, BLUES SUCK, COYOTES SUCK, DEVILS SUCK! YOU ALL SUCK AND WE WON THE CUP!!!!! WE did it! GO KINGS GO, ALWAYS AND FOREVER!

    • hrudey - Jun 12, 2012 at 9:37 AM

No, they don’t suck. They weren’t good enough this year, but the thing about hockey players is that for almost all of them, they’re hard-working guys who give their all and are worthy of our respect even though and perhaps because we so want to hate them when they’re playing against our team. Besides, this is about the Kings, not about who they beat – focusing too much on slagging the teams that came up short detracts from enjoying the team that didn’t.

It was so damn loud in there last night, my ears are still ringing. Primal screams from long suffering fans. Could not be happier for the Kings. Seeing Ray Bourque lift the Cup was unbelievable, for him, after such an amazing career, but seeing the Kings lift the Cup was 1,000x better, for them and for all of their awesome fans. Well done.

Paul Holmgren suicide watch? Wonder if Ritchie sent him a text last night with a picture of him enjoying some beer in a Cup…

  35. tackledummy1505 - Jun 12, 2012 at 11:24 AM

Suck it Devils. At least that’s the last we’ll hear from the Devils. Brodeur should retire, they’re too poor to resign Parise, and all you haters need to lock it up. You want to blame it on the refs all of sudden, while they allow the trap to be legal lol? You all are a joke, good luck in getting more than 5,000 people to your games next year lol.

    • martysbetter - Jun 12, 2012 at 1:40 PM

Hey, how have the Flyers been doing on the links?

I imagine Laviolette preaches the importance of using SPF350 sunscreen in that locker room with all those ginger-headed pricks running about.

  36. supr49er - Jun 12, 2012 at 11:30 AM

    Congrats Kings. Great playoff run.
Don’t the fans know to boo Bettman though??

  37. tackledummy1505 - Jun 12, 2012 at 11:35 AM

I don’t understand all this Richards and Carter stuff though. The Kings won the cup and made the playoffs because of Quick. Period. Still like the trades and still believe we can dominate year in and year out in the next 2 years if not next season. We in Philly are extremely happy for Richards, Carter, Gagne, and especially Hextall. You all apparently don’t know how we treat our teams or players. Even if they leave. This is why other fans don’t get us. We treat our teams like family. It sounds funny but that’s the best way to describe it

    • martysbetter - Jun 12, 2012 at 1:47 PM

Only in Philly do you throw batteries at family members.

    • laleafs - Jun 12, 2012 at 6:30 PM

Thats pretty funny, I’m sure Donovan felt like family when he came back and you all boo’d the heck out of him. Some appreciation. And who trades two of their best three players after signing them to big / long-term deals? LOL

  38. tackledummy1505 - Jun 12, 2012 at 11:41 AM

By the way, Sportscenter, which originates from California right? Well anyway Sportscenter had a whole 1 min and 23 second segment on the Stanley Cup. That’s even with them showing 3 different angled replays of the check from behind. Just goes to show you that there wasn’t much interest in this Stanley Cup Final and what boring hockey does for the sport.

    • supr49er - Jun 12, 2012 at 12:07 PM

ESPN carries the NBA and goes overboard with them. NBC has to fiercely promote the NHL.
