The not touching the cup thing was tough for me. I had the chance to have my picture taken with it and I refused to touch it. The guys from the NHL that were there insisted I touch it. In the end I did. I will never hoist it in victory. Those dreams died with youth. But to feel the names of your heroes on the round metal was amazing. Like being in the “I love this sport more than anything” club. It didn’t feel like a betrayal. It was actually quite moving. Then a friend who knows Chelios real well sent me video of all these little kids touching it and I realized, it is your chance. If you wear skates, don’t touch it. If you love this game to the point where you know two national anthems by heart… Then go ahead. It’s a connection with the stars to the fans that put them into the heavens.

If you have ever played ice hockey, you would know (even as a child) that the aura that surrounded the Greatest Trophy on Earth, commanded deep respect, and represented the highest honor any player could achieve. This “superstition” tag is mindless chatter. Hockey’s foundation is Respect. Respect the game and those who laced up before you. That’s why they immortalize your name on the cup. As a product of the USA hockey system, I am proud of Zach and his classy leadership.
Also, as many times as I have seen the Cup in person, I have never touched it. Grampa always said, “When it ain’t yours, you can look-but can’t touch.”

Uh… because Crosby touched the trophy the year they won, and didn’t the year they lost. “Because it’s directly relevant” seems like the simplest answer, but I can try to dumb it down further if you’re still confused.

If the captain and team are making a statement that “it isn’t the trophy we want, we only want the big silver one, so this is nothing to celebrate” I can see it making some sense. As a superstition, it is, well, like all superstitions, silly. As statesman Sir Francis Bacon said centuries ago, “The root of all superstition is that men observe when a thing hits, but not when it misses.”

Touching the trophy worked out well for the pens in ’09…and NOT touching it didnt work out so well in ’08 for the pens…
