Just to clarify…

Teams are allowed to make trades after the trade deadline, once their season ends. That is why we saw Washington and Boston trade Chris Bourque for Zach Hamill. We will see more trades percolate closer to and most likely during the draft. Like last year, we saw San Jose trade Devin Setoguchi, Charlie Cloyle, and their 1st round pick to Minnesota for Brent Burns. Rick Nash anyone?

Teams are allowed to sign their own restricted and unrestricted free agents right now. Come July 1, unrestricted free agents are allowed to sign with other teams. July 1 is the beginning of the new league year. Teams can try to sign players who are arbitation eligible, can sign before then or after their arbitation hearing, team and sign whatever that out come is, or they will be a unrestricted free agent.

Teams are allowed to trade their “exclusive negotating rights”, which is right now until July 1. I have a feeling Nashville will trade Ryan Suter and New Jersey will trade Zach Parise to a team that feels they have a good chance to sign them and will have a crack at them before anyone else does. However, your naive if you don’t think their agents have already had talks with other teams.

The Devils and Kings could make trades if they wanted. Trades can happen at any time. However, since it is after the trade deadline (which really isn’t a trade deadline but the latest a team can acquire a player who can play for them that season) any player they acquire couldn’t play for them until next season, so they have little incentive to make a trade.

You can’t actually sign anyone until July 1st, once all teams have stopped playing, so while deals for players’ rights can be made, no actual contracts can be inked by anyone right now.

for some reason this is the first year i’ve noticed trades happen before the season/playoffs have completed. why are these teams allowed to do this? the devils or kings aren’t allowed to make any moves i’m assuming, so why can everyone else do it?
