Everyone acts like the Predators are already losing them. Sort of disheartening and downright pointless to think so.

I think we -can- sign Weber and Suter to long-term deals, especially considering the history they have with the team and the strides they’ve been making. If they want to play for a Cup winner, they can support Nashville on the way next year.

This is just part of the business of hockey. If you can’t lock up a star for a long-term contract, then you have to move him for players, prospects and/or picks so that you don’t watch him walk away for nothing.

It’s not any different than basketball, and everyone remembers what happened to the Magic. Shaq wouldn’t re-sign, the Magic wouldn’t trade him, and when his contract was up, Shaq left to go play for the Lakers. Good for Shaq, good for the Lakers, disastrous for the Magic who got nothing.

If Weber won’t sign an extension, then Nashville has to accept that he could walk away for nothing, so the Preds have to trade him. And if they have to trade him, then you might as well trade him this off-season, when a team is likely willing to pay more to have a full season of Weber, with the chance to hopefully have him re-sign with his new team.

This guy seems to be doing a lot of abstract leaps in his assesment.

I dont see any concrete reasoning why Nashville couldn’t get Weber to sign if Suter leaves. They have a good team there that underachieved in the playoffs… or rather, they were out-gooned by the Coyotes. Why wouldn’t he want to stay as the star?

You simply can’t sign two dmen to massive deals, they are just of ultimately limited value. The fact is, no team its going to sign both of them long term to”max” deals so why would Weber or Suter be upset just because the Preds cant?

Now 2 “reasonable” deals? Maybe the preds can do that. But no team is going to give then both 8x8m.
