Al Michaels and Jeremy Roenick and some of the other on air NBC people may be good announcers, but they are poor on announcer closeup microphone technique. They’re supposed to know how to hold mics like broadcasters, not like rap singers. It would be more professional to show some space between the top of the mic and the mouth. Rule of thumb for on air talent: “If you’re a guy, mic should be below the knot of the tie.” Mike Milbury is usually right on this, but he sometimes wavers when he gets excited.. The floor director and/or director should be in charge of that, and they shouldn’t be afraid to tell the talent to back off from the microphone. At their broadcast level, for a Stanley Cup, we expect better.
