Well just because they want to talk with Semin, doesn't mean he will actually end up in Russia next year. With that said, it certainly would not be a shock if he does split for the KHL.

First of all, Semin would almost certainly be the best player in the KHL... which means he would command a huge contract to play there. Thats something he will not get in the NHL. His heart and desire have been questioned for years, and after yet another under achieving post season one has to assume NHL teams will be careful with their checkbook when it comes to Semin. I would say he will see offers in the range of $3-5 million in the NHL, and they will almost certainly be one year deals.

In the KHL on the other hand, he might see deals two or even three times that big. Not only would he be a top player in the KHL, and a huge fan draw, but his contract would also not count against the cap of the team that signed him being a player returning from the NHL. So a KHL team could add perhaps the best player in the league to their roster without adding to their cap.... I think a rich team will make him a HUGE offer that he won't see in the NHL.
