My post of course factors in the new possible new CBA….without a good guaranteed TV revenue, which the NHL teams don’t have, the new CBA could eliminate to some degree guaranteed contracts…especially if they increase the cap.

I’m not a lawyer and I haven’t seen details of the contract, but I wouldn’t assume that the 90 mil is all guaranteed. I’ve never heard of such a thing in a long term sports contract.

9 mil a year for a player like crosby doesn’t cripple the pens with the cap at 70 mil. In 6 years when the cap is over 100 million and crosby takes up less than 10% of the cap, it will be highway robbery. Leave it to Flyers/Caps fans to advise about dumb contracts. Bryzgalov and Ovechkin are all not as good as crosby, are older, and…wait for it…havent won a cup…the cup thing is hard for you people to comprehend I think.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with paying Crosby $9 million per year, where I think they’re making the mistake is at 10 years, especially since the report this story is based on (from CBC’s satellite hot stove segment) indicated that it’s unlikely they’ll be able to get insurance for the contract. Just think about that for a minute, would you give a 10 year $90 million dollar contract to a guy who’s missed this many games over the last two years when the second he signs it you’re on the hook for every penny?

Nobody has mentioned the fact that when Sid was out the Pens played just fine especially Geno he stepped up and carried the load quite well, well enough to get the MVP. Sid is a great player but when Geno is on he is as good or even better than Sid. It’s a tough call and I would hate to see the Pens without Geno or Stall. If the Pens sign this deal that could be a reality. Sid needs only one hit and he and Pronger could share a room at the rehab center. Keep the money and expand the core with good players with that money.

9 mil a year isn’t bad for Crosby. At the very least he sells tickets and jerseys and attracts national (US ans Canada) attention, which translates into nationally televised games. All of the above equals $$ for the team. Sports teams are simply businesses trying to earn a profit.

As a Flyers fan I look forward to hating him and the Penguins well into my 40′s, he spices up the rivalry.

Wow some of you guys are just absolute trolls, signing Crosby to a deal that only costs 9 mil a year is a steal. As mentioned before, it gives the Pens plenty of room to sign Malkin to an extension. That combo will keep fans in the seats for years. Plus, Crosby came back this year and was on pace to score 132 points if he had played the entire season. Which, by the way, makes him the highest point scoring player in the league by 20+ points. So, a $300k pay raise (he currently makes $8.7 mil) to a guy of that caliber is nothing, especially if he stays healthy. If he gets hurt and retires, then the contract comes off the books. And besides, how do you trolls know that your top player won’t get a career ending concussion this season? If Crosby stays healthy, and wins just one more Cup, you’ll all wish your team had pulled off a steal like this one. Go Shero. Go Pens

Look. I know I am not a Pittsburgh Fan. And I know about the rivalry and we don’t like each other. But from a business stand point, there is absolutely no way that they should pay him that kind of money when he has such a negative injury history. I respect the hell out of Crosby’s talent and his talent should be paid that kind of money, but this guy gets grazed by a high hit, and he’ll miss 10-25 games. You can’t 9 Million Dollars pay for that. No Way

I agree with that 100%, and theres even more to it.

If Crosby gets a career ending concussion in the next couple seasons, this deal could cost the Pens $90 million or so to pay the guy to watch games from his couch. There is no way that doesn’t suck for the team, but its not the end of the world since they could place him on long term IR and get his cap hit off the books if nothing else.

What would actually be worse is if Crosby suffers another non career ending concussion that degrades his play (think Lindros). Its possible in that situation the Pens could end up paying the guy a ton more then hes worth, and have to deal with the cap hit on top of it. Hell, no ones even sure what Crosby will show up next year. He might have had quite a few assists last year, but his shooting % was awful and he clearly struggled to score goals like he has in the past. Is that a sign of things to come? I don’t know, but I’m not sure I would gamble $90 million on it.

if he would retire it would come off the books and he wouldn’t collect because he’s under 35. Even if he still would collect he makes the penguins more than 9 mill a year just by being sidney crosby. He averaged over 1 point per game after coming back. Plus malkin said he won’t ask for more $ then crosby, so that’s 2 superstars for 18 million or less. That will make it so Pittsburgh has at least 15 years of consecutive sellouts. That’s $!
