Minny is a possible destination for both players. If they land Suter and Parise, Latendresse will be a cap casualty…. Then after 2013, MN loses Backstroms / Bouchards / Heatley’s contracts…. they have plenty of money to spend… I could see Heater ending his career in MN if he takes a massive pay cut. He is a great locker room guy but gets a bad rap (for obvious reasons per his past)

It’s great that Dany Heatley’s $7.5 million dollar cap hit is coming off the books BUT that’s two seasons from now.

But since you brought it up in 2013-14 the Wild have 9 players under contract counting for $28.7 million (add in Parise, Suter and Backstrom at a minimum $16 million) and you now have 12 players at $44 million.

In 2014-15 the Wild have 2 contracts at $9.6 million, add in those 3 very unlikely contracts and you’re at 5 contracts for around $26 million.

The cap is expected to be LOWERED going forward, the likelihood of the Wild (or any team) signing both is very unlikely.

They will give Charlie Coyle and Jonas Brodin every opportunity to make this team as rookies and would make less than 1 million a piece. They most likely will resign Josh Harding or a backup goalie for less than 1 million. Tyler Cuma, Brett Bulmer, and Jason Zucker who all played a handful of games for the Wild all in their rookie deals most likely will make the team. That right there is 22 players with close to 21 million available.

Your fatal flaw about trying up half their cap space with 6 players is that Backstrom and his 6 million dollar contract and Pierre-Marc Bouchard’s over paid 4 million and Matt Cullen’ 3.5 million cap hits all come off the books next summer. If you want to go further than that, the follow summer Dany Heatley’s 10 million cap hit comes off.

I’m failing to see your logic on how the Wild cant afford both.

Yes the Wild have the cap room now, but they only have $17 million in room with 16 players under contract, say you get each for an average of $5 million per year (very unlikely) you now have 5 spots to fill on your roster with only $7 million to do it, not to mention several players have contracts up after next year, including Backstrom.

Again in a world where the Wild sign both for a cap hit of $5 million per year, in 2013-14 they have $28.25 million tied up in 5 players (Heatly, Koivu, Suter, Parise and Gilbert) add in another $6 million (assuming he doesn’t get a raise) for Backstrom and you got what will probably be well over half your cap gone in 6 players.

Sorry Wild fans the economics just aren’t there to sign both.
